The cost of cheese!

The cost of cheese just keeps going up. In aldi the grated cheese I got used to be £1.50. Then it went upto £1.75 and now its £1.99. In asda they did a 2 for £3 offer on cheese, earlier in the year it went to 2 for £3.50 and now its 2 for £4. How much will it be by Christmas.

It is extortionate and as a large part of my diet is cheese (I know, I know), I'm feeling the pinch 😆

Not for the OP, but in case anyone else is interested, I recently dug the grating attachment for the food processor out of the back of the drawer to grate our own. It was a cheap food processor (Lidl I think) but it does the job very well.

Just don't forget to take the chopping blade out first. Ahem.

I hadn't noticed particularly as I don't know how much I usually pay for cheese, but one thing is got sure: grated cheese is almost twice the cost of ordinary cheese that can grate yourself.

I usually just buy the grated mozzarella as it's nice on bolognese etc and it's messy to grate yourself. The price of all cheese seems to have gone up alot, it seems to be increasing in price more than other things.
I also buy sliced cheese like gouda as my son likes to snack on it alot.

I love ready grated cheese, it seems to be the perfect size and shape. Cheese I grate at home is never quite as chunky.

I only buy the pre-grated mozarella (as our family investigations have shown that produces the nicest cheese on pizzas in our pizza oven) but I did used to love grated cheddar. When the DC were tiny it was those ready chopped type items that made the difference between having time to cook properly or relying on freezer type junk.

I have just bought Aldi cheese today, one bag grated and two blocks of mature cheddar. It has shot up in price.
I like pre grated, I can use a tiny bit as needed. When I grate fresh I end up with too much and don't like fresh grated bagged and put in the fridge as it tends to clump.
So ll kinds have their uses.

We have noticed this, We are a veggie house and cheese is our eldest's favourite protein source, I am trying to get her to try more pulses and tofu but she's not keen!

I buy both. Grated for things like pasta and fajitas. I grate my own for things like cheese on toast and cheese omelettes as it melts better.

I buy grated vegan cheese. Shoot me now 😂

I used to love the processed cheese you could buy in a block at the deli counter in supermarkets. It was wrapped in a silver paper foil and tasted quite like dairylea slices. 'Twas delish.

You can still get that, @longtompot. Sold as burger or sandwich cheese in individual plastic slices. Or is that more orange than you're thinking of?

Remember in the olden days before germs and allergies had been invented? You could get samples of cheeses on sticks at the counter in the supermarket!

I buy grated cheese because I actually don't like cheese that much but it's handy to put on top or add to sauces or the occasional baked potato, extra pizza topping etc.

Whe I used to buy block cheese, it would sit in the fridge growing a green coat and I'd have to cut that off and then grate it.

I don't have that problem with ready grated and although it has gone up in price it suits me to buy it like that and I can afford to.

It's just been rocketing in price in recent weeks - so much has. God help us if the wart in Ukraine lasts much longer, things will get even more expensive.

Oh I know you can buy cheese slices for burgers, but this stuff was pale from what I can remember and a different texture to these cheeses. Dairylea slices is the closest you can get to it now. It was also the peeling off the wrapping that was part of the fun

Try vegan cheese, we have dairy allergies so we regularly need to remortgage the house for a bit on our pasta.

Exactly grated cheese has always been more expensive in the bags grated.

Aldi do a block which is flavoursome around £1.99 or £2.50 I can't quite remember but it's a decent size block of cheese.

Grated cheese tastes awful and goes off quickly. Better to buy the value Creamfields cheddar and grate it.

Oh lordy the OP knows the grated cheese is more expensive but that doesn't change the fact that its price has increased, as illustrated in her opening post.

No it doesn't.

That's not almost twice is it.
And we've established some people find it easier not to have to grate it themselves.
I also find it stops DH cutting slabs off to eat.

Funnily enough Cheese is one of the items we have ( in our household) agreed to forgo this Christmas , along with Christmas crackers .

£6 per kilo vs £10 per kilo is pretty close to ‘almost twice’. What maths are you using? 😂
