HoppingKangaroo · 20/07/2022 12:19

The cost of cheese just keeps going up. In aldi the grated cheese I got used to be £1.50. Then it went upto £1.75 and now its £1.99. In asda they did a 2 for £3 offer on cheese, earlier in the year it went to 2 for £3.50 and now its 2 for £4. How much will it be by Christmas.

And by the way I get it about the arm aching but I grate cheese sitting down, there's no rule to say you've got to stand up to grate cheese!

Good for you. Let people manage their cheese grating however they wish. No need to get so judgy over it.

Fuck sake! Typical MNet at the moment. Someone mentions grated cheese and the thread becomes a battle ground as to why would anyone want to buy it!

Fuck sake, it's their money they can buy what the hell they want! They can stand up and grate, the can sit down they can even have a bath in it if they want!!!

The point of the thread is how much cheese has gone up in price! Jeezus!

😂😂😂

Ilovesriracha · 20/07/2022 12:44

I don't give edam about grated cheese.
Their money their choice.

Vikinga · 20/07/2022 12:45

Good. Dairy and all animal products has a massive negative effect on climate change (never mind the animals). Let's make it all very expensive as a true reflection of the cost to our planet.

SweetPetrichor · 20/07/2022 12:38

It’s a luxury item. You’re paying for convenience and ultimately, you can live without grated cheese if you can’t afford it.

If you read the OP it's not just about pregrated cheese. Plus they haven't said OMG how outrageous. Everyone knows having the cheese pre-grated is a "luxury" but for some people it's a really really useful luxury. Like frozen omelette, people sneer at them and it's a value added product but my nan loved them as couldn't make an omelette with her arthritis.

It's milk that's pushing cheese prices.

The dairy industry profit margin has been cut 70% over recent months. It’s Due to generally rising costs. They need to claw that back but have been holding off and are introducing the increases steadily.

its going to get a lot more expensive.

on the grated cheese front - if you can’t afford it, buy normal blocks and freeze. When they defrost you can crumble them up.

Ontomatopea · 20/07/2022 12:51

I guess it's good if the cows are happier? Are they happier?

Squiblet · 20/07/2022 12:51

But weirdly, milk doesn't seem THAT much more costly. Not as much as cheese, anyway. Someone mentioned luxury - well a posh deli near me is selling individual cheeses (not big ones) for a tenner each! Thanks but no thanks.

maddy68 · 20/07/2022 12:58

Dont buy grated cheese. It's much more expensive by weight and is also coated in crap to prevent it sticking together

Georgeskitchen · 20/07/2022 12:58

Ontomatopea · 20/07/2022 12:27

So you don't have to grate it?

Have you ever tried ready grated cheese? It's disgusting and full of additives . My hubby used to buy it until I told him. He grates his own now 😆

Oh stop judging me for my grated cheese consumption

PeloAddict · 20/07/2022 13:02

@Georgeskitchen what.. like potato starch? That's all that's in it, stops it sticking into one big clump

Potato starch isn’t really loads of additives is it now

Floydthebarber · 20/07/2022 13:05

I used to buy a basic italian mozzarella, either Galbani or one of the supermarket ones at the £1.20is price but moved to the cheaper ones at 70p. In the last two weeks they have gone up to 90p. I don't want to buy the really cheap one as its just not that good! I'm not getting annoyed that the price of an imported buffalo mozzarella, these are pretty basic items.

Cheezus indeed!

The only thing added to most of the grated ones is potato starch. That’s it.

I love pre grated cheese. Anything that makes life easier, why not?

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 20/07/2022 13:15

For the love of all that is holy let the peeps who like buying grated cheese enjoy their grated cheese.

malificent7 · 20/07/2022 13:15

I bloody love cheese but should prob eat less of it...after Christmas i'm like a walking round of brie...not good for me!

Maytodecember · 20/07/2022 13:18

I’ve just got home from Lidl. All the cheese had gone up in price, but there was hardly any there. I got the last small block of own brand cheddar, no large blocks at all. More gaps on the cheese shelves than available.

Because we‘re meant to be avoiding ultra processed foods?
