The cost of cheese!

HoppingKangaroo · 20/07/2022 12:19

The cost of cheese just keeps going up. In aldi the grated cheese I got used to be £1.50. Then it went upto £1.75 and now its £1.99. In asda they did a 2 for £3 offer on cheese, earlier in the year it went to 2 for £3.50 and now its 2 for £4. How much will it be by Christmas.

I can highly recommend the new halloumi burgers from Waitrose.

Because we‘re meant to be avoiding ultra processed foods?

How is it really any more processed than grating at home?
Literally the only extra step is a sprinkling of corn starch?

It might be full of more shit in the US where they rebel against food standards but not in the UK.

It's not ultra processed though is it. Its grated (which I guess is a process) and coated in potato starch.

Is that just round hallomui slices?

Do you add potato starch when you grate it at home? Because I don’t.
“Ultra-processed foods usually contain ingredients that you wouldn’t add when cooking homemade food.”

Carrotzen · 20/07/2022 13:57

@TuftyMarmoset it's not up to you to police what others eat

Grated cheese is not ultra processed food anyway.

I’m not policing - people can eat whatever they want, although it’s better when they know what they’re eating. I was answering the question “why not”. I’ve never seen potato starch for sale in a supermarket and it’s added to cheese as an anti-caking agent rather than as an actual ingredient so I would consider that ultra processed (whereas cheese grated without anything added would not be).

UHP food contain things a person would never buy or have at home. Potato starch is not one of those things.

ChinBristles · 20/07/2022 14:06

@TuftyMarmoset I think the definition of UPFs is more about ingredients you would just NEVER have in your kitchen. Like unpronounceable chemicals. I don't add potato starch to grated cheese if I'm making it myself because I'm going to eat it immediately so I don't need to dry it out a bit to stop it going mouldy. But there's nothing inherently unnatural or unhealthy about potato starch.

So I would say cheese is processed but not ultra-processed. (So not a UPF)

Why buy grated cheese?

To irritate you

MiseryWIthAStent · 20/07/2022 14:08

How dairy?!
All that extra cheddar just for some cheese...

I'll see myself out.

That is a disgrace.

Maybe if Liz becomes PM she'll sort it. She's quite passionate about cheese.

It’s a luxury item. You’re paying for convenience and ultimately, you can live without grated cheese if you can’t afford it.

Yes, op. Know your place. You don't deserve food you enjoy.

Don't forget she's a fan of opening up pork markets as well.

jetadore · 20/07/2022 14:17

Personally I like to buy grated cheese then squish it back into a block and slice it.

Hi @Ontomatopea ,

Yes, nice big round patties of halloumi- seasoned well. Great with avocado and tomato! Had that for breakfast!

Potato starch is for sale in most supermarkets, its essentially just flour made from potatoes. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean it's an uncommon ingredient

And you weren't being helpful, you were being judgemental

Blackbirdsinthgarden · 20/07/2022 14:44

Yum. Cheese!!!!! Making me hungry now.

SmellyToilet · 20/07/2022 14:54

Where are you OP?? Come back and explain yourself!! 😂😂

Bollindger · 20/07/2022 14:58

We find grated cheese actually goes further than us grating it fresh.
Because we grab a handful, so don't over estimate how much we need.
