Who hasn't sent their children to school or will be collecting early?

It must be uncomfortably hot this afternoon cooped up in a class of 30.

Have you sent yours or will you be collecting early?

Ours aren't doing anything productive anyway so will keep them off today and tomorrow to keep them cool rather than unnecessarily hot and bothered.

Mine wanted to go to school

WFHquestion · 18/07/2022 13:39

Mine did too.

I couldn't justify it though.

I think the schools are open primarily for safeguarding reasons and we do not have that need so wanted to ease the burden on a sticky day.

Ours shut at 11:30 today, I didn’t send my son in as is a 30 minute walk in each direction.

Harridance · 18/07/2022 13:43

Oh I didn't know they were open for safeguarding reasons, oh well, they're there now

I kept mine home. She's recovering from strep throat and really didn't want to go in. She's only just 5 so very small.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 18/07/2022 13:48

My children’s school is shut today and tomorrow. The kids have home learning to do (we haven’t done any) this is primary school in London.

MassiveSalad22 · 18/07/2022 13:50

Just glad they’re not actually closed - hopefully first full school year without a closure!! DS is going in to year 3 and never had a full school year. Fingers crossed we last these next 3 days!!

I think do whatever you want at this point. DS is in school but their plan was very good and reassuring. Some other schools may not be.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2022 13:51

Mine's off. Took advantage of the allowing children who find heat more difficult to ring in sick.

Marymary987 · 18/07/2022 13:52

Mine are in school. It’s no cooler at home and they wanted to be with their friends.

BlackeyedSusan · 18/07/2022 13:53

They wouldn't learn anyway. And the heat might mean they were off for a bit longer if they went in today.

ElfDragon · 18/07/2022 13:55

2 of mine have broken up already. Third one (eldest) is at school. The school has aircon in all teaching spaces, so she’s probably having a better time of it than the rest of us today!

EcoCustard · 18/07/2022 13:56

Mine stayed home, school email at 11.30 to collect early today and tomorrow is closed as temperatures in the classroom reached 40c this morning. They are in the full sun and no shade though and it’s tiny.

theyhavenothingbuttheaudacity · 18/07/2022 14:00

Still have to work like most of the country and the school is fully open so business as usual

Don't worry, that's simply not true - schools are open for the same reasons they always are, we're not in lockdown.
My ds has gone in as normal - he'd be just as hot at home, I have to work so he'd have to sit on his own for most of the day while I'm in another room on the computer which would make him miserable. He's far happier with his friends, and I trust the school to keep them as cool as possible. I think they're watching a film this afternoon!

🤣 perfect reply.

Mine are in school. They will have a lovely day as always with their friends and teachers. They’re home soon after 3, leaving plenty of time for the paddling pool etc after that.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 18/07/2022 14:06

Mine are in. Dd1's last 2.5 days of primary & she wants to be there with her friends doing the leavers activities.
Dd2 on a school trip to somewhere cooler than here & air-conditioned.
Will decide on tomorrow based on dd1's feedback on how hot it was today. School have said can leave early tomorrow at 1:30pm but only with home learning activity.

lurker69 · 18/07/2022 14:17

no, mine are at home in underwear 2 fans going in the living room lots of cold drinks and ice pops and are still meh and just laying round. they would have been awfully uncomfortable at school, would not have drunk anything and came home feeling ill.

switswoo81 · 18/07/2022 14:20

Home learning activities on the 18th July in a 40 degree heatwave.! Sorry I'm in Ireland so I know we have finished up 3 weeks ago but seriously there is no new learning the last week and looking for online work is presenteeism at it's finest.

Ugzbugz · 18/07/2022 14:21

My sons school has aircon but they shut at lunch and my flat with no garden is currently 32.

KyaClark · 18/07/2022 14:23

Mine went in. If he really struggled today then I'm not sending him tomorrow. He's only 6 so can't reliably apply sun cream properly or remember to drink enough water so I have been really worried.

neverbeenskiing · 18/07/2022 14:27

My 8 year old is in with an extra water bottle that I froze overnight, a hat and lots of suncream, school have said fine to be in their own clothes. We have had assurances from school that there are plans in place to keep the DC and staff safe and to send them in as normal, she wanted to go, so that's what we've done. If she comes home today and says it was miserable then I won't force her to go tomorrow.

Ellyfinsmum · 18/07/2022 14:29

I sent my 5 year old in this morning, not sure if it was the right decision. I got a call at 11.30 to say he wasn’t feeling well and needed collecting. Apparently the classroom was boiling hot and the fan didn’t reach him and he was feeling sick. He was bright red and exhausted when I collected him but he’s perked up now he’s cooled down at home. Won’t be sending him in tomorrow.
