Who hasn't sent their children to school or will be collecting early?

It must be uncomfortably hot this afternoon cooped up in a class of 30.

Have you sent yours or will you be collecting early?

Ours aren't doing anything productive anyway so will keep them off today and tomorrow to keep them cool rather than unnecessarily hot and bothered.

I don’t know anyone who hasn’t sent their DC’s to school along with breakfast and after school club. Working parents so no choice.

PleaseYourselfandEatTheCrusts · 19/07/2022 08:42

We had an email saying we could pick them up at 1.30pm. Definitely reads as if the school want you to pick your child up at 1.30pm, discouraging picking them up at the normal time.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/07/2022 08:49

Just done the drop off- v quiet so an extra win for those sending theirs in

Outlyingtrout · 19/07/2022 09:07

Mine are at home again today. We kept them off yesterday too. Their school is a Victorian building so there are no fans let alone aircon. Neither of them have critical learning going on this week. From speaking to friends who have kids in their classes, I know they've been watching films and having lots of free play. Which is lovely and perfectly fine for the last week but not worth spending a day in high temperatures in a stifling room with 25+ other warm bodies. DD is also going through a maddening phase where she won't drink unless I stand there and make her. So even in normal temperatures she is coming home cranky and headachey. I'm confident that my decision is in their best interests.

There are the "kids should always be in school" brigade who will read comments like mine as a list of feeble excuses but they are free to make their own decisions for their children and I don't give any thought to their opinion on my choices.

You know your kids OP. You know how they cope with heat, what their environment is like at school, whether they are doing important learning this week, whether they are old enough/can be trusted to drink enough and re-apply sunscreen etc. All you can do is make the decision that you believe is in their best interests and ignore random people on the internet who think they know better.

My Y6 and her friend were eye-rolling this morning about some of their other friends who are not going in. They thought it was ridiculous!

Greyskiesaregonnaclearup · 19/07/2022 09:49

Mine have gone in as normal. Even if I thought taking them out was a good idea, and I don't, I have to work.

Taking kids out of school is a luxury for SAHPs or those who are allowed to work from home with kids around.

Angelinflipflops · 19/07/2022 09:57

Mine have gone in, I'm sure they'll be fine

bluegardenflowers · 19/07/2022 10:10

DS2 had a lovely day at school yesterday. In the 'forest' area aka a few trees, sun cream, lots of water, had a super time. Going in today for ditto. PS we are in the superheated zone.

TheFormidableMrsC · 19/07/2022 11:17

I collected my son early yesterday as he had prom in the evening and thought it would give him time to cool off and relax a bit. Against his wishes I've sent him in today. The classroom has aircon, it'll be much more comfortable there doing fun activities than the fire pit that is my home currently. The school is half empty though so many people have kept their kids off.

Ganymedemoon · 19/07/2022 11:18

For all the eye rolling from posters about people keeping their kids at home. Just in case it had not occurred to you, all kids are different, some can tolerate the heat better some reallycan't. Some have health problems with are massively exacerbated in the heat, asthma, eczema etc Funnily enough just like us adults. All schools are different, different options have been given, the buildings are different etc and yes everyone's home situation is different to accommodate this! It really is fine to send your kids in and fine to keep them at home. It's a choice. We all make different choices all the time! So what 🙄

CoffeeWithCheese · 19/07/2022 11:28

Mine are off - I gave them the choice but since DD1 opened the back door at 8am to let the dog out and refused to go further as it was already too bloody hot out there, I don't think they'd have coped. DD1 is very like me and I have never coped well with the heat, even as a child in the 1980s booted outdoors in all weathers to get a suntan/burnt to a crisp.

I've just been out for 5 mins under shade to put some washing out - and I'm feeling pretty damned awful now.

AlwaysLatte · 19/07/2022 11:34

They're in but one is at a water park with the school and the other we have the option to of staying home and he chose to go in! But I'm not happy about them going on a bus in this heat so we took them both in this morning and will collect them later, the air conditioned car with very cold drink for them yesterday went down really well!

AlwaysLatte · 19/07/2022 11:34

*gave not have!

EssentiallySo · 19/07/2022 11:36

Didn’t send my primary or secondary age dc. Did send little one to nursery though as they have a totally shaded outdoor area , it’s 2 min walk from home and they have fans and water play and sugar free ice lollies so it’s actually cooler there for her !!!!

OhmygodDont · 19/07/2022 14:57

Quite funny 10 ish schools shut or closed early today in our city. Not sure what made those 10 so special. It wasn’t even say all in area X hugely spread out, not sen schools not all new builds not all primary or secondary there was no real reason behind it being those schools. Mine where all in again today all day.

even rained here briefly around 6am which was nice but was still 28 by 9am.

Silverswirl · 19/07/2022 15:07

Oh for gods sake. Bloody ridiculous. It got this hot in 2018 where I live (SE) and no one so much as mentioned closing schools or not sending children in.
Covid has happened, the media scare mongering has ramped up making us all believe it’s like being at the end of the film ‘total recall’ if we so much as step outside.
To the poster who said ‘so what’
Well the kids who’s parents arnt able to collect them because you know, they have to work, have to stay inside and watch as their mates all bugger off home.

What's ridiculous?

Ganymedemoon · 19/07/2022 15:55

@Silverswirl it was not this hot in 2018. The temps were lower but more prolonged. I'm in the SE too. Here the temp has reached 40.2.

Not really sure what's so ridiculous?

theruffles · 19/07/2022 16:34

My DC has been in both days but she only does 3 hours in the morning atm so it's been fine.

It’s really not that far off. It was 38.9 where I was in Kent and it went on and on. 1.3 degrees difference for 1 day.
No schools in my area even mentioned closing and I didn’t hear of anyone not sending their kids in.
Just complete scaremongering.
Teaching kids that you know what, when the going gets tough- quit. Actually it’s ok to bunk off school and it’s really not that important.

SherbertLemonDrop · 19/07/2022 17:33

I sent mine yesterday and he said there was loads of people not there. I believe this as we live near the school and usually there's loads of kids walking past our house and I swear to god I see 5. I counted. He said 2 teachers made comments about it being too hot and they should have let them work from home but it's a safeguarding thing. His learning mentor said she wouldn't have come in as a child as it's too hot. So I took the hint and he stayed off today. He said it was hot in class yesterday with no air con or fans.

SilverGlassHare · 19/07/2022 17:37

It was 47° in DS’s classroom at lunchtime yesterday. They allowed parents to collect their children at lunchtime both days, so we did. Yesterday I took DS and 3 friends to the cinema while their parents worked, today DS went to a friend’s for the afternoon while I worked. I’m not normally one for taking him out of school but 47° isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s dangerous. I feel for his teacher.

BoilingHotWoman · 19/07/2022 18:03

I haven’t sent DS (Yr7) yesterday or today. I’ve been ill the last week with a horrendous respiratory virus which apparently is not Covid as LFTs all negative, and he picked it up at the weekend. Can’t think of anything worse than sitting in a boiling hot classroom in a new build wooden heavily insulated, floor to ceiling windows, school with a streaming nose and cough!

RannisLord · 19/07/2022 18:12

Mine all went in but I was called to collect DS as he was over hot and vomiting.

Ganymedemoon · 19/07/2022 18:52

@Silverswirl the hottest day in 2018 was 35.3 and was in august, so no schools.

I doubt all the people keeping their kids off teach their kids to quit when the going gets tough! That's a ridiculous thing to say. There you go sweetie go and sit with all your classmates in a hot south facing classroom recording temperatures in the mid 40's. It's the last week of term so learning is pretty much over but don't quit and go in and draw and read! I can think of many better ways to teach perseverance than that!
