Who hasn't sent their children to school or will be collecting early?

It must be uncomfortably hot this afternoon cooped up in a class of 30.

Have you sent yours or will you be collecting early?

Ours aren't doing anything productive anyway so will keep them off today and tomorrow to keep them cool rather than unnecessarily hot and bothered.

It doesn't hurt kids for them to be uncomfortable for a day or two. Kids with no underlying health conditions should not be kept off school for hot weather.

daffodilandtulip · 18/07/2022 21:33

DS had sports day today. They adapted it a bit but he still played cricket and had a tug of war. Not sure that was worth spending over two hours of his day on a bus tbh, so he can stay home tomorrow if he wants.

What a silly post. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be very serious for children, and put extra strain on the health service.
Dehydration, vomiting, seizures - it's not just being 'a bit uncomfortable'.

All these posts on taking kids out of school baffle me.

Don’t you trust the teachers judgment to look after your kids?

No

YABU

Believe me teachers and teaching assistants will not think she's being unreasonable. Parent dont realise just how hot the class gets if you can keep your kids at home

They wouldn't learn anyway. And the heat might mean they were off for a bit longer if they went in today.

Why and why?

Home learning activities on the 18th July in a 40 degree heatwave.! Sorry I'm in Ireland so I know we have finished up 3 weeks ago but seriously there is no new learning the last week and looking for online work is presenteeism at it's finest.

Well that depends on their age.

DC who are doing exams next year are very much still learning in the last week

BettyOBarley · 18/07/2022 22:25

My two went in and were absolutely fine, they came out looking happy and cool.
Will be sending them tomorrow - DS infant school have said they are open all day but we can collect at 1 if we want as it's due to be 39 here. However DDs junior school have not said anything, so will collect him at usual time. I didn't see any kids come out looking overheated /distressed today from either school, the teachers did a fab job keeping them all cool.

Do you all have hugely flexible employers that let you stay at home with well kids even though schools are officially open? I had 3 meetings, a webinar and a group collaboration today between 9-3. If the schools are officially open there’s no way I’d be allowed to just stay away from the office so kids could lounge about the house in their pj’s. DH being a teacher doesn’t stand a chance of staying home with well kids either.

Some are SAHP, some have flexible work, some work part time. I work shifts as does my DH so one of us is always around. Plenty of people work in other jobs other than rigid 9-5 Monday to Friday jobs!

Still have to work like most of the country and the school is fully open so business as usual

This! It's astonishing so many people would think otherwise!

Glitterblue · 19/07/2022 03:46

Mine went, they're in own clothes all week though apart from prize giving on Thursday.

I had booked yesterday off work anyway for something else, my husband is on adoption leave so he’ll have my son today.

That's even hotter this morning than it was yesterday. One of mine has already had a nose bleed this morning.

Today was always due to be hotter

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 19/07/2022 07:54

DS's SEN school is open as normal and DS went in yesterday and will again today. Usual hours. No early finish.

He's been fine with it.

LittleBearPad · 19/07/2022 08:00

Of course they’ll go in. And no idea why you think schools are open for safeguarding reasons OP

Cornishqween · 19/07/2022 08:09

Hertfordshire here. Our school are saying they still expect kids to come in but I believe many were off yesterday and will be today (including my children).

The building is old and run down with broken windows so not one of the newer schools with air conditioning etc I went yesterday for a meeting and staff looked unwell tbh. My autistic children wouldn't cope in that level of heat. We've been home in the paddling pool and in the darkest rooms in the house and will stay that way until it cools down on Thursday.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 19/07/2022 08:12

School has broken up here but I've decided against holiday club today, it's an outdoor pursuits one and they did a great job yesterday of keeping them in the woods and playing in the river but the journey there and back, half an hour each way in traffic was painfully hot and it's going to be hotter today so DD will spend the day inside or in the paddling pool under the gazebo.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/07/2022 08:12

Open as usual so sent my reception child in. She’d be bored at home which in turn would make everyone more hot and stressed- better on school for her and paddling pool once home!

Most hot countries with this weather aren't st school now!! One of children is off, sensory issues and refusing to wear anything, has been sleeping and has felt a bit off. They didn't sound impressed but pick up at 3 is hell.

My DS went to school. He had a lovely day. They had lunch outside in the shade and he said it wasn't too hot in the classrooms

You must be in Scotland

You don't know why a school may decide an important reason for them to remain open is due to safeguarding?

You can't think of one reason?

How about they may be safer in school as they'd be allowed to play out and burn in this heat otherwise. They get some respite at school from abuse. They will be fed at lunchtime.

Jeez some people can't see beyond their own nose.
