Who hasn't sent their children to school or will be collecting early?

It must be uncomfortably hot this afternoon cooped up in a class of 30.

Have you sent yours or will you be collecting early?

Ours aren't doing anything productive anyway so will keep them off today and tomorrow to keep them cool rather than unnecessarily hot and bothered.

Mine is non plussed. I think the parents are projecting their own anxieties half the time.

missdemeanors · 18/07/2022 14:31

@Ugzbugz
My sons school has aircon but they shut at lunch and my flat with no garden is currently 32.

What school is that? And what was there reasoning if they have full air con?

FriedTomatoe · 18/07/2022 14:36

Mine are in. We've had a lot of time off this year as we all had Covid at different points. My kids are starting to act like school is a negotiation and it's not.

MassiveSalad22 · 18/07/2022 14:39

Just dropped my 4 year old to school as well for
a meet the teacher session before September 😁 ice lollies in a thermos for the way home and then straight into the pool 🙌🏻

Plumbear2 · 18/07/2022 14:40

Mines in high school and yes hes gone in. There's lots to do in the last week, rehearsing for end of year productions is just one of them. He wouldn't have thanked me for keeping him off.

Sparklybutold · 18/07/2022 14:40

My son is home. Year 7.

ellieboolou · 18/07/2022 14:40

My 6 & 9yo are home today, school have permitted absences for today & tomorrow, both relaxing in their underwear eating ice cream and playing with their dolls

Gooseysgirl · 18/07/2022 14:50

Our school (primary in N.London) closed at 1pm, with option of not going in. One third of the pupils went in, including mine and they were absolutely fine. There shouldn't be a problem if school are taking the recommended precautions. It's a judgment call for headteachers depending on what kind of building they are in, whether they have AC or not, location of school, journeys for staff etc. I think ours made the right decision - the sun hits the classrooms in the afternoon so the classrooms would have been like saunas.

RamblingEclectic · 18/07/2022 14:57

My DDs' secondary school ended at 1:30 so kids could get home before the time of day it's meant to be hottest, with the knowledge some kids take over an hour to make the trip though kept the school open til normal end time for families who need it.

Tomorrow they're offering remote learning as ending early won't help with the weather forecast here. It's likely my girls will take that up due to the issues with the journey time had today.

I don't think schools are mainly open for safeguarding reasons, but because they're balancing the DfE guidance with the needs of pupils, staff, and families. Safeguarding can be part of it, but it's not the main thing. There are other schools near me that are reported to have closed because their buildings just can't be adapted right now to be safe for the numbers they have.

I generally follow the school's lead with this, so I wouldn't keep them home or withdraw early unless they were offering as it seems many schools have done, but then, I have a Y10 child who after the last few years is really twitchy about missing school time, so it's less my needing to justify them going in and more I'm not going to argue against school with someone who gets there herself anyway.

Blackmoggy · 18/07/2022 15:07

Kept mine home. Their school remains open and their classroom is always very warm so would be like a proverbial greenhouse today, I have aircon too. They will be home tomorrow too. Their health and comfort comes first.

Lachimolala · 18/07/2022 15:09

We got the call to go and collect early today, I’m not bothering sending them in tomorrow. They came out of school utterly miserable and looking unwell. I’ve already told the school I’ll be keeping them at home tomorrow instead.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/07/2022 15:14

I kept autistic ds home, who has a 40min motorway drive each way to his special school and won't go in anything other than long sweatpants and long sleeve hoodie.
Sent my other 3 to their local primary school. They're fine.

Aww that's terrible, hope they get lots of ice lollies bless them. Stuff school, it's too bloody hot.

strawberry2017 · 18/07/2022 15:17

I didn't send my 4 year old In. The heat has been making her throw up and I didn't trust that they would keep her cool.

IfCanCanICan · 18/07/2022 15:19

I felt the same as you OP. School gave us the option, and as I work for myself from home I could easily keep DS off. Gives the teacher one less child to think about and DS is happier at home anyway.

EsmeeMerlin · 18/07/2022 15:20

Ds1 is at home, he has been a miserable sod for over a week because of the weather and hasn't slept a full night. His classroom is stuffy and I knew he would be utterly miserable. He played with his brother this morning and then this afternoon has done some school work while his brother is at nursery.

Hotdrysunny · 18/07/2022 15:20

I took a fan from home and bought another one for my classroom and it was still absolutely awful. I am really hoping school might consider closing tomorrow. Lots of unhappy staff and children.

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 18/07/2022 15:21

I kept mine off.

The provisions the school made - they don't have to wear their blazer or clip on tie.

PE lessons still taking place.

30 min walk EW for dd. If it wasn't the last couple of days of term, I might have felt differently, but as its just messing about lessons, it seems rather daft sending her in just for the sake of it.

RockandRollsuicide · 18/07/2022 15:21

I wasn't going too but I relented as dd was v keen and dh able to collect her.
She's absolutely fine.
Said classroom was ok but as soon as she stepped outside, tough.

Not sure about tomorrow though, will play it by ear!

Tdcp · 18/07/2022 15:23

My 7 year old has gone to work with her dad today as her classroom windows are south facing and they have no air con in a tiny room and 34 kids... he's on a nice cool job on the moors thankfully. It's really really hot and stuff in my big office and there's only 3 of us in here.

Newrunner29 · 18/07/2022 15:24

Kept both mine at home one at special finished early today and tomorrow but has transport and in bus about hour and no air con so thought best at home , 37 now and about 32 in house

LimpBiskit · 18/07/2022 15:24

I've been in several schools today and all were cool and no-one was overheating. The outside temp ranged from 30-35 during the times I was there. My kids are in as I trust the schools to safely manage the space.

PE still taking place....how ridiculous! I wish they treated children like human beings....would the adults like to run around in this heat? It's so dangerous to make lil'uns exercise in extreme heat....a good way to get heatstroke...!

Absolutely no idea? It's a new secondary school hence the aircon, parents were getting annoyed their child would have to walk or cycle home in the heat.

Holidaydreamingagain · 18/07/2022 15:27

MIne are in school because it's a school day and a work day.
