Christmas presents in July

LionKween · 15/07/2022 16:05

I know itโ€™s July ๐Ÿ˜‚, just wondering if anyone else has already bought Christmas presents? I found some really nice jumpers and other clothing in the sale (60% off), so I bought them and will keep for Christmas, mainly to spread the cost out a bit. My friend thinks Iโ€™m being very unreasonable, but is it that bad..? ๐ŸŽ„Just hoping Iโ€™ll remember by then where I hid them..

Used to buy all presents on Xmas eve haha. Since having DS though I got my act together. I buy decorations in January, reusable advent calendar for a penny was my best purchase. DS's birthday is June, as soon as that's done I start buying for Christmas. I start wrapping as soon as I buy them, paper bought in January and keep a list of what I've bought so I don't lose track. My record - all gifts bought and wrapped by Halloween. I also keep all gifts stored in the same place and in individual bags for family. I spend all of December with my feet up, drinking tea and watching Xmas movies. Best lifestyle change ever ๐Ÿคฃ

I love your description of your December! This is always my intention too but somehow I always end up buying more & over buying ๐Ÿ˜…
I'm going to try to stay strong this year & not do this!

teaorcoffee6 · 16/07/2022 18:55

I don't do this anymore i used to but I'd forget where I left the stuff but worse forget what I'd bought and then over buy spending more than needed.
I'm so last minute with everything else and it probably works in my favour when it comes to Christmas as everyone get a gift no more and no less than required.

popcorndiva · 16/07/2022 19:02

Got my DS's new bike in the sale last week which he wants for Christmas. Hiding it at my parents

Snugglemonkey · 16/07/2022 19:08

I am pregnant, due December and recently found out I am expecting a girl. I have bought her 2 Christmas jumpers, 2 onesies and a wee dress for the festive season as I spotted them on sale. The jumpers were ยฃ5 each from Jojo Maman Bebe and I thought them too good a bargain to pass up.

lastminutedotcom22 · 16/07/2022 19:11

I've had some great bits in the sale

Next - kids socks, costume jewellery, candles, diffusers, smellies, mugs, photo frames etc

Smiggle - kids stockings and other children's gifts

Bodyshop - smellies for teachers gifts etc

Paperchase - they had some Christmas bits for about 50p an item!!!

I buy bits all year round as it spreads the cost a bit

Do it! Stay strong. No shame in buying sooner if you're prone to giving massively. I admit I leave chocolate until December. I've tried buying them earlier but I eat them. Every. Single. Time.

Misstes · 16/07/2022 21:15

I went to Tesco today and they had a load of toys in the sale. So made my start now.

So disappointing my tesco had nothing! Will keep an eye out in case anything goes on sale though later.
Good you got some stuff!

I've already pretty much finished for one child, barring anything they specifically ask for later on :)

Riverlee · 16/07/2022 21:42

Yes, Iโ€™ll look and put the odd branded tshirt away for ds etc.

DappledThings · 16/07/2022 21:54

No chance. I cannot give Christmas any headspace till December. Thinking about it throughout the year would irritate me beyond measure.

Youseethethingis1 · 16/07/2022 21:57

I've got my Christmas savings account on the go all year round so if I see a nice juicy bargain in July you'd better believe I'm not waiting pointlessly until December for it to double in price or go out of stock or some other crisis to bugger up deliveries or whatever.
I've got an app that I make ideas lists for everyone on as they occur to me, along with budgets, and it's easy to mark when I've bought something so I can keep track of what's what (and make a note of where I've hidden it!).
I too aim to spend December in a tranquil haze of marshmallows and hallmark Christmas films while the "but it's only...!!!" crowd get themselves all stressed out ๐Ÿคถ

LionKween · 17/07/2022 10:33

@Youseethethingis1 what app is that?

Just reserved a dolls house on Argos that is great value for only โ‚ฌ23.

heattreat · 17/07/2022 14:52

YANBU!

Good for you!

I've got a couple of things : banana socks for DS, fidget toy half price, something for a friend. But not a lot. Haven't had our August holiday yet! I usually start keeping my eyes peeled in September.

Please send me a link for banana socks!!

That's great I also got the wooden one for that a few weeks ago, it looks great!
Did you get the wooden one or the one that flips round to become a kitchen? We have that one already & its great.

LaTangerina · 17/07/2022 14:56

Tescos online (my local one) has the barbie babies for โ‚ฌ3 down from โ‚ฌ12.

DockOTheBay · 17/07/2022 15:01

I know DH has already bought my "big" present as I spotted it on sale and sent him a link ๐Ÿ˜†

I got the kids new dressing gowns in the John Lewis sale (ยฃ5) and some sticker books and things that I've picked up over the course of the year.

stealthninjamum · 17/07/2022 15:04

Op I shop all year round and get bargains when I see them. I canโ€™t do it so much with main presents but if I see bargains like pyjamas, stocking fillers, bits of stationery I do it. Iโ€™ve got a plastic box in my wardrobe currently which has a hoodie for dd2, some initials key rings for me and dds, pyjamas, socks, I think thereโ€™s a jigsaw that was half price for exmil.

in the Christmas topic youโ€™ll find bargain threads too. Over the years Iโ€™ve bought lots of bargains thanks to other Mumsnetters.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 17/07/2022 15:15

I have bought DS3 a Carhartt T shirt half price in sale so far, and will continue looking for things like that they will always like
I'm on disability benefits and it's the best way to spread the costs

Robostripes · 17/07/2022 15:35

I couldnโ€™t possibly begin to think about buying Christmas presents yet! Iโ€™m so impressed with how organised you all are!

However I am excited that this year for the first time ever I opened a new savings account in January specifically for Christmas - we set up a standing order to put ยฃ100 a month straight in there on payday so itโ€™s already up to ยฃ600! I feel so proud of myself that when December rolls round this year the money for Christmas will be right there and I wonโ€™t end up putting the whole shebang on a credit card.

I wish I could do this I'd end up dipping into it though ๐Ÿ™ˆ hence that's why I have been buying sale bits & pieces as I see them.

Robostripes · 17/07/2022 16:05

@LaTangerina Iโ€™m normally terrible too, I just dip into our usual savings account all the time, so I deliberately opened an account with a different bank and set up the standing order so I can just forget about it!

Itโ€™s still a great idea to buy the stocking filler type bits and bobs throughout the year though and inspired by this thread Iโ€™m going to start keeping an eye out! PJs, socks, little bits of Lego etc are all things DS gets in his stocking every year so the more I buy of that throughout the year the more there will be in the savings account for the bigger presents.
