*SPOILER ALERT* To think that Stranger Things is inappropriate for children / teens

My child wants to watch Stranger Things because all the other kids at school have watched it. From what I can see it features violence, sex, inappropriate language and very scary imagery. Surely parents shouldn’t be letting their young children and teens watch this!

We have recently started watching this. It is certainly not for children. Age 13+ maybe depending on their maturity.

Jott · 25/06/2022 20:42

Depends on the child really. I make my decisions on stuff like this by watching the show myself and deciding whether it's suitable for my child or not.

Jott · 25/06/2022 20:42

By child I mean an older child of 12+.

GinGella · 25/06/2022 20:42

My daughter watched from year 9 so 14ish she loves it, the earlier seasons are less dark.

Onthedowns · 25/06/2022 20:42

My 10 years old would be scared witless especially the most recent season - freddy kruger vibes. It's really not for young children. But then some kids on my DDs classes have been watching squid games too 🤦‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

GlitterNails · 25/06/2022 20:42

I don't remember sex scenes, but there are some very scary images. The latest season in particular has had some gruesome deaths. It's not aimed at children.

DashboardConfessional · 25/06/2022 20:43

It's a 12A for me in the first season and then a 15 after that.

tootiredtospeak · 25/06/2022 20:43

Erm I have let my 10yr old watch season 1 to 3 after I watched first so I knew which bits to forward past. Bob's death for example. I wont let him watch season 4 though for a few years it's more horror than the early one which are much more of a goonies feel I thought.

Useranon1 · 25/06/2022 20:45

There's no sex in it (as far as I remember). Would be fine for teens. Is a bit scary but not in a horror film way as it feels more make believe than that

leawakeford · 25/06/2022 20:45

He’s 14 and we don’t let any of the kids have free control over the TV or Netflix etc normally so making an exception for this seems a bit out of line with how we parent

I wouldn't say Stranger Things was appropriate for younger children, but 13+ teens? Really not a problem. The target audience of Season 4 will be viewers who were 13-ish when Season 1 came out, that age and upwards, so a good deal older.

The odd F bomb isn't a problem for children in any case, unless you're one of the clutch your pearls brigade. I don't recall any sex in Stranger Things at all.

magicstar1 · 25/06/2022 20:46

I’ve just binge watched the whole lot. The first couple of seasons aren’t too bad, but the last one was more horror.
After episode 1 I woke DH by screaming in my sleep with a terrible nightmare. It definitely has Nightmare on Elm St. vibes.

pointythings · 25/06/2022 20:46

Also at 14 he will find a way to watch it outside of your control.

flashheartsmoustache · 25/06/2022 20:46

Erm, there's not much sex in it, that I recall? Violence & scariness, I grant you.

But I have 2 teens, (13 and 15) and they absolutely loved it. And I'd rather they watch a high-quality, fantastic piece of work with great acting than the utter dross (Love Island, I'm looking at you)

Also depends on the teens I guess.

PollyEsther · 25/06/2022 20:46

My 14 year old starting watching when the first season came out. He's not imploded yet. He absolutely adores it! Like Harry Potter, it's grown with him and that's been lovely to have alongside watching the series itself.

If it's not your child, it's not your business.

NippyWoowoo · 25/06/2022 20:47

See nothing wrong with a 14 year old watching it.

ElizaJones · 25/06/2022 20:47

14? Yeah yabu

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 25/06/2022 20:47

My 14 year old loves it
My 14 year old self would have been scared to shit but tv these days are very different to the 1980's
I used to watch Crimewatch in the 80"s downstairs by myself around aged 8-10 years old .. I was scared to shit watching that and would be scared to go up the stairs thinking someone was looking through the letterbox
The children these days would probably think it boring and hilarious at the same time

mrsfollowill · 25/06/2022 20:48

13+ should be OK for most. If your child has issues or is sensitive then no- it's pretty dark especially this latest season. I don't recall any 'sex scenes' at all but def Freddie Kruger vibes! Which I saw at 14 in the cinema - didn't scar me for life but I was nervous about falling asleep for a few days.

aSofaNearYou · 25/06/2022 20:48

It's not heavy on sex or language at all, but it does have fairly strong horror. I'd think 14 was about the right age for it though, personally.

LOL just seen this message.

He's 14. You lost sole control over the television he consumes a long time ago. Unless you stop him ever leaving the house, he will access what he wants to see eventually. I prefer not to overly control my children and have them rebel anyway.

cottagegardenflower · 25/06/2022 20:49

It has a tv rating of 14, which i think is appropriate

AlmostAJillSandwich · 25/06/2022 20:49

It is age rated for 14+, if your child isn't 14+, it's not appropriate.

There really isn't much by way of sexual content, but there is some bad language (not excessive) it's mainly the horror/gore, it is completely inappropriate for under 13's deffinitely, and more sensitive/easily scared 13 and 14 year olds.

cottagegardenflower · 25/06/2022 20:49

mind you, scares the shit out of me

neverbeenskiing · 25/06/2022 20:51

I work in a secondary school. At 14 I'm pretty sure he knows about sex, and will almost certainly have seen pornography online. There is nothing in Stranger Things thats worse than what 14 year olds see on Tik Tok or hear at school every day.
