*SPOILER ALERT* To think that Stranger Things is inappropriate for children / teens

My child wants to watch Stranger Things because all the other kids at school have watched it. From what I can see it features violence, sex, inappropriate language and very scary imagery. Surely parents shouldn’t be letting their young children and teens watch this!

Dear god

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/06/2022 21:21

My 11 year old has been asking about it, I plan to watch the earlier series with her - we tend to talk as we watch so it’s a good opportunity to chat through anything she doesn’t understand. I’ll hold back the 4/5 series until she’s a bit older.

Changingmynameyetagain · 25/06/2022 21:24

My 13 and 15 year old have both watched it and have loved it, it’s a bit dark in places but now more that I was watching at the same age.
I wouldn’t let my 11 year old watch it, but he’s more sensitive.

mamaduckbone · 25/06/2022 21:21

It depends on the child. Ds1 watched seasons 1&2 at about 11/12 (year 7) after we'd watched it first. He's 16 now and we're glued to season 4 together.
Ds2 is 12 now (year 8) and has tried it but didn't get any further than season 1 episode 1 when the demigorgon comes out of the wall.
There's no sex but it's pretty scary - certainly not appropriate for primary age children.

Well there is a bit of sex

LadyCatStark · 25/06/2022 21:28

Oh come on, it’s fine for a 14 year old and yes, most if not all of his friends will have/ be watching it.

of course it’s not suitable for young children but it’s fine for over 12s. DS (13) watched the first series at 11/12 and wasn’t traumatised one bit.

lljkk · 25/06/2022 21:28

um, the current series, I'll agree with 13+ minimum, more like 14+ for most kids.

The other series were scary but not as explicitly "horror" and suspensedful as current one. I'm a wuss about suspense & this is first series that made me leave the room sometimes. The violence in the Soviet prison is pretty awful, too.

leawakeford · 25/06/2022 20:45

He’s 14 and we don’t let any of the kids have free control over the TV or Netflix etc normally so making an exception for this seems a bit out of line with how we parent

Your 14 yo can’t choose what they want to watch on TV???

RoundaboutRacer · 25/06/2022 21:38

YABU now I see you're taking about a 14 year old.

Fine for that age.

StaunchMomma · 25/06/2022 21:38

My Mom self wants to agree with you BUT I absolutely loved horror films as a teenager and was defo watching eg Evil Dead, Nightmare on Elm St, IT etc at 13/14. Absolutely worse than Stranger Things.

Defo too scary for primary aged kids but from 13 I think it's down to the child.

My DS9 loves things like Goosebumps and has friends who find it too creepy. It's the same with adults really, isn't it? Some love horror and some hate it.

I'd worry more about my kid watching Game of Thrones, I think.

14? Wow. My 9 yr old watches it and loves it. Zero sex (apart from season 1 when Nancy and Steve got together so we fast forwarded that part)

It's absolutely not scarier than the likes of Freddy Kruger (whoever mentioned that) . My 10yr old doesn't want to watch it which is absolutely fine but son is a fan of mystical mythical type things anyway. He loves it. We watch it together!

The only other scene I wasn't happy with him watching is where 11 is recalling slaughtering the other children. He was fine with me telling him that's not appropriate. I just told him she was testing her powers and he was fine with that.

Kittybelle007 · 25/06/2022 21:44

😂 14? I genuinely thought you may have been talking about an 8 year old. Whilst it's scary there is very little sexual content. In terms of things he could be trying to watch, this is really not something that needs to be made a forbidden fruit.

Thebeastofsleep · 25/06/2022 21:46

Personally, given what you have said, I would watch it with them at 14 so he knows he can talk to you about it if he is scared. If he watches it with friends he may feel he can't talk about any issues it raises.

Schoolchoicesucks · 25/06/2022 21:46

My 13 year old is watching it with me. We watched S1-3 together earlier this year and now on S4.

S1 isn't especially scary, would think most 14 year olds could watch without issue. You know your dc though.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 25/06/2022 21:47

My teens are 17 and 18 I have no problems with them watching it.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/06/2022 21:51

Depends on the child, my 11 year old is fine with it although one of my older children probably wouldn't have been at the same age

At 14 you are being ridiculous

Buzzinwithbez · 25/06/2022 21:52

I thought the first one was quite intense as it was all new, so there was lots of build up and anticipation. 2 and 3 more Goonies like and develops the characters and their connections well. 4 is more scary, but my 12 year old, having watched the others thought it was fine.

NC12345665 · 25/06/2022 21:52

What parents do you know that are letting their young children watch it? Your son is in secondary school, the other "kids" at his school are teenagers.

BooksAndHooks · 25/06/2022 21:56

I don’t see it much worse than Jurassic park which is a 12. Especially the earlier seasons. My 13 year old is more than ready to watch it and watched the other seasons when he was 12.

How could anyone have an issue with an 18 yo watching anything?
They can watch what they want.

That's what I was thinking. Got to be a joke surely !

bro101 · 25/06/2022 22:01

Mine started to watch at 8 and 10. I've never seen it but I thought it was aimed at kids?

Notbeinfunnehbut · 25/06/2022 22:02

My 9 year old watches it loves it although I’ve vetoed season 4 for now

bro101 · 25/06/2022 22:03

Can I ask why?

Why I’ve vetoed or why he watches it?

my only criticism of ST is that it gets darker every season which is a shame for kids who enjoyed the earlier seasons

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/06/2022 22:08

Season 4s a bit darker and a little more frightening than the others
