*SPOILER ALERT* To think that Stranger Things is inappropriate for children / teens

leawakeford · 25/06/2022 20:39

My child wants to watch Stranger Things because all the other kids at school have watched it. From what I can see it features violence, sex, inappropriate language and very scary imagery. Surely parents shouldn’t be letting their young children and teens watch this!

Children and teens encompasses a wide age range. A four year old no, a fourteen year old would probably be fine.

DeadButDelicious · 25/06/2022 22:09

Have I blacked out and missed all the sex scenes in stranger things because I don't remember any?

I don't see a problem with a 14 year old watching it.

He’s 14 and we don’t let any of the kids have free control over the TV or Netflix etc normally so making an exception for this seems a bit out of line with how we parent

Maybe unclench

Mine started to watch at 8 and 10. I've never seen it but I thought it was aimed at kids?

Hmm

Sure thing.

@Jott Me too.
We watched whatever was rental from the video shop. 😅

The scarier the better and best alone when babysitting!!

Abraxan · 25/06/2022 22:11

I've not seen it but Dd has loved it for a while now.

Isn't it more of a teen/young adult programme anyway? So I'd have said 14y was fine for it.

Crocsandshocks · 25/06/2022 22:12

My 10 year old has world out a way to watch it using my Netflix login 🙄. He's nagged me about it for ages. He's up to season 3. I haven't watched it as I hate that vibe. I've told him there's absolutely no way he's going to watch season 4. I'm annoyed he's got this far to be honest, but he's obsessed.

DjoChateaux · 25/06/2022 22:13

Children no. Teenagers fine. There is one very mild, alluded to, sex scene in the whole of 4 series. It's really not that graphic, you see a bit of snogging, heavy breathing and a naked back. There is hardly any swearing and much less than he will be hearing and repeating at school. I'd not think a 14 year old would be that scared by any of it unless led a very sheltered life.

It's got a fantastic musical score that all teenagers should be educated about though!

By censoring stuff at 14 you are setting up an environment where they will watch and do stuff behind your back and wont come to you when it goes wrong because they will be too worried they are going to get in trouble.

Dont underestimate the value of teaching kids to select and explore their own viewing choices and therefore self censor.

weshouldeatcake · 25/06/2022 22:25

Depends on your child. My 11 yr old has asked to watch it as apparently all her friends have seen it. We said no. My 13yr old said all her friends have seen it and we didn't say she couldn't watch it but she has a vivid imagination and doesn't like scary stuff so we suggested that she doesn't watch it as we know she won't like the scary bits.

sHREDDIES19 · 25/06/2022 22:27

10 year old avid fan in my house, absolutely no issue here. We’re all different. We both love horror films too.

MrsMiddleMother · 25/06/2022 22:37

It's not for young children. Teens absolutely fine

MysteriousMonkey · 25/06/2022 22:42

Yep, mine have all seen it, youngest is 10. They all have the sensitivity of a rock and their main takeaway from it is that Dustin is awesome, which he is. Honestly I said no for ages but eventually agreed if they watched it with us and they were fine.

Mykittensmittens · 25/06/2022 22:44

Goodness.

My now 11 year old and his 13yo DS bloody love it. We watch along, and have very much come to enjoy it too.

DS says Dr Who is just as scary. And some parts of Star Wars or Marvels. For some people
violence is just as bad a horror. The worst parts for us are the tension (Max in series 4, waking up,
all four of us screaming ‘COME ON MAX!!!’ As she ran for the light…)

Everything is subjective. Every child is different. Only you know what your child can handle and more importantly enjoy, so it’s personal choice.

PeekAtYou · 25/06/2022 22:45

It might be unsuitable for some teens but is fine for most over 12s imo. Can't wait for the finale !!

sunshineandshowers40 · 25/06/2022 22:45

It depends on the child. My 11 year old (Y7) has watched it and enjoyed it but it would scare my 13 year old.

Eightiesfan · 25/06/2022 22:46

Half the Year 7s in my school have seen Game of Thrones and Squid Game. It’s shocking how they are given free range of Netflix.

However, your son is 14 so ST is perfectly fine. Believe me he probably sees and hears worse in the school playground!

I thought he was going to be junior school aged! 14 years, yes I would.

Tigresswoods · 25/06/2022 22:49

Sex reference: "how was the pull out Jonathan?"

Ponderingwindow · 25/06/2022 22:50

Most teens will be perfectly fine with the content. It’s scary, but not excessively so. It’s not really that violent in the grand scheme of media.

At its heart it is also a story about a group of kids who care about one another and use not just their superpowers, but their creativity and intelligence to save their friends.

there is some sex and drug use, but nothing particularly salacious. The show also doesn’t support unhealthy relationships which is something that often bothers me with media for teen viewing.

i would make a judgment call for anyone younger than 13 on a case by case basis. Some will be fine, some need to wait.

Lipsandlashes · 25/06/2022 22:51

14! Haha

liveforsummer · 25/06/2022 22:54

14 is absolutely fine and part of the target audience given the ages of the main characters. Dd12 has watched 1-3 and loved it but not sure about latest season. Will probably let her though with the warning that it's more scary. All her friends have watched it and in most ways their parents are stricter than me!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 25/06/2022 22:56

Totally fine for a 14 yo imo - I thought you were going to say 10. My 14yo is loving it but we watch it together when her younger siblings are in bed so we can chat about it and when it’s particularly traumatic we pop on an episode of task master for some light relief before bed. A 14yo with a parent controlling the TV this much feels smothering but then my 14yo is open with me and we have a good relationship so I do appreciate not everyone has that. (Not trying to sound smug - I’m expecting dtds to be much more challenging twins).

He’s 14?! I thought you were talking about primary school age kids.

If you don’t think your 14-year-old can cope with it, that’s absolutely fine. You know your own teenager. But YABU to think that it’s ‘inappropriate’ for other people to let their 14-year-olds to watch it.
