Horrible people (Why)

dottypotter · 24/06/2022 15:16

Why are there so many horrible people around? Why don't they want to be nice? Just an example and there are millions more. Just reading about a couple who were supplying drugs and when their home was searched they found indecent images of children? Why Why? Never makes sense to me, then you go to prison your banged up, nobody cares about you, you ruin your own life, loose your freedom. Does anyone else struggle to understand why people are so vile?

Wouldn't they even be embarrassed to be in prison? I would. I wouldn't want anyone knowing I was such a disgusting human being. All the prison officers and the public know what I've done.

Evil forces

You need to study more to avoid asking such inane questions in the future. A quick search on youtube should help to enlighten your naivety.

Itwasntmeright · 24/06/2022 15:27

I’m in no way excusing the actions of people who do such awful things, but there’s generally a reason why people do awful things, and it’s usually because they’ve been treated awfully themselves and never been shown how to be anything different. That doesn’t mean we owe them any sympathy or should excuse their awful behavior when they’re old enough to know better, but people aren’t born bad in my opinion, they’re made bad by vulnerability and circumstance.

Poor OP, another horrible person!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/06/2022 15:35

They dont have the tools to be nice.
Prison is the norm in some circles so no embarrassment.
It can also be a stabilising force - routine, 3 meals a day, limited choices.
Dont underestimate how big a role poverty, bad childhoods and poor mh play.

Was there any need to be so rude?

I'd suggest a quick search on YouTube for tips on how to improve your people skills, or you know, just not being a condescending, rude twat.

Therealpink · 24/06/2022 15:42

@Iwouldratherpullmyteethoutonebyone may not have been terribly diplomatic but the inability of people to grasp how we are all products of our environment, for better or worse, makes me pull my hair out.

OP why do you do what you do? And don’t tell me it’s because you’re just naturally a better, kinder, more empathic person.

orwellwasright · 24/06/2022 15:44

There are way more pleasant people than evil ones. But hearing about their exploits is dull as chuff so we don't.

There are around 53 million adults in the UK and maybe 88,000 in prison. So around 0.0016% of the adult population.

It's thought that a quarter of people in prison have ADHD and if you've been in local authority care as a child you're around 200 times more likely to go to prison.

And I can't even be bothered to start on social deprivation and what that does to your life chances

Most people aren't horrible. They just have really shit lives.

Fairislefandango · 24/06/2022 15:58

It's not remotely stupid, naïve or ignorant to ask this question or start a discussion about it. It's not as if there's just one simple answer to it! It's certainly something that philosophers have talked about for hundreds of years, and people continue to talk about now. I've no idea why those two posters were so rude, OP!

Your question about why people wouldn't be embarrassed is interesting. I guess when humans lived in small, close-knit communities, the public knowledge of a crime, the shame it carried, and the life-threatening prospect of being cast out of your community were strong deterrents. Now I guess it's possible to commit terrible crimes but feel more anonymous, especially if your crime is committed online.

Omg I didn't realise the statistics for people with ADHD were so high. Going to go and do some research now, thank you

Simple answer?Nature, nurture or a mix of both.

chairz · 24/06/2022 16:12

People talking about shit lives but there's plenty of people who have nice lives who do horrible things.

I saw a headline saying that so I can't vouch for the quality of the statement! Hence the lazy 'it's thought that' (can you tell I'm a journalist? 😄)

If you can't be bothered to check your sources but still want to make the point, be vague 😄

mosesbass · 24/06/2022 16:20

Also plenty of people who have shit lives and don't end up being horrible

No shit. Have you thought about being a sociologist? Those are some pretty insightful observations.

@orwellwasright why not enlighten the thread with some wisdom?

Lol. I'm not your personal search engine. Get googling. There'll be a gazillion books, articles, comments and opinion pieces on the causes of crime.

Tumbleweed is unlikely to be a contributing factor in criminality. You never know though. How's the googling going?

I don't get that how does being vulnerable and circumstances lead you to say abuse children etc or look at indecent pictures?

Yes because ppl are scummy and evil and selfish. No regard for anyone else whatsoever. Alot of people don't have a conscience.
