Would you live in a house number 13?

Lots of debate in my home. I’m not really bothered the house in number 13 but older relatives including both sets of parents really against us putting an offer in for a home that’s numbered 13!

what would you do? Not to drip feed but my culture and DH Culture (different culture from mine) are very superstitious

Why not?

www.huffpost.com/entry/friday-13th_b_1418812

It used to be considered lucky. This isn't the article I was trying to find as this one is about Friday 13th, but it still covers some of the belief about the number 13. If any of them are feminists, show them that 13 was lucky before the patriarchal revolution 🙂

Meadowbreeze · 21/06/2022 22:47

I'd love to know what they think of
13 Something road, flat 666.

I consider it a lucky number. DD was born on the 13th and so was my black cat. 😁

I'm probably a witch though 😂

anotherronnee · 21/06/2022 22:47

One of my parents homes that they grew up in was 13 and parents always say it was lucky as a result! It was a lovely cosy home. Remember even in bingo it’s “unlucky for some“ not all 🙂that said maybe different cultures have stronger feelings about the number 13 than mine.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 21/06/2022 22:47

I moved house on Friday the 13th because it was by far the cheapest Friday.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 21/06/2022 22:51

I am so the opposite of your mum that I would genuinely 100% discount what she said. Absolutely bizarre, does she also expect you to salute any magpies that land in the garden and be wary of black cats?

I don't entertain irrational objections to things I need to do.

OwlNoisesInHerFace · 21/06/2022 22:52

Can't remember exactly when the houses were built that I grew up in, maybe in the 70s I think. Ours should have been 13 but they skipped it so it's 15.

felicitycities · 21/06/2022 22:58

My grandfather used to say that it was lucky as their house (no 13) was the only house in their row to escape bombing during the war.

I think this was a true story! My grandfather wasn't known for exaggerating or making things up. It will out me to family members, though!

Jemimapuddleduk · 21/06/2022 23:04

Yes and we did for 10 years.

ExhaustedButHappy80 · 21/06/2022 23:08

I would, I’m not superstitious at all. No way DH would though, he’s always saying not to do things based on superstition!

Haribosweets · 21/06/2022 23:12

My road doesn't have 13 but has 12A. However it wouldn't put me off it my house was 13. I think you need to contact royal mail and council to look into changing numbers. Maybe 12A would be ok for your parents

CassTheFox · 21/06/2022 23:14

Haha I agree with @Basilbrushgotfat wouldn’t have a problem with number 13 but I wouldn’t want to be moving inside number 9! 😆

Timeandtune · 21/06/2022 23:19

Happy to acknowledge my own unreasonableness here but I couldn’t live in number 13 unless there was absolutely no
alternative.

I blame my mother who was very superstitious- I couldn’t walk under
a ladder or put new shoes on a table either.

In her defence she was from an NE coast fishing community who were known for their superstitions.

thegreylady · 21/06/2022 23:25

I do live at Number 13 . I have had some wonderful times and some hard times as has my friend who lives at number 22…

FlibbertyGiblets · 21/06/2022 23:35

13 fine. I would baulk at Number two (the room smelled like the number on the door #DeadMenDontWearPlaid ) tee hee hee

Throckmorton · 21/06/2022 23:48

It's a number, there is no such thing as fate, luck, or any other such nonsense. Tell them it's your house not theirs and you don't belive in superstition.

seaUrchinOne · 21/06/2022 23:57

I have done, and yes bad things happened but I guess that's part of life, ups and downs.

KrisAkabusi · 21/06/2022 23:59

Did for four years. Superstitions are nonsense.

Rosecottage888 · 22/06/2022 00:08

We live at number 13, no plans to go anywhere Smile

DrNo007 · 22/06/2022 00:14

I live at a number 13, it’s a lovely house and we are happy here.

Meraas · 22/06/2022 10:37

NewMe5452 · 21/06/2022 22:30

It’s really tough as I don’t want to dismiss 5 peoples opinions (DH N 2 sets of parents).

Your parents have no say in the house you buy.

riesenrad · 22/06/2022 11:16

I lived in a new build house before I lived in my current house. It was number 14. Next to 12. They didn't have a 13!

But I often thought it was "really" 13 and was superstitiously happy to move :)

LibraryFairy · 22/06/2022 11:21

I lived at number 13. I moved in on a Friday the 13th, and 13 months later threw a spooky theme party on another Friday the 13th.
Was a great house with lots of wonderful memories made there, and no-one ever mentioned thinking it was unlucky!

JohannSebastianBach · 22/06/2022 11:21

I grew up in a number 13. Never gave it a thought.

I would absolutely dismiss the thoughts of anyone who was worried about it.
