Husband keeps farting

I have a really stressful job and 4 teenagers and all I want to do now is flop on the sofa and watch something mindless. Husband is farting constantly and just shrugs when I ask him to stop. I want to kill him. Or leave. AIBU?

Be up front and don’t pussyfoot

Morechocmorechoc · 16/06/2022 20:15

When you have gas you have gas. Man needs to be comfortable!

Aquamarine1029 · 16/06/2022 20:18

Why is he farting "constantly?" That's not normal.

rumred · 16/06/2022 20:18

He needs to fart outside. Horrible behaviour on his part

CherryOh · 16/06/2022 20:19

I said ‘that’s disgusting, please stop’. Feel like sitting in the car for the next 2 hours until he goes to bed. I’m probably hot and bothered and grumpy about work but I just want to sit on my sofa in my house and watch a bit of rubbish on my telly without this constant trumping!

So he'd do it in the middle of an interview would he?

Totally no need for constant farting.

Bunty55 · 16/06/2022 20:23

Why is this a share ? Tell him to go to the toilet and take your fingers away from the keyboard

Whereismumhiding4 · 16/06/2022 20:24

Is this a change in his farting routine or has it just started to really get to you?

If it's a change - he needs to see a GP

If it's been constant and now you don't want him near you farting all the time, you're just going to have to ask him to try to leave the room as it's grossing you out ("and it won't make me fancy or want to sleep with you.."which is a fairly natural consequence when people display their disgusting personal habits!)

I have a farty son so you have my sympathy, but at least he leaves the room when he can, for me or apologies and if there's spray to hand (perfume) he uses that in the air.

Unfortunately his sisters have since told me when he leaves the front room for me he goes into their bedrooms to fart sometimes !!! Sibling bating!!! Confused (when he's back from uni I'll be having words with him! )

Giveitall · 16/06/2022 20:26

Look at his diet! Sounds like he might benefit from more green veg, fruit & lots more water. Can he take more exercise to help along that which is fermenting “up there?”
Ask pharmacy about pre & pro biotic supplements to balance the flora in his gut.
Lay off starchy carbohydrates, pastry, potatoes, baked beans, that kind of thing. It might take weeks to get over this.

His behaviour whilst probably challenging to control if it’s that bad, is disrespectful. Does he let rip in bed? Oh no!!

Ask him to work with you to get over this odious episode & learn how to overcome it again.
If he works in an office or enclosed space …. oh dear!

Should I need to tell a grown adult to go to the loo though?

I'm pretty sure that if Liz Hurley popped in for a cuppa his bum cheeks would be clamped so tight as to not let one out.

Your son farting in his sisters’ bedrooms did make me laugh 😂

Love it 😂

Workinghardeveryday · 16/06/2022 20:34

Wouldn’t bother me - unless they were stinky. Then I would get the rage

Whereismumhiding4 · 16/06/2022 20:34

Does he drink a lot of lager or ale OP? That'll make him farty

If he won't agree to change his personal habits, and if you do the majority of ten shopping and cooking, I'd be remarking that I'm changing what I buy for food as he farts all the time and believe his diet is causing the problem.

Let him eat kale 😂
(And salad etc.., less red meat and whatever else causes the farts !)

You might find he becomes more amenable to leaving the room to fart if by his doing it all the time it's affecting him negatively by being put in a diet and less beer in the house! It might work it might not, but it's make me feel less hopeless that he'll change

You’re right. It feels very disrespectful. Like he just doesn’t need to try any more.

We’ve been married a long time and i’m pretty relaxed about the occasional burp/fart. But he’s just behaving like a complete slob. Ugh.

Is this a new thing?

CherryOh · 16/06/2022 20:42

Thank you for the dietary advice too everyone. Really helpful. He does quite a lot of exercise and doesn’t drink beer but he does eat a lot of carbs (especially pasta). He also eats very quickly (always has). Maybe we need to switch things up a bit. Maybe I could kindly and calmly suggest a change of diet rather than actually murdering him🤔

OP posts:
CherryOh · 16/06/2022 20:44

I would say that he has been farting more than usual recently.

skybluee · 16/06/2022 20:48

You can buy pants that trap trumps in them I think. Someone was talking about them on another thread. Is it the noise or the smell that is bothering you? It would gross me out too. Not the trumps but his attitude towards it actually (just shrugging) when it obviously bothers you. How would he feel if you were both sitting there and you did a massive trump towards him?

SheWoreYellow · 16/06/2022 20:53

He just needs to try and let them out a bit more quietly, surely?

Anyone else not get the ‘go to the toilet’ advice? If I held it in, and missed the moment, it’s then not there any more. I’ll just get a sore, growly stomach. This happens at work.

Anon778833 · 16/06/2022 20:54

Tell him to eat better.

CherryOh · 16/06/2022 20:57

Trump trapping pants! Ideal for Father’s Day. 😀Seriously though it feels like my feelings don’t matter at all here. He would definitely not like it if I was doing it to him. If he has a medical problem/changes to bowel habits etc then he is a grown up and needs to go to the doctors, not just sit there grossing me out. He has form for completely ignoring my feelings on many issues.

Georgeskitchen · 16/06/2022 20:58

Fetch a Cork, and tell him to shove it up his arse.
Just make sure you're in a different town when he takes it out though 😉

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 16/06/2022 20:58

But farts are funny aren't they?

My dh and son(adult) fart loudly all the time. They rarely smell though.

It demonstrates how comfortable he feels around you. My dh and son hold them in when we have company.

Maybe a bit juvenile and inconsiderate given he knows you don't like it.

Maybe try and ignore him unless they stink. Then tell him he needs to change his diet.
I can't hold my farts. My dh has only relatively recently stopped being mock horrified when I accidentally let one rip. He often says "pardon" because he thinks I said somethingGrin
