Husband keeps farting

I have a really stressful job and 4 teenagers and all I want to do now is flop on the sofa and watch something mindless. Husband is farting constantly and just shrugs when I ask him to stop. I want to kill him. Or leave. AIBU?

@KosherDill Omg never farted in front of DP?! That's weird

Never ever.

I come from a family where it wasn't done. Never witnessed either of my parents or siblings either. The matter wasn't even referred to.

I'd bin a man who disrespected me so much.

Don't see what the problem is.
It's a natural body function.

If you're in the comfort of your own home then let rip.

I totally agree.

We fart whenever the urge hits here. Farts are hilarious anyway, and much better out than in.

We're obviously more circumspect if we have visitors, but not otherwise. It is very liberating.

I used to have this issue with my husband when we first moved in together. He knew I didn’t like it as like some PPs, you don’t fart in front of others in my family. Yet he would still fart followed by a “sorry“.

One day I got annoyed and told him that he’s showing complete disrespect for me, as he knows I don’t like it but he still does it, so he’s showing he doesn’t give a damn about how I feel. Since then he hasn’t farted in front of me.

Felicity42 · 17/06/2022 02:35

Buy yourself another TV or laptop and put it in another room or your bedroom. Then you can watch what you like in peace.

This is great advice.

I'd be sleeping in another bedroom, too.

KosherDill · 17/06/2022 02:41

Defecating is natural bodily function, too.

SpangledShambles · 17/06/2022 02:53

I have a really serious medical condition, one of many side effects is gaseous ahem… if I can hold it in and be respectful of my family’s peaceful evenings so can your DH, OP.

Badgerforbreakfast · 17/06/2022 03:05

What a funny thread!!

We are quite free farters in this house but I would like to think if someone was genuinely offended it would stop.

The toilet is another story though! I can’t understand these couples who will use the toilet in front of each other. My DH came into the bathroom for a ‘sit down pee’ while I was brushing my teeth last night and I literally ran out of the house scream-laugh-crying!

blown away <snort>

muimpre · 17/06/2022 06:20

I’m pretty sure Christina Perri did a song about this.

This made me laugh Grin

You can’t possibly know that.
After birthing 2 dc and getting piles, menopause and then stomach ulcers I fart a lot.
I hate it, it upsets me much more than dh.

And if Daniel Craig walked into our house and I was having a bad day I would still fart if I moved. Sometimes I’m like a pillar of rock when I’m out because I’m so worried about farting!

Same in my family and I married a man who doesn't fart loudly in front of me. If he farted and burped freely in front of me it would put me off him we just don't do it loudly in front of each other . It's a different story when asleep though haha

Summerwetordry · 17/06/2022 07:28

My DH has had surgery that means he can't burp anymore. It all comes out the other end. Now I've got to have the same surgery. I guess none of you will want to visit us, as due to weak muscles in that area, I can't physically hold them in. Maybe OP's DH is unable to hold on to them.

LilianLenton · 17/06/2022 07:40

I recently listened to a podcast series called "Gutfull" about digestive health, it covered all sorts of issues around why people fart & how to reduce it naturally.

Oh I forgot to add. I also told him that I find it a real
turn off and it makes him unattractive, and if he wants his girlfriend (at the time) to be turned off by him then carry on farting.

I'm with you on that. I have the sense of humour of a six year old though, and find them funny.

If they're stinky, it's polite to leave the room imo.

kimfox · 17/06/2022 08:52

Start feeding him kimchi and kombucha - in the meantime, until you have been to the shops for things to improve his gut biome, set up a chair / phone stand outside - ask him to do a spurious outside task and then bolt the doors. I could lend you a tent.

Highlyquestionablehoumous · 17/06/2022 09:01

It’s grim and not sexy??

My DH has seen me shit myself whilst a man had his leg up on the table pulling a baby out of my vagina with a pair of BBQ tongs.

I think that ship sailed a good while ago....

Do you not talk about anything 'icky' at then, like having the shits, or having piles, or period stuff? None of that is 'sexy' either?

I'm not saying I fart in front of other people or anything, but your own family, especially your DH, I find really weird.

No, we don't. Some people actually are capable of withholding TMI. And handling minor bodily ailments without broadcasting the details to others.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 17/06/2022 13:00

My medication makes me fart constantly and makes me feel incredibly bloated all the time. Could it be meds?
But then I live on my own, if I lived with someone else no way would I do that I'd go out of the room. i mean you wouldn't do that at work would you? If he can control it at work then he can control it at home.
That would make me leave someone tbh.

pantherrose · 17/06/2022 13:06

Agree with the poster that said it's disrespectful and boorish.

Disagree with the poster that suggested a cork up his arse - He could break a window Grin

Badger1970 · 17/06/2022 13:09

DH has got a hiatus hernia and sits most evenings belching/farting and it's even worse when he hasn't had his omeprazole tablet. He'll even do it while others are eating around him. Hence we never go out for meals anymore as people stare.

Between that and his constant sniffing/shoving tissue up his nose I'm millimetres away from a murder charge.

BluebellField · 17/06/2022 13:10

I think the odd fart I can understand. Maybe one or two farts per night. But this seems extreme. Never ending farts?
