Gardener moved in!

About a month ago our gardener turned up on our doorstep with all his stuff in bin bags. His partner had thrown him out. He had no where to go, so we let him stay with us. We are not friends and have a professional relationship but we have enough room for him and he would have slept in his car otherwise. He says he will start to look for a rental this week but he’s been understandably quite low and hasn’t started yet but I trust he will.
The problem is he likes to go to the gym at 5.15 am and it wakes us all up. Is it unreasonable to ask him to go at a later time? We have two small kids and my husband has a very demanding job.
thanks

I am generally pretty gullible but I refuse to believe this story.

LemonSwan · 10/06/2022 10:21

@BarbaraofSeville

I too think the most bizarre thing about this is gardener who gyms.

Swim maybe, or some kind of class like Thai Chi, or Yoga.

But actually gym gym - never known a proper gardener who gyms.

And by proper I mean a proper border gardener not a man with tools type gardener; which I assume is the type OP has.

fruitbrewhaha · 10/06/2022 10:22

Haven't you got exams for which you should be studying OP? Or at least some school work.

stepuporshutup · 10/06/2022 10:32

Our gardener is due here at 11am. I am going to watch out for any black bags that follow the lawn mower out of his van. Then do a very mumsnet thing and not answer the door😀

FigTreeInEurope · 10/06/2022 10:47

Why does he wake you? Surely he's been coming in the tradesman's entrance?

user1471505356 · 10/06/2022 10:53

At least your garden should look lovely.

HydraWater · 10/06/2022 10:54

Does he look after your bush in lieu of rent.

godmum56 · 10/06/2022 10:56

sttles down with comfy chair and popcorn

Actually, on this occasion I would say the responses are very amusing.

stepuporshutup · 10/06/2022 11:35

Gardener turned up no black bags phew.

Got talking and I said you look well have you been on holiday. No he has moved in with friends a month ago, it is like staying in a five star hotel.

The food is so good that now he needs to get up at 5.15 to go to the gym otherwise he would be a right porker.
Who knew this is a thing with gardeners

Penguinevere · 10/06/2022 11:40

Come on op humour us with another update. You have a handful of earnest responses so this wasn’t a total failure. You can keep going.

milkmaiden · 10/06/2022 12:01

You let a man you don't know personally stay in the same house as your children?

2bazookas · 10/06/2022 12:27

You sound very selfish and entitled. The obvious solution is to raise the gardeners wages so he can afford a mortgage, give him the deposit, and some of your furniture. Meanwhile, you and/or DH should be offering whatever physical and emotional comforts he needs.

Flipflopblowout · 10/06/2022 12:31

You have done him a favour but now his lifestyle is affecting your lifestyle. You need to have the chat, he either adjusts his routine so that it is child friendly and give him 14 days notice or he leaves tomorrow.

Just say, 'Sling your hoe, Monty Don! It's time you found somewhere to live.'

Good point @Mom757855 is he doing lots of gardening for free in return for your extraordinary generosity??

Momicrone · 10/06/2022 15:47

He sounds self absorbed and selfish

Boxowine · 10/06/2022 15:55

If Monty Don showed up at my house I would let him move in all right. I can't picture this, though. Is he living in the house? What do you all do at meal times? What about showers or is that why he's at the gym so early?

SqueakyShoe · 10/06/2022 16:52

Come back OP!

You been busy today cleaning your gardener's room, making your gardener's dinner and washing your gardener's pants?

Does your gardener sit down in the mornings for a bowl of cornflakes with your kids while you make everyone a packed lunch?

I can't imagine how awkward this would all be!

I mean, I don't think that's the only problem, is it?
