To HATE going to the hairdressers

Hairdyeoutofabox · 08/06/2022 11:10

Due to go this afternoon, feel like cancelling
Like the feeling after hair is done, but hate the process, mainly sitting in the chair and looking at my fat head in the mirror 🙈I just will them to get on with it, feel so self conscious!

Anyone else a weirdo like me?

Not fair on the hair dresser to cancel so last minute really

flowerexpress · 08/06/2022 11:18

Yeap - I have body dysmorphia and find anything involving mirrors really tricky. Hope it goes well/quickly for you :)

Usernamenotallowed · 08/06/2022 11:19

I hate going. I haven't been since May 2019. I now just get my DH to trim my hair. I haven't noticed any difference in how it looks, it never looked great even after the hairdresser and I've tried many different ones. I might change my mind one day but I will continue to avoid going for now. I hate the whole process.

Hairdyeoutofabox · 08/06/2022 11:19

@Applespearsandoranges I won’t cancel, but feel like it, but obviously won’t

I still wear a mask at the hairdressers so I don't have to look at my ageing face. They are a godsend 😂

Zippidy123 · 08/06/2022 11:20

I absolutely hate it as well, I hate everything about it-the small talk, catching eachothers eye in the mirror, starting at yourself, at the end when they show you the back, the pain of the hair wash basins. DH started trimming mine in lockdown and I haven't had a professional cut since, my hair looks OK, definitely not its best but it's worth it to avoid the horror of the hairdressers. Can you tell I'm socially awkward as fuck?!

Moosake · 08/06/2022 11:20

Wear a face mask

funinthesun19 · 08/06/2022 11:21

I get you. I feel the same.
And I always feel boring when I don’t really talk and just sit there in silence. I like sitting there in silence🙂.

Stroopwaffels · 08/06/2022 11:21

My hairdresser comes to the house. SO much better. She has been coming for about 12 years so we know each other well and have a good chat, she's great fun. So much better than sitting in a salon being expected to make strained conversation with a teenage stylist.

XrayFish · 08/06/2022 11:21

Get one that comes to your house next time. Mirrors entirely optional. And it's cheaper.

MeanderingGently · 08/06/2022 11:23

Just do your own, I have done so since 2018. I have no cutting skills although I already could blow dry it myself anyway. I use decent scissors, it's possible to style it, even the back. Hair is very forgiving, it just grows again if you cut it wrongly and after a few goes you will get the hang of it. It won't be like a professional cut, obviously, but good enough for every day. Saves on money, trips to the hairdresser and loads of anxiety.

MintJulia · 08/06/2022 11:26

I used to hate it too- stuck in front of a mirror for hours. Then I became a single mum and it's the only two hours peace I ever get.
I get nice coffee, a head massage, adult conversation, it's bliss 😁

Somuddled · 08/06/2022 11:26

I hate every part of it other than the head massage. I hate being put in a gown. Hate the noise. Hate wayer dripping into my ears. Hate staring at myself for ages. Hate thinking of what to say. Hate the sound of the scissors. I have tried a few things, usually when I book I say I generally find getting my hair cut quite uncomfortable and so may not be chatty and might need to focus on reading a book. They have always responded well other than one lady who said 'that's strange' so I didn't book with the.

I wrote a post about it years ago and loads of hairdressers came on to say they have had lots of people make specific requests, including having the mirror covered up so they didn't have to stare at themselves. Find somewhere understanding.

watcherintherye · 08/06/2022 11:30

Yes! (Not agreeing with the weirdo bit, though!) I haven’t been to the hairdressers for decades. Same reason as you. That’s why I found myself a lovely hairdresser who comes to me and no mirrors involved (except at the end when I go upstairs to have a look in the most flattering mirror in the house! Grin)

Hairdyeoutofabox · 08/06/2022 11:32

I only ever ask for a quick wash and dry, a rough blow dry as I’ll do it at home, that cuts the time down a bit. I have a 3 year old so always say I have to rush back to them 🤷🏻‍♀️
Would it be rude to go on my phone?

Also having my eyebrows done, but don’t mind that as much as I just lie down

I can’t understand people who love it and spa days/treatments etc

Put on some make-up.

I always put on a small bit before an appointment, the style always looks better afterwards.

SlashBeef · 08/06/2022 11:36

I LOATHE it!! I stare at my silly potato face feeling absolutely repulsed.

Aprilx · 08/06/2022 11:37

I used to hate it, I still don’t enjoy it. I don’t like looking at myself in a mirror for two hours. I enjoy the spa as I don’t have to gaze at myself in the mirror.

Stickytreacle · 08/06/2022 11:39

I stopped going about thirty years ago, I've trimmed and highlighted my own since then. I never liked how a hairdresser did mine and the relief of not having constant appointments to dread is great.
I do appreciate that hairdressers do a great job, and I'm sure the majority of clients enjoy it as a treat, but it's not for me.

Sassifrass · 08/06/2022 11:40

The bit I really hate is the hair washing. For some reason my eyes run and I actually feel physically sick! Not sure why but wonder if it’s only me?

Useranon1 · 08/06/2022 11:41

Just take a book and open it when they start. They'll leave you alone - portably be glad of not having to ask yet another person about their summer holiday plans!

galacticpixels · 08/06/2022 11:43

I hate it too! I got my hair cut on Saturday for the first time in six months. Thankfully the hairdresser wasn't chatty, but I still hated staring at myself - I think most people feel unattractive with wet hair and a plastic cape over them!

I just awkwardly avert my eyes. Going on my phone never seems to work because then the poor hairdresser spends her time moving my head back into the right position.

RestingMurderousFace · 08/06/2022 11:44

I loathe it, would much rather go to the dentist!

Belovedfool · 08/06/2022 11:48

Me too. I've changed to a hairdresser who comes to my home, cuts my hair, chats cats (as one of my 3 will be curious enough to pop in), and leaves. No hours on chair getting styled and sprayed. She just gives me a nice cut and goes. It's lovely.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/06/2022 11:49

Nope, me too, hated it so just don’t go. Trim it myself, always looks ok.
