To HATE going to the hairdressers

Hairdyeoutofabox · 08/06/2022 11:10

Due to go this afternoon, feel like cancelling
Like the feeling after hair is done, but hate the process, mainly sitting in the chair and looking at my fat head in the mirror 🙈I just will them to get on with it, feel so self conscious!

Anyone else a weirdo like me?

I've not been for 15 years, it's optional. I presume people go because they enjoy it. Stop going if you don't. I have weird hair which always looks worse after I go to a hair dresser because they always blow dry it straight or straighten it if I ask them not to wash it. By the afternoon it's wavy bushy and frizzy again and their straight cut looks worse than before they did it. Let alone how awful it looks if they attempt something to thin it out. I just do it myself. No one has ever commented on it so I assume it doesn't look that out of the ordinary.

Blossomandbee · 08/06/2022 11:52

I haven't been for years, I got sick of trying to find a decent one, asking for advice and getting shrugged off, paying out for bad haircuts - I've asked for a long choppy bob so many times and come out with an awful bowl cut every single time.
I trim it myself now. I'd love to go if I knew I would have some style advice, a friendly chat and a decent cut.

katrizia127 · 08/06/2022 11:56

I loathe going to the hairdressers. I have long hair and they seem to take it as apersonal affront. I've never had a haircut that I've been happy with, they just seem to do whatever they want and disregard the photos I show of how I want my hair. And stylists seem to take great delight in hacking my fringe to death.

AmbushedByCake · 08/06/2022 11:58

As others have said, a mobile hairdresser coming to your house is sooooo much nicer than a salon. No stupid mirror, no faffing, no horrible sink, no hairdryers and background noise so you can't even hear the awkward chit chat and have to lip read and guess. And far cheaper.

stratforduponavon · 08/06/2022 12:00

I dont mind going. However if you really dont feel comfortable then dont go.

I see a few people have said their partner or themselves cut their hair and it looks just fine. Sorry, but it really wont.... if it did then hairdressers wouldnt be a thing!

Get one that comes to your house next time. Mirrors entirely optional. And it's cheaper.

I hate it too. Used to go very regularly. I haven't been for 2 years now. For the first time, my hair is growing thicker and slightly longer. I had very bad hair breakage. The Dr's thought it was my thyroid, but the results came back normal. I since found out (by enquiry into which shade home dye, to use during lock down) that they had switched from my preferred hair tint, to pure bleach. Which explained the state of my hair, at the time. I'm glad to have had a break from the salon, but will have to go back at some point for a trim. Don't think most people like going?

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 08/06/2022 12:08

Not had my hair cut for years and years. I just hate going.

Ooook then. You seen these people's hair have you?

SirenSays · 08/06/2022 12:13

Can you look for a mobile hairdresser? Mine is great and now I can relax in my own home with a cocktail while she does it. So much better than breaking my neck on those sinks or wondering if I've always looked like THAT in those mirrors.

ObjectionHearsay · 08/06/2022 12:16

I hate going too, staring at my face for an hour is not something I enjoy doing. 😂

I'm relatively pretty and attractive apparently so I've been told, but still I can't stand it.

I cut my own hair, looks fine, people always comment it looks lovely and they've no idea I cut it myself 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

dudsville · 08/06/2022 12:16

I hated hairdressers. Once when I was able to afford a really expensive salon over a couple of years, yonks ago, I was always pleased with the outcome (not the process - salons are massivley overwhelming), but I've tried so many affordable salons over the years and I'm never happy with the outcome. I presume it's just that I'm incapable of communicating what I want (I take pics).

I started doing my own after my last dissapopintment, this was several years ago. I get compliments, and I think mine looks average or better than average, regardless.

skybluee · 08/06/2022 12:20

Yes I literally hate it. A few years ago I had a really bad experience. For starters they started locking the door (locking us in!) because there had been a lot of thefts from the coat rack which is right by the door. So that felt a bit weird. Then I had quite a bad cut - one side was almost an inch longer than the other, and when I went back she was a bit weird about it and I felt uncomfortable. I cut it myself to amend it and actually preferred it, so since then I stopped going.

TBH over the years it's saved me quite a lot of money. Even though it was very inexpensive, it still adds up when you go every few months. I quite enjoy cutting my hair. But I have long hair that's all one length so I appreciate it's easier to do so. If I had short hair or layers I doubt I'd be able to do it properly, especially the back.

Now I find it relaxing and don't have to worry about it. I also use the money I saved on nicer shampoo/conditioner.

Justjoinedforthis · 08/06/2022 12:23

I have started closing my eyes for the whole process, I probably look a bit odd but I don’t care. Staring directly at my face for forty minutes, nein danke

Wexone · 08/06/2022 12:25

I like going but hate the small talk and looking at me in the mirror
To avoid this i go to the same hairdressers so they know me and what i want. I bring my book or magazines to read - i sit at the chair don't look at the mirror or speak till finish. I am not rude, i am polite and speak when spoken to , say please and thank you too

godmum56 · 08/06/2022 12:26

I used to go when I kept my hair short...it was a necessity not a pleasure. Decided to have one last hippy hoorah and grow my hair so I stopped going and don't miss it.

Irishfarmer · 08/06/2022 12:32

@Sassifrass why not go in with your hair wet? Or sometimes depending on what they are doing they don't need to wet it at all.

Ihatethenewlook · 08/06/2022 12:34

I absolutely detest going. I just find the whole process boring and I get very frustrated. I could not go but my hair (if done professionally) is my only really nice feature, I feel absolutely awful about myself if it’s not done. I can’t do it myself as it’s incredibly thick and long and I get foils put in, takes a professional hair dresser about 4 hours

Nadal · 08/06/2022 12:36

I've always hated it. But as I am now getting older, I really don't want to be sat looking into a mirror for an hour.

And I always want to wash and restyle asap.

orangeisthenewpuce · 08/06/2022 12:39

I love going. I'd go a couple of times a week just for a wash and blow dry if I could afford it. Any decent hairdresser won't mind if you say you're just going to read. In fact they'd probably prefer it because they get fed up making small talk too.

Crocsandshocks · 08/06/2022 12:41

Hairdresser I can manage. Dentist is a different story at the moment.

XenoBitch · 08/06/2022 12:46

I hate it too. It boggles my mind when people say they go as a treat. It is the same as going to the dentist for me. I can't stand being touched at all, and the mirror and small talk just adds to it all.
I had my first salon appointment in my 30s, and the stylist kept commenting on how terrified I looked. Never went back. I tried a few other times, but with the drop in ones. They vanished over Covid and many have not come back.

My hair looks like shit, and I get my mum to (badly) trim split ends off now.

bevelino · 08/06/2022 12:49

I have literally never met a hairdresser who doesn’t cut hair too short. The ones I have met always say the are not reducing the length, while continuing to cut with scissors. It drives me insane.

Dalekjastninerels · 08/06/2022 12:53

I went today , hate the before when my fringe is too long and my roots are showing, find the process boring, but like the massage chair the best plus my hair looking nice when I leave,

Dalekjastninerels · 08/06/2022 12:55

leave.
