Labour leader reacts to PM's victory

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has responded to tonight's result, saying a "divided" Conservative party is "propping up" Boris Johnson after the prime minister survived the confidence vote.
"The choice is clearer than ever before: Divided Tories propping up Boris Johnson with no plan to tackle the issues you are facing," Starmer tweeted.
"Or a united Labour Party with a plan to fix the cost-of-living crisis and restore trust in politics.
"Labour will get Britain back on track."

I saw him but didn’t get a snap

comealongponds · 06/06/2022 21:24

It’s really fucking depressing that 211 elected representatives are happy for Johnson to represent them and lead the country, despite everything that he’s done to damage the Conservative party, government and the whole country. Selfish fuckers thinking only of saving their own skins

ChickenBurgers · 06/06/2022 21:25

Problem is, whilst he’s awful and has been a nightmare since he was elected, who the hell else in that party would be any better?? No-one. There is no-one who could take over who wouldn’t be just as awful.

Also, I’d wager some voted confidence even if they didn’t believe it because the PM’s position is a bit of a poisoned chalice at this point.

LakieLady · 06/06/2022 21:25

They're in full on "draw a line, move on" mode, but this isn't going away.

They have a lame duck leader and less than 2 years before the next GE.

Good.

Slightly worried it was about the lack of taxis

If you think that Johnson had 170 voters in jobs, and nearly all of those would vote for him, then you see getting 211 votes in total was a bad result. Effectively, he only convinced 42 colleagues to vote for him, whereas the rest do not want him. He's absolutely finished.

Never thought of it like that.

That's a more comforting statistic.

Simonjt · 06/06/2022 21:25

That was closer than I expected it to be, lets see where the wanker stands in a few months time.

My MP is an utter douche bag he'd vote for him.

He will be gone by Xmas

Libertybear80 · 06/06/2022 21:27

A conservative mp is saying he will be gone by Autumn

They are off to a pub in Lincoln fields

42isthemeaning · 06/06/2022 21:28

I'd worry that as despicable as Johnson is, if he went now, that the Tories would manage to rebrand themselves as being the new electable Tories 'not like that Partygate lot' and then we get landed with them for another decade.
With Johnson at the helm they'll never win the next election.

LakieLady · 06/06/2022 21:29

That's a worse result than Thatcher, May or Major got, and we all know what happened to them.

DirtyteaCup · 06/06/2022 21:29

Well I think that I am signing off
available for the next drama in the British political landscape

Zahawi: PM won handsomely

Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi, who said he would back Johnson before the vote, says the PM won 'handsomely".
"I hope we can draw a line under this issue," he adds.

That gave me a coughing fit. Handsomely.
