Let down after buying ed sheeran tickets for family

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 22:52

Aibu to be massively annoyed at being let down just 2 weeks before the concert when i booked and paid for the tickets in September last year?
Basically i live 200 miles away from all my family and normally only see any of them 2/3 a year when i visit. I always stay with a certain relative that im very close with and last year she had a horrible time when her abusive husband left her for someone else which i did my best to help her through.
So as a treat and to cheer us both up i booked the tickets near her so we could have a really nice girls day out and something to look forward to. I booked time off work (unpaid) so i could travel up and spend time with her and her 2 dds, as well as catch up with other family.

She was working when i booked the tickets so i checked with her first and said Book it off work now.
She then got the sack and has been out of work since.
We spoke last week and discussed plans and the concert ect..all good.

Today she messaged me shes got her old job back, starts this weekend and wont be able to get the night off... Can i take someone else with me?

I said just tell them you cant work that day.... But shes just saying she probably cant as thats why she got the sack before.
It also means ive now got no where to stay as if shes working she will have to have her sister stay over to have the 2dd so no room for me.

So im now not sure what to do now.
Probably try to sell the tickets and cancel my holiday as well

Am i being unreasonable or is she being ungrateful?

YABU to buy Ed Sheeran tickets!

DressingGownofDoom · 25/05/2022 22:54

Of course her job has to come first, she's hardly going to risk her job over Ed Sheehan tickets after they've just taken her back!

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 22:56

Shes not even started yet.. All i said was tell them you cant work that day due to prior engagement.. We have people do it all the time wherr i work if they start a new job and already have a holiday booked.. Its even on the forms.. Is there any dates you are not available for?

I think she has been unemployed and now has a job. That's more important. I'd try to find another friend to go with.

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 22:58

@ChagSameachDoreen yes thank you.. 🤣🤣 I wont be doing so again.. Especially not 200 miles away when he is literally playing this weekend not far from me

I think she needs to prioritise her job over a concert, as inconvenient as that is for you.

Can't you try and find another friend to go with you and split the cost of a Premier Inn or something?

butimjayigetaway · 25/05/2022 23:02

Just bring another lucky friend. I don't like Ed Sheeran but I'd still go to a concert as the atmosphere of a concert is always nice.

She doesn't have anywhere to stay now.

MelonsMelonsMelons · 25/05/2022 23:03

Look on the bright side, it’s got you out of two hours worth of Ed Sheeran.

YABU to buy Ed Sheeran tickets!

LOL

stepuporshutup · 25/05/2022 23:04

Properly have to give them away🤣

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 23:07

@coffeecupsandfairylights not with such short notice and a 200 mile drive and no where to stay. My friends where i live are going this weekend and i could of gone with them and come home after but tried to do something nice for her instead.
I know she needs the job but if someone bought me a ticket and were putting themself out to do something nice for me id try a bit harder to sort it out

It's disappointing but I imagine after being out of
Work for so long she wants to get back earning and working

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 23:10

@butimjayigetaway my local friends are going this weekend not far from me. I chose to book tickets near her (200miles away) to go with her as a treat.. Plus i now have no where to stay and i cant drive there and back in one day...

@MelonsMelonsMelons regretting putting ed sheeran in the title now 🤣🤣

I think sell the tickets and go with your friends closer to you if you can.

your relative might be really stressed and afraid to mess up with the job

catandcoffee · 25/05/2022 23:11

OP, no good turn goes unpunished...remember that next time.

You've done a lovely thing and it's backfired.
Any chance you can sell the tickets and get one closer to home.

Musicalmaestro · 25/05/2022 23:14

I’d try to get a ticket to go with your friends, and sell the other tickets.

MunchMunch · 25/05/2022 23:14

What's wrong with Ed?! 😮 I'm going to see him next week with the dc.

Yeah op I'd be a bit annoyed as well. I understand she's just got her job back but I agree she could at least ask for the time off/tell them she already has plans for that day and it cost a lot of money then they might be understanding and agree she can have that day off/swap shifts etc.

NorthernLights5 · 25/05/2022 23:15

I know she needs the job but if someone bought me a ticket and were putting themself out to do something nice for me id try a bit harder to sort it out even if it was potenially at the expense of the job when you have 2 children to support?

LocalHobo · 25/05/2022 23:16

Are you able to sell them? I think promotors have measures in place to make the person who bought them attends to avoid ticket touts. At least, that is the case for Cardiff this weekend.
It is a shame your kind gesture hasn't worked out

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 23:16

@inmyslippers and i totally get it but the reasons why she got the sack before havent changed so it will just happen again. Her shifts are friday to monday 6pm to 6am and shes a single mum so that means her sister has to have the dds which neither her sister or the dds like.

OP posts:
Brefugee · 25/05/2022 23:18

If you can possibly go, OP, go. Ed Sheeran haters can get in the sea: he is fantastic in concert and the work he's done with less well-known singers and bands has given some people a real career boost.

And i agree with you that she could have asked for that time off due to a prior commitment, although i understand why she might not want to.

lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 23:19

@LocalHobo i did look into it earlier but it would be at a loss.. Its not so much the money but ive literally looked forward to going with her and also having the time off to spend with her which was the main reason for the holiday. I guess im more upset thats shes not that bothered

OP posts:
lonelylou09 · 25/05/2022 23:22

@SalmonEile i wouldn't be able to do that now as they have already booked thier weekend so i cant tag along.. Plus.. Ironically.. I have work i cant get out off due to having this time off booked since September
