Fashion is just being skinny

So I've been thinking about this a lot and came across some social media posts of celebs in tracksuits / the Princess Diana long t shirt and bike shorts etc. and the comments are always 'fashion (some fire emoji or heart)' but it's not is it? It's just a skinny person in clothes that if a non-skinny person wore, would look like they made no effort?

I know people who aren't stick thin look good in certain outfits and that there are more interesting fashion choices (I love Self-Portrait and Reformation) but realistically, so many 'trends' only look good on thin people.

Is this all in my head?

Defo not in your head.

There is a social media trend where a normal sized person copies the outfit of a skinny person from fashion site of the skinny persons SM.

Then people ask is this fashion or is she just skinny?

So you're defo not the only one to have noticed this!

LisaSimpson1984 · 25/05/2022 12:36

Nope it’s not in your head. Skinny people can wear anything and it usually looks great. Loads of clothes don’t scale upwards well.

I’m a size 12-14, with a c-section tummy. I am dieting just now. But I find that most size 14 tops will be pulled tight across my stomach (but too big across my shoulders and chest). It’s not realistic. Many people who are a size 14 don’t have washboard stomachs 🤨

catscatscatseverywhere · 25/05/2022 12:37

YANBU. Whatever skinny person wears, it looks good. It's not that this particular piece of clothing is pretty.

MsTSwift · 25/05/2022 12:38

My 13 year old who is very tall slim and beautiful looks amazing in everything. Everything looks good on her. Reminds me why models are that shape the rest of us mere mortals just cannot even compete.

Fairislefandango · 25/05/2022 12:43

Mostly YANBU. But... there are also non-skinny people (irl and in the media who do wear fashionable clothes and look good.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 25/05/2022 12:46

Yes you’re definitely right. Also Diana looked crap in those bike shorts as do all the teens wearing them now. Ugliest shorts ever invented.

Most clothes are designed to look good on size 8 or smaller I think. Shame as the average size is nowhere near that!

TheDuchessOfMN · 25/05/2022 12:48

Only Diana could look good in that, so you’re right, it was her height and physique, not the actual clothes

Fizbosshoes · 25/05/2022 12:49

I would also add tall.
I am very short and although not overweight would look nothing like the image of people a foot taller.

notsoskinny · 25/05/2022 12:49

hmm it is just such a shame. I am a size 8-10 but have boobs/hips/bum and don't look good in big tops/tracksuit bottoms, I look like a frump. It's making keeping on trend hard...because all the skinny tall girls look stunning but I feel like I've been forced into thinking that way!

The power of the media.

Please do share any women who are fashionable despite not being a stick!

I thought it was fashionable now to have a big, curvy bum. I say this as someone with a chronically flat if not concave bum.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 25/05/2022 12:52

I'm a size 8 and look utterly ridiculous in lots of things, and if I haven't made an effort it shows, I look like a thin tramp!

BackToTheTop · 25/05/2022 12:53

I completely agree with you op.

faithinnature1 · 25/05/2022 12:53

I agree, I always think that when someone like Kate moss is shown wearing a really bog standard outfit and it is called fashion, it's just because of her skinniness it looks good and fame is why we see it

Thatswhyimacat · 25/05/2022 12:53

But they're right that it is 'in fashion'. If they wore something out of style like mid rise bootcuts tucked into pirate boots, they'd still look good, but they are specifically wearing things that are currently fashionable, even if they only look good on skinny people.

AgentJohnson · 25/05/2022 12:54

Oh dear God Op! Im sure the size of model has an impact but the person being a celeb, probably is the greater contributor to people breaking out the fire emoji’s.

LovelyHelpfulStaffMember · 25/05/2022 12:54

I remember Caitlin Moran making the point (in I think it was How to be a Woman) that women used to wear clothes that were especially made for them. That one unique body. So you had fewer clothes but what you did have suited you and actually fit.

Someone like Marilyn Monroe who was generally accepted to be beautiful would not suit or fit into 90% of Fashion.

Thatswhyimacat · 25/05/2022 12:55

@LovelyHelpfulStaffMember as Kim K showed at the met gala, Marilyn was thinner than most of today's celebrities.

Whoatealltheminieggs · 25/05/2022 12:56

You’re not imagining it. These days you have to be skinny or you have to have that cartoonish curvy body with a flat stomach.

Dinotour · 25/05/2022 12:56

Most clothes do look better or people who are slim to be honest- but yes there is a certain 'look' that is disheveled put together that absolutely has a certain aesthetic.

LovelyHelpfulStaffMember · 25/05/2022 12:56

People who have style don’t look dated, and I think the two are confused ..

LisaSimpson1984 · 25/05/2022 12:59

I am 5’3. I’m not even that bothered about fashion I just want to be able to wear a nice top and jeans without looking like a fat frump

standoctor · 25/05/2022 13:03

I think it is easier to look smart if you are slim.
I have put on weight for a few reasons in the last year or so.;
I recently went to buy a new suit.
Whatever I put on did not look smart.
That has prompted me to lose a stone in 4 weeks.

LisaSimpson1984 · 25/05/2022 13:05

How have you done that standoctor? I’ve been exercising and eating next to nothing and it’s not happening quickly at all

letsnotdothat · 25/05/2022 13:09

I think it’s maybe body type more than being skinny or not. You could line up size 8/10 women and they’d all look totally different because there’s such a vast array of body types and height affects things too. Generally models are tall with an athletic straight up, straight down body type.

LovelyHelpfulStaffMember · 25/05/2022 13:13

@Thatswhyimacat I’ve just read the Vogue article about the Met Gala. Oh! How interesting. I wouldn’t have thought that at all about MM.
