Fashion is just being skinny

So I've been thinking about this a lot and came across some social media posts of celebs in tracksuits / the Princess Diana long t shirt and bike shorts etc. and the comments are always 'fashion (some fire emoji or heart)' but it's not is it? It's just a skinny person in clothes that if a non-skinny person wore, would look like they made no effort?

I know people who aren't stick thin look good in certain outfits and that there are more interesting fashion choices (I love Self-Portrait and Reformation) but realistically, so many 'trends' only look good on thin people.

Is this all in my head?

OP posts:
SparkyBlue · 25/05/2022 13:22

I totally agree OP. I also think it's height. People with long shapely legs look bloody amazing in leggings whereas my legs look like sausages.

Portiasparty · 25/05/2022 13:32

I agree. It would take more effort to put together outfits designed for different shaped women. Obviously it's possible as I see women around that aren't particularly slim that look fantastic but it's not as easy. The annoying thing is though that we don't get to see these ideas often in magazines or on TV. So if you're slim, you're constantly given ideas of what to wear. If, like me, you've got a curvier look, it's trial and error.

For instance, I didn't understand for years why boxy tops or high necks or roll neck jumpers looked fantastic on slim, flat chested women but looked horrible on me. Trinny and Suzanna (for the mature woman who remembers them) got lots of abuse for being mean, but actually they were one of the first fashion platforms to show curvier women how to dress.

hmm it is just such a shame. I am a size 8-10 but have boobs/hips/bum and don't look good in big tops/tracksuit bottoms, I look like a frump. It's making keeping on trend hard...because all the skinny tall girls look stunning but I feel like I've been forced into thinking that way!

The power of the media.

Please do share any women who are fashionable despite not being a stick!

Are you actually serious? If your description is accurate. A size 8-10 with boobs and bum is the ideal body type. Nice of you to call others sticks. @notsoskinny

gunnersgold · 25/05/2022 13:39

I'm 5 foot and a curvy hourglass size 10..
I like clothes and work with what I have .. I'm always told I look nice . Yes being tall makes a lot of things look better but not always .

But not for fashion though. So, you take Sofia Vergara, for instance. I'm sure she's no more than a UK ten as she's very slender, but she's also extremely curvy for her frame and never wears high fashion as it wouldn't suit her shape.

It's just frustrating that fashion is designed for a very particular shape that many women don't have.

lenorofavenor · 25/05/2022 13:53

High fashion is an extremely niche market. I do t get why you be bothered by the 'stick' women anyway. Maybe I'm in another dimension, I don't get it, it's not real life.

sHREDDIES19 · 25/05/2022 14:13

Agreed. I'm slight build, size 6-8 although only 5ft 4 but I confess to being able to wear most clothes and they'll suit. There are exceptions though being this short as lots of dresses graze the floor! Off the rack clothes do tend to hang better off slim frames although everyone can look amazing in the right fit/colour/style.

NHSmummy84 · 25/05/2022 14:22

I’m a slim person, but I still feel ridiculous in most fashionable outfits. I think you should dress for your shape and just pick and choose the bits of fashion that you feel good in.
I’m not really a fan of the word “skinny”, it has negative connotations for me and many other slim people.

Maisa45 · 25/05/2022 14:24

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 25/05/2022 12:52

I'm a size 8 and look utterly ridiculous in lots of things, and if I haven't made an effort it shows, I look like a thin tramp!

Lol same. I think it's because I'm only 4'11 so I just look like a scruffy hobbit in certain trends ie shirt dresses that look great on taller people.

TheOriginalClownfish · 25/05/2022 14:39

When I was slim, a lot of clothes still looked shit on me because my shorter frame meant that they didn't fit me well either. And there's certain styles that I could never wear, even when thin - anything that requires a nice bosom for example.

I started to make my own clothes so that they'd fit me properly, especially for special occasions and I looked much better in things I'd made suited to my own figure.

ineedsun · 25/05/2022 14:41

Oh my god! Is that why people are wearing T-shirts and cycling shorts?

I don’t care what size you are, it’s a terrible look!

Eelicks · 25/05/2022 15:03

It's dressing for your figure too. I put all my weight on my stomach :( 😞 but have quite slim legs. I can only really wear loose tops and skinny trousers. Then I look quite smart. If I try wear wide leg trousers or slim fitting/crop tops I look awful! So I just keep it quite boring and stick to the same look rather than following trends.

But yes you're right skinny people can wear anything and it look great

ScattyHattie · 25/05/2022 16:53

T-shirts with cycling shorts were popular in late 80s/ 90s so guess it's part of that revival.
It's a preferable look to crop tops and tiny shorts with bum cheeks on show that were around summer or 2 ago.

phishy · 25/05/2022 17:25

Not all ‘skinny’ people do look good in clothes though, just as not all fat people look good. Two size 8 women can look very different to each other I’m the same outfit just as 2 size 18 women can look different.

Bone structure is important too.

BraveryBot9to5 · 25/05/2022 17:28

I agree, fatter or NOT slim women have to work so much harder at :dressing" but never get credit for it.

I think I’ve been living under a rock. That one passed me by too 😂

pictish · 25/05/2022 17:39

I’m a size 8/10 but have short, stumpy legs. I think having long limbs helps a lot.

theemmadilemma · 25/05/2022 18:28

Fizbosshoes · 25/05/2022 12:49

I would also add tall.
I am very short and although not overweight would look nothing like the image of people a foot taller.

Yes, I'm short and skinny. Not everything translates well on a short frame.

Siameasy · 25/05/2022 19:17

Yup-hence the classic supermodels. Look good in a bloody bin bag!

i don’t like the large bodied look and I also don’t like the sticking out fake bottoms

PicniKTime · 25/05/2022 19:22

You need to look at Manners London. Clothing suitable to lots of sizes. Mega comfy and so so well made. She was on Dragons den a few years ago.

I’ve got quite a few of their pieces. They use all sorts of model shapes and sizes.

HereIfYouNeedMe · 25/05/2022 20:15

I think it's all about mindset and what you expose yourself to online. If you follow people on social media who have a similar body shape as you it really helps to appreciate what you have to work with and to block out the unrealistic media hypes. I know it's worked for me anyway

notsoskinny · 25/05/2022 21:11

I would love to know who to follow if anyone has tips.

even Sofia Vulgara example is annoying because she has a stunning body shape and looks amazing - very unrealistic to the lay man imo.

@lenorofavenor I don’t have the ideal body type because I don’t have a flat stomach, never have at any weight. Very clear genetics as I have the exact same body shape, albeit a smaller version, of my size 16 mum.

I will not change my term stick. The term curve is accepted and in my opinion it describes a body type. I can use beam pole if you prefer.

I still think thin people, regardless of height, look good in anything 😭 maybe not “fashionable and on trend” but I’d still think they look good. Even plain jeans and a white tee - they look effortless. Or at least my mind has been convinced into thinking that.

OP posts:
kateandme · 25/05/2022 21:18

But it's only because it's been drummed into us that thin equals health and thinner equals prettier etc.we weren't born thinking this we've been trained to.diwt cultùre,disordered eating being normalised.media, models it's all manipulated our thoughts.what made u think the larger is bad compared?it stemmed from somewhere.from how we are made to feel about our bodies.from a culture that forces the thin ideal.

It’s not just about being slim though, it’s about proportions. I’m slim but very short, I have hips and thighs but no boobs to balance me out so manage neither skinny nor curvy which means a lot of clothes just don’t look right on me or fit properly.
