Fashion is just being skinny

notsoskinny · 25/05/2022 12:30

So I've been thinking about this a lot and came across some social media posts of celebs in tracksuits / the Princess Diana long t shirt and bike shorts etc. and the comments are always 'fashion (some fire emoji or heart)' but it's not is it? It's just a skinny person in clothes that if a non-skinny person wore, would look like they made no effort?

I know people who aren't stick thin look good in certain outfits and that there are more interesting fashion choices (I love Self-Portrait and Reformation) but realistically, so many 'trends' only look good on thin people.

Is this all in my head?

It's true, and I would give a lot to be tall and slim. I used to be slim in my twenties, even thirties and forties, and now I'm approaching 70, I'm short and fat, and I look like a potato sack tied in the middle, no matter what I wear.
Oh well.

TruthHertz · 25/05/2022 21:43

Someone like Marilyn Monroe who was generally accepted to be beautiful would not suit or fit into 90% of Fashion.

You think?

She was apparently about size 6-8 in today's UK sizes.

DashboardConfessional · 25/05/2022 21:46

It's definitely partly in the eye of the (socially conditioned) beholder. Somehow, a long black dress, leather jacket and DMs on an AllSaints model page looks like an outfit but if I wore it at my recent 5ft3 12 stone frame it looked like some sort of statement or costume. "Off to a gig of a band I liked in the 90s".

I've lost 13lbs and it looks "right" again at a size 10.

kateandme · 25/05/2022 21:18

But it's only because it's been drummed into us that thin equals health and thinner equals prettier etc.we weren't born thinking this we've been trained to.diwt cultùre,disordered eating being normalised.media, models it's all manipulated our thoughts.what made u think the larger is bad compared?it stemmed from somewhere.from how we are made to feel about our bodies.from a culture that forces the thin ideal.

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. What we perceive as 'beauty' is apparently just good genes - the more symmetrical the more beautiful. This is basically just a mechanism for finding a healthier mate.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's innate not to fancy a chubby.

RobertaFirmino · 25/05/2022 21:52

Stick here. I look absolutely fucking terrible in all the trends. Am a lanky fucker.

Stickism isn't an automatic passport to looking good. You generally need the right make-up, the right light and a decent photographer. This is why all the models look beautiful. You need smoke and mirrors whatever your size.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 25/05/2022 21:52

I agree. The floral frilly baggy long dress trend looks great if you are tall and skinny and young but if you're not all those things you just look like a frump

mistermagpie · 25/05/2022 21:56

I do actually think there's some truth in this.

I'm 5'8 and quite slim with a sort of 'in proportion' build. I am an incredibly scruffy dresser - ripped jeans, trainers and a £2.50 t-shirt from primark kind of thing. I buy almost all my clothes second hand. But I can sort of 'get away' with it because I have a very easy figure to dress and most things look pretty good, even if the clothes themselves are a bit shit. I don't tend to struggle to find things to fit or something to look nice if I need a fancier outfit for something.

I'm not bragging and its not all luck, I watch what I eat and exercise, but some of it it obviously genetic. I'm not pretty either by the way, and I think if you have a pretty face you will always look better than someone who is just tall and thin, but you can't have everything!

Nothappyatwork · 25/05/2022 21:57

I totally agree with you OP I look back to the time when I was most attractive in my life and the only thing difference between then and now is I was a size 10 now I look like a bag of spanners. Apparently I’m a size 12 I don’t really believe that I think I’m a 14 and old money.

and whenever they do these threats on how do I look expensive the common denominator is she is stick thin

TruthHertz · 25/05/2022 21:59

That should've been 'a chubby person' not 'a chubby' in my last post!

It's not just skinnyness it is also age. A lot of current fashion looks cute on the young whatever their body shape (the whole geeky sportswear thing; cropped tops, super baggy shirts, cut out dresses) but is a no go for over 40s.

Ohilovetorave · 25/05/2022 22:19

Eat some chips

Don't be so obtuse

I agree with this, I am also skinny and I look hideous in a lot of outfits that look amazing online or on the hanger

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 25/05/2022 12:52

I'm a size 8 and look utterly ridiculous in lots of things, and if I haven't made an effort it shows, I look like a thin tramp!

Me too. I’m slim (size 6) and a lot of the current trends don’t look good on me at all. I think it’s more about proportions - length of leg etc.

I look crap in bootcut jeans for example (back in), and I always think I’ll look cute and elf-like in oversized things but I just look like I’ve got my dad’s jacket on.

Models have particular proportions, which is why when you see them in real life they can look a bit odd. It’s not just about being skinny. Most of them probably weigh more than me!

Lovinglife45 · 25/05/2022 22:22

I think you can get away with wearing cheaper clothes when slimmer. I maintain a size 10 as I cannot afford to spend £100 to £150 on each garment. I wear floaty skirts (fitted at waist) and long sleeve floaty dresses (again fitted at waist). I avoid maxi lengths as I feel displaying my slim ankles helps me look more slender.

I have long limbs which gives the impression I am taller and slimmer than I actually am.

What the actual?!

Goldenbear · 25/05/2022 22:39

Isn't it about general beauty as well. I am thinking anecdotally here but the person I know who looks amazing in most things is slim but not very slim. It is more they have a great figure, skin is amazing, they carry off an unusual hairstyle, big eyes and smile and radiate health really. I've never seem them look shit in anything even when they are depressed.

IrisVersicolor · 25/05/2022 22:53

I’m a sticky thing with big boobs and shoulders - things don’t automatically look great on me I can assure you. I have to dress very carefully to flatter my figure.

The only plus about being very slim is that cheap clothes tend to hang better. When I’ve been bigger I had to be more picky about better fitting, better quality clothes.

easyday · 25/05/2022 22:59

Yep. I've been on Pinterest trying to find motivational pics of women in outfits I'd like to wear when I shed some weight. I've come to the realisation that if you are slim you look good in just about anything.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 25/05/2022 23:12

Well to me YABU. I am 'super skinny' (not a fan of the term) and everything looks shit on me. I have stick legs and no bum so almost all trousers hang around my bum. Yes, a slim figure can look great but that's subjective.

Maybe some degree of 'the grass is always greener'.

Notbluepeter · 25/05/2022 23:16

I agree, an example is instagram.com/kateehutchins?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
Her style consists of loads of basic t-shirts and trousers. But being a size 6 she looks like an effortless beauty. Whereas in the same combo i look like I'm dressed to walk the dog 😂

Josette77 · 26/05/2022 02:41

I'm thin but with boobs and hips and an ass. I used to be very thin and boyish..I love fashion and I think I pull off things because I feel great in them. I think confidence goes a long way.
I'm more Marilyn than Audrey now, but I think feeling good and smiling trumps all.

IDreamOfTheMoors · 26/05/2022 03:47

I’m skinny, @notsoskinny.
I’ve got no arse, no breasts, no stomach, and my face looks 20 years older than what I am.

And even though I can wear just about anything, it all looks shit because there’s literally not one curve on my body anywhere. The novelty of “wearing just about anything” wore off about a thousand years ago. Even my tiniest bra cups are indented. It’s awful.

I hate it. It isn’t attractive, it isn’t flattering and it isn’t fun. What it is, is embarrassing. And if you take a real close look at those skinny models, they look just like me. They’re just taller.

I’m 5’4”, and I weigh between 7 & 7.5 stone. I wear size UK 6, or US 2. And those “cute little skinny jeans?” They bag something awful.

I’ve been skinny most of my life.

I understand, only on the opposite end. Surely there’s a happy medium in there somewhere. I just wanted you to know that “skinny” isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. Maybe someday the scientists will invent a safe way for people to achieve their ideal weight in a short amount of time.

Until then, we all need to stick together.❤️

She was apparently about size 6-8 in today's UK sizes.

Yes MM was slim but she was also curvy and not especially tall. Those things tend to mean tailoring is more important. She was very good at wearing clothes that suited her/ had excellent stylists.

A very slim, tall and angular woman can often pull off quite shapeless garments (that require very little work for the creators!)

Alas, I always forget that I look nothing like the model when I go to buy clothes.

notsoskinny · 26/05/2022 18:23

hmmm very interesting and thank you everyone for your opinions. I completely understand skinny doesn’t auto mean you’re a model but in general, clothes just look alright from my experience if slim. As soon as you put the same outfit on a bigger person / curvier person I think it look awful.

also same with boobs, I know they’re desired in culture but only along with being very skinny. If I wear any type of baggy top then I look awful because of my boobs.

it just feels like mainstream trends and fashion is for slim and young girls

my colleague is an influencer on the side and she posted a pic in a white crop and mom jeans. Nothing special. She looks great. Lots of likes. She’s 5’3/4 and slim. Put that on a size 12 and you will be like “ooo is that bit meant to bulge”
