Ok contacted another rescue and they said it needs to be taken in, so I will get it to them tomorrow. It will overnight in my cat carrier in a large cupboard in my kitchen.

Last November I took a 300g one to rescue and 5 weeks later they sent it back to me at over 800g. She was so feisty when we took her in, when we picked her up she was even worse! This one is real timid though, so I suspect she won’t be back to me until early next year.

I’ve got loads of big ones visiting, but we tend to get lungworm ones, so I’m forever taking big ones to rescue for treatment.

WitchyOsmansXraySpectre · 04/11/2022 20:40

Lilyjfree so glad the other rescue took it in. There's no way it could've got that weight up before the end of November was there?!

We've still not seen any hedgehogs around our way but there was a badger in the garden the other day!!! Bit odd as we're in the middle of quite a busy town!

Halstead · 04/11/2022 20:59

Thank you @Lilyjfree - I was a bit worried.

So glad the other rescue has taken it in.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 05/11/2022 14:02

"A hedgehog highway is a series of holes in fences and walls that allow hedgehogs to pass freely between gardens, parks and allotments. Hedgehog highways allow hogs to move around without having to use human roads, which can be very dangerous for them."

Source 'hamworthhedgehogrescue.'

We have a bunch of little gaps 4-5" high, and 4-5" wide in our hedges, and fences, so the wee hedgehogs can get through to the garden at the side of us, and the garden at the back, and the little field at the side. If you have solid fences (especially the ones in concrete IYSWIM) they can't pass through.

Hahaha! That’s a brilliant image @AgathaMystery! That really made me smile 😊 🦔🦔 🦔

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 11/11/2022 17:53

i love looking at these wildlife photos

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 13/11/2022 08:59

Oh they are beautiful photos. The baby Echidna is sooooooo cute 🥰

megletthesecond · 13/11/2022 09:05

I've had a hedgehog highway for 18 months and they do use it. Due to the brick walls on two sides of the garden I was left with hardly any space to fit one in but they have found it and come visiting. I've got the little sign up too.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 13/11/2022 17:08

that’s fab @megletthesecond . Whenever anyone posted good news like that @Pricklesinperil would always ask them to update this map

AgathaMystery · 13/11/2022 23:38

Sad news here. Our smallest hog has died, he was killed by a car on our very very quiet back lane. I wondered why I hadn’t seen him for a couple of weeks and now I know why 😢

Big Hog is still coming - he ate his tea last night & I can hear him outside now. Shouldn’t he be hibernating any day now? How long do we leave food out for…?

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 14/11/2022 06:44

That is so sad @AgathaMystery. I looked on hedgehog street for your hibernation question. It says that in mild winters, hedgehogs remain active through Nov and Dec, so keep leaving out food and water

Hibernation

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 14/11/2022 11:47

This just came in from the RSPB

MrsMAgain · 14/11/2022 17:03

Eckno · 26/10/2022 09:09

MrsMAgain I picked up a bag of the Tesco 12kg bird food. Such great value. Thanks for this!

How are you and your birds finding the seed,@Eckno ? I've just reordered but see that very recent reviews aren't so good, so perhaps they've changed the supplier or the mix.

I thought I had a spare sack but it turns out it was cat litter, so our birds are existing on Waitrose Essentials Fruit and Nut Muesli in the meantime! They all seem to approve, especially our male robin. A bit of an expensive way to do it though - glad it's only for a couple of days!

MrsMAgain · 14/11/2022 17:19

Thanks to pps for posting all the links with information and photos, and well done to pps who are helping their local 🦔 and other wildlife as we head through Autumn and towards Winter!

So sorry to hear the sad news about your little hedgepig, @AgathaMystery and yes, keep feeding and watering your biggy for now. It's been mild so far, but that might be about to change, depending on where you are.

Thinking of you,@Pricklesinperil Flowers

RichardOsmansXraySpecs · 16/11/2022 20:51

That’s so sad @AgathaMystery, I’ve said it before but the only hedgehogs I ever see are dead ones that have been run over. I wish there was more we could do to stop it happening 😢

DowningStreetParty · 17/11/2022 21:33

Drat! I missed the webinar. Anyone get any good hedgehog care tips? I guess it will be put up on the Hedgehog Street YouTube channel where they’ve put their previous ones. 🦔
