Hello Fresh and portion sizes

Aibu to think they're small, especially for the price? Had a chicken and mushroom hot pot yesterday and it came with one fist sized baking potato to be shared between two people. Doing burgers tonight and the patties are going to be around 100g each which seems small!

We are a family of 4 but the kids don't eat an adult sized portion (I don't really either), when we had Gusto there was always left overs for dp to take for lunch the next day but with Hello Fresh there never was. We went back to Gusto after a month, as well as the small portions I found Hello Fresh really basic with limited choices.

purplesequins · 22/05/2022 15:41

I think we have lost sight of sensible portions.
a main meal should be around 500-600 kcal but it's very easy to dish up 1000 or more. especially if a meal is carb heavy with creamy sauces.

luxxlisbon · 22/05/2022 15:43

I don’t think 100g for a burger is particularly small, it’s basically a quarter pounder which is a typical portion.

Idhatetolookintothoseeyes · 22/05/2022 15:45

That hot pot was 707 calories so it would be hugely calorific if it was any bigger.

this burger meal of theirs is 949 calories! (Although for 2 the meat is 220g each?)I think you could pick something up from the supermarket that wouldn’t take 40 mins to prepare and would be less calorific tbh.

I just add more veg/salad to bulk it out. Gives more volume without adding loads of calories

See I found the opposite, we're a family of 2 adults plus one pre-schooler. With HelloFresh there's always enough to give DS a small portion of what we're having, but with Gousto there was always barely enough to feed DH and I, so if we gave some to DS too I'd have to fill out the meals with extra veg.

If you find HelloFresh portions on the small side, definitely wouldn't recommend GreenChef, which is their "healthier" sister company. Their portions are absolutely tiny!

SheWoreYellow · 22/05/2022 15:49

I suppose it depends how active you are and what else you eat in a day. Some of their burger meals are 800 calories, which would be about right for me, but I’m quite active and aim for about 2000 calories a day.

Rainbowshit · 22/05/2022 15:50

Is always thought hello fresh portions were massive whereas gousto was just right. Getting a green chef box just now and find them a bit small.

user1471517095 · 22/05/2022 15:52

I cancelled my Hello Fresh after receiving a Duck meal. Once I'd taken the skin and fat off my piece (cos I don't like the skin) my portion weighed a mighty 25g. I did email them but they never even acknowledged it.

Snoken · 22/05/2022 15:53

Ehm, no, a 100g burger is not small
at all, and exceeds the amount of red meat we are supposed to eat daily by 30g. I think, like somebody else has said, that we have lost sight of portion size. Pretty much all of their meals contain more calories than what is recommended, if you take into consideration that it is only 1 out of 3 meals per day.

Hugasauras · 22/05/2022 15:54

Yes, similar to @GiltEdges, we always had enough for two and toddler DD when we did it. And we are def not small portion people!

crumpet · 22/05/2022 15:59

We had a few hello fresh boxes, and the portion sizes seemed fine. Don’t remember ever thinking they were too small

MadameMinimes · 22/05/2022 16:01

We’re two people with healthy sized appetites, we’re not left with lots of leftovers but we are both full at the end of a meal. I think the portions are generally pretty generous, but it does depend on the meal. The pasta dish I had yesterday was 1,000 calories per portion, and felt like a very generous meal. Some of the other dishes in my box this week are in the 400-450 calorie range and will probably feel less generous.

HeArInGhandsgirl11 · 22/05/2022 16:05

I stopped getting hello fresh for this reason, never enough in them

TwoCoffeesPlease · 22/05/2022 16:06

I agree they are pretty meagre. We only had it once because I had a free box through a voucher and we both felt we hadn’t had enough food

Choccyp1g · 22/05/2022 16:08

We had Gousto for a while recently, and I felt that they were building up the calories in the meal by adding cream cheese, yogurt or flavoured oil, while the meat or fish portions were quite small and often there was only one or two of your 5-a-day. And you we often had to pay extra for the salmon or chicken recipes.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 22/05/2022 16:08

Family of five here with fairly big appetites and we found that ordering for a family of four stretched comfortably around 5

MacaroniBaloney · 22/05/2022 16:09

I was worried they would be too small, but generally feed us well. But no seconds 😕

That fact is helping me loose weight as I'd always go back gor seconds!

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/05/2022 16:10

We’re 2 adults and 2 teenage boys. We ended up reducing the Hello Fresh order from 4 portions to 3 portions because 4 was too much. Maybe it depends on the meals you pick?

Zombiemum1946 · 22/05/2022 16:13

We generally found the portion sizes fine. We only stopped because we went low carb.

BrieAndChilli · 22/05/2022 16:15

We had that hot pot the other day. 5 of us including 3 kids age 11-15. Was plenty for us and I think there was a small portion left over for DH lunch the next day. I do often add some more veg on the side but that’s to add more veg rather than the original meal being too small.

xxxemzyxxx · 22/05/2022 16:37

We just started ordering from Hello Fresh a few weeks ago and find the portion sizes pretty spot on. We order for two people but a small portion goes to our toddler. We feel it's enough without over doing it

SnackSizeRaisin · 22/05/2022 16:40

The veg portions were small. 1 tiny carrot between 2. But found the overall size ok. Not always enough for my husband but he has an active job

Seraphinesupport · 22/05/2022 16:42

i think thr portion sizes are a little small but not completely and fed me and husband but only just about and i dont eat a lot

Hallefuckinglujah · 22/05/2022 16:42

We get the two person / four meals option and majority of them, including that hot pot has been enough for two adults a teen girl, sometimes we bulk it out with a garlic bread if it doesn't look much but for the most part, the portion sizes have been generous and I say that as someone who needs to lose some weight. My husband did initially think it didn't look much but it's because he would use more ingredients so it wouldn't be wasted instead if a bit later portion amount, so like that hot pot, if we had three potato's in, he'd use three instead of the required just one. Or like if there was a pack of sausages and the recipe says four, he'd use all six instead of freezing two. So his portion sizes were always bigger than they should be.
