Hello Fresh and portion sizes

Aibu to think they're small, especially for the price? Had a chicken and mushroom hot pot yesterday and it came with one fist sized baking potato to be shared between two people. Doing burgers tonight and the patties are going to be around 100g each which seems small!

No normal person only eats half a jacket potato unless they're either a) on a diet or b) a competitive under eater.

If that's about the OPs recipe and the mention of a potato being between two people. It's a topping and not the main part of a meal like a jacket potato is.

The attached photo is a one person portion of that exact meal in the OP, I think it's enough potato, I'm not an underwater at all, over eater if anything. Do you really think the people who are saying the portion size of the hotpot attached it fine must be competitive under eaters or dieters because one potato is enough for the recipe?

We use Hello Fresh and find that the portions are a good size. Sometimes we add a bit of extra veg in to fill it out enough to share a small portion with our 18mo if the meal is suitable. The regular meals are all around 700 - 900 calories-ish if I remember right. Which seems reasonable to me.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/05/2022 18:47

Kool4katz · 22/05/2022 18:39

Jeez. Another competitive under-eater. What a load of silly nonsense! 🤣

An adult woman needs an average of 2000cals a day and a man needs 2500.
If your main meal is only 500 cals, then you’re going to be eating less than 1000 calories a day in total, which is very unhealthy.

Even on a strict diet, you shouldn’t drop to below 1400cals a day.

How do you work that out?

Maybe people eating Hello Fresh 500 calorie dinners eat more earlier in the day?

Because let's face it, most people in the UK aren't restricting themselves to 1500 calories a day are they?

myuterusistryingtokillme · 22/05/2022 18:47

We have 3 meals for two of us each week, and there is always food left. So I was expecting you to say portion sizes were huge, maybe it depends on what you order?

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/05/2022 16:10

We’re 2 adults and 2 teenage boys. We ended up reducing the Hello Fresh order from 4 portions to 3 portions because 4 was too much. Maybe it depends on the meals you pick?

Us too.
The meals for 4 always have one portion left over for the freezer.
I actually find the portions far too big. We're not even a skinny family!

ThinWomansBrain · 22/05/2022 18:51

I use simply cook occasionally - you get the spices.seasonings and add your own protein & veg, so you can suit yourself how big/small you make the dish.
I usually add enough to make three portions, and freeze one or two of them.

Because I am cooking just for me, it suits me - I don't end up rushing to use the meals up if I skip a meal or eat out, and that probably happens more with one person than a family.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 22/05/2022 18:52

So many sweeping statements here. If I ate 2000 calories a day I’d be 100kg. I am over 40 and have hypothyroid. I can eat MAX 1500 to maintain my weight despise strength training 3 times a week and getting 11k steps a day.

We use Hello Fresh and often have leftovers. I sometimes look at the ingredients and think it looks meagre until it’s all on the plate. If I didn’t measure and track everything I’d be obese.

worriedaboutmoney2022 · 22/05/2022 18:53

I've had bad experiences with these meal boxes and my friend who lives on her own says hello fresh meal for 2 is only a meal for 1
1 chicken breast and 1 potatoe for 2 adults etc
So stingy
I've not bothered with any of it anymore I did a free weeks trial of hello fresh I'm pleased it was free

QuestionableMouse · 22/05/2022 18:54

Not the best pic, but here's yesterday's. It's on a IKEA side plate for context. Added the same plate with a fork for context! It's with an extra potato too.

Also added tonight's, which seemed to make loads. (the mushrooms I had in and wanted to use up, and yes, I know the gravy is meant to be on the sausage but I'm not a huge fan of red wine sauces so wanted it on the side.)

As someone who does weigh almost 100kg, no, you really wouldn’t weigh that much.

The baking potato was the size of a lemon! Seemed really small so I added another similar sized potato and it made a satisfying amount for two people.

If you'd said the baking potato was abnormally small you'd have had much different responses, if people will be assuming it's four times bigger than what you had. id go on live chat and report a problem with an ingredient and they'll usually refund or add credit for the cost of that ingredient and sometimes extra for the inconvenience of going to shops to buy the correct amount/size .

QuestionableMouse · 22/05/2022 18:55

Adding a pic to show the difference in plate sizes too!

I always ordered the veggie meals from them but found a meal for two easily stretched to three when our dd was home. Never ordered the meat or fish though.
Used them for about 8 months but stopped because the veggie meals became repetitive

The third picture looks tiny.

You have a medical condition. Not sure what that has to do with the thread.

It's like me going onto a thread about your favourite way of cooking lobster and declaring I'm allergic to it.

What is the relevance?

QuestionableMouse · 22/05/2022 18:59

Also forgot to say I got the two portion box. So three meals for two people.

It was one dish split between three people, and it was also on a much bigger plate 😁

Is that one sausage in the picture? Surely that's not the whole portion?

Does the recipe not give a clue of the weight of food needed, eg 400 g of potato?

I read about so many problems with these recipe boxes that I don't see the point.

People often still have to go to the supermarket if ingredients are missing or too small and it seems like you're paying a premium price for quite basic ingredients.

mast0650 · 22/05/2022 19:02

I only used them briefly as I really didn't like them. But I found the portions to be large.

The meal came with four sausages. I'm not overly keen on them so only had one, while my parents had one and a half each. So if it was split between two, it'd be two each which seems more reasonable.

Maybe that bloody potato yesterday was a red herring!

I used to be obese. I was actually 120kg so yeah I would be obese eating more than that.

I don’t know why you think you know my body.

PollysPockets · 22/05/2022 19:04

I find them fine in terms of meat etc but I would prefer more veg to bulk out the portions and I found the veg element a bit stingy. If I was to get them again I would have to add extra veg which is a bit of a pain

Oh I see that was a bit misleading then and I was about to say that was a ridiculous portion 1 sausage! It looks very pink mind.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 22/05/2022 19:06

We always found a HelloFresh made 3 portions; we'd each have one and put one in the fridge for the next day.

You bake them, which I've never done. It temped fine (over 74c) so was definitely cooked! 😂
