Hello Fresh and portion sizes

Aibu to think they're small, especially for the price? Had a chicken and mushroom hot pot yesterday and it came with one fist sized baking potato to be shared between two people. Doing burgers tonight and the patties are going to be around 100g each which seems small!

We sometimes add a little extra rice or pasta but otherwise find the portions perfectly fine.

Chihuahuapower · 22/05/2022 17:53

They feel small, but they are a sensible portion... which means you are usually over eating.

Thats exactly what happened with us. We got used to the 'small' portions really quickly and we lost loads of weight. We were probably in the best shape of our adult lives.

We stopped doing it when we went on holiday and never started up again.

Yes, we are back to being fat 😂

No normal person only eats half a jacket potato unless they're either a) on a diet or b) a competitive under eater.

Surely it depends whats in the hotpot and how big the portion of that is? I've made a stew for tonight and will have that with half a baked potato, because I want more stew and I like extra butter in my potato. Its about balance rather than blindly putting extra on your plate.

FirewomanSam · 22/05/2022 17:57

Husband and I are really hearty eaters and I often find portion sizes too small in things like this, but I can honestly say we generally find HelloFresh portions huge! Sometimes the quantities can look small at first glance (like when they give you a couple of tiny potatoes or a teeny pack of meat) but I usually find that once you put it all together the resulting meal ends up being a really decent portion.

Ehm, no, a 100g burger is not small
at all, and exceeds the amount of red meat we are supposed to eat daily by 30g. I think, like somebody else has said, that we have lost sight of portion size. Pretty much all of their meals contain more calories than what is recommended, if you take into consideration that it is only 1 out of 3 meals per day.

But we're also supposed to limit it to three portions or less a week, which means you can actually have more than 70g in a day... weekly portion is more like 350g-500g

a main meal should be around 500-600 kcal but it's very easy to dish up 1000 or more. especially if a meal is carb heavy with creamy sauces.

Yes we have. I mean an average pizza you buy from the shop is actually two portions. How many of us scoff the whole thing? raises hand It's a part of why most adults are now over weight.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/05/2022 18:05

I did it for a month and stopped- portion size was fine , a bit on the small side maybe-but my H suddenly didn't fancy what that days meal was and I ended up wasting stuff qUite often. I also don't find it that hard to cook and pick up stuff in the day.

Idhatetolookintothoseeyes · 22/05/2022 18:06

AND a size 8 today was a size 14 in 1980

I missed that post but I was looking to buy a vintage dressmaking pattern off eBay recently and there was a photo of the pack that listed the size measurements. It is indeed true!

I've done hello fresh and gousto for nearly 2 years, never found them small ever. Always a good portion. I think we usually just have too large a portions as a culture

The thing is if you only eat one or two meals a day with nothing in between except milk in tea and coffee ( as I do 5-6 times a week ) 600 cal meals are quite stingy . If you have breakfast, lunch and dinner and 1-2 snacks of course that is different

Surely it depends what you’re eating with it? I’m a big eater. If I was having a jacket potato for dinner, it would be a whole jacket potato.
If I was having hotpot for dinner with a jacket potato as a side, I’d have half a jacket potato.

Yeah but Hello Fresh aren’t really catering for that, are they? They’re assuming it’s one of your standard 3 meals a day.

I've got a 1980s size 14 skirt in my wardrobe. Will take a look. I've never been an 8 in my life so I think that's unlikely. 10-12 I'd agree

AnGofsMum · 22/05/2022 18:19

I find the portion sizes a bit small but have always thought it’s because I’ve been eating too much and these are actually normal portion sizes!

ancientgran · 22/05/2022 18:22

I've been using Gousto recently and I think it varies with the meal. We've had meals for 2 that fed 3 of us and we've had meals for 2 that weren't enough for 2. I was thinking of trying Hello Fresh for a change.

Clymene · 22/05/2022 18:24

But also, my children and my siblings children are all huge. They're not remotely fat but the adult children are all 6 foot plus. People are bigger.

My teens are both nearly 6 ft. I can't get clothes to fit my son because he is - to use a vulgar expression - like a long streak of piss. But generally when people are taller, they are bigger too.

Depends on the size of the potato as well and potatoes do vary.

Simonjt · 22/05/2022 18:30

We find them small as well (same issue with gusto), we had one where you were allocated half a sweet potato each, the sweet potato was the main part of the meal.

The five a day rating is also wrong, to be a portion it needs to be at least 80g, where as you will have the smallest skinniest spring onion between three and it is considered one of your five a day on the recipe.

We once had a walnut salad, the meal for three included six whole walnuts!!!!

pinkchampagne1 · 22/05/2022 18:32

We have had both Hello Fresh and Gousto. I found HF often sent tiny portions of meat or fish and we had the smallest spring onion we had ever seen in our last box!

Try Gousto. I find them much better quality and I like that you can pause your subscription so you aren’t tied into a subscription if you don’t want to be. You can just order one off boxes when you fancy. I much prefer them to Hello Fresh.
If you fancy giving them a go, my referral code will give you 65% off your first box and 30% off any ordered in the first month. 😊cook.gousto.co.uk/raf?promo_code=NICOL274409&utm_source=iosapp

gunnersgold · 22/05/2022 18:37

I think they are big , we have the meals for 2 between 2 adults and a child .
Are you getting the right amount? Hello fresh is 2/3or 4

Jeez. Another competitive under-eater. What a load of silly nonsense! 🤣

An adult woman needs an average of 2000cals a day and a man needs 2500.
If your main meal is only 500 cals, then you’re going to be eating less than 1000 calories a day in total, which is very unhealthy.

Even on a strict diet, you shouldn’t drop to below 1400cals a day.

You only eat 1,500 calories a day?!

QuestionableMouse · 22/05/2022 18:42

Just cooked the second one and I'm confused now as it easily fed three of us! (honey mustard sausages with potato gratin.)

I'm not terribly concerned about the calories in each meal as I don't eat lunch and only have a light breakfast so it's my main meal of the day.

Think I need to look at lighter options because both so far have been very rich and it's not something I'd enjoy on a regular basis.

We got the meals for two which happily fed three adults so I don’t feel they where small at all

QuestionableMouse · 22/05/2022 18:44

The baking potato was the size of a lemon! Seemed really small so I added another similar sized potato and it made a satisfying amount for two people.

purplesequins · 22/05/2022 18:45

no. but I'm not just eating one portion of main meal. plus sometimes dessert plus snacks & drinks it's easy to get to over 2000
