Hello Fresh and portion sizes

Aibu to think they're small, especially for the price? Had a chicken and mushroom hot pot yesterday and it came with one fist sized baking potato to be shared between two people. Doing burgers tonight and the patties are going to be around 100g each which seems small!

I found the portion sizes really variable between the dishes in Hello Fresh. E.g. some of them I'd struggle to finish and others I would need to bulk out with additional ingredients.

That's what I've found so far! Yesterday's seemed on the smaller side while tonight's felt like there was loads.

The meal came with four sausages. I'm not overly keen on them so only had one, while my parents had one and a half each. So if it was split between two, it'd be two each which seems more reasonable.

Maybe that bloody potato yesterday was a red herring!

Four sausages doesn't seem like a lot for two adults. Every adult I know would have a minimum of three sausages (and I know quite a few who'd have more!). But I think three is quite a decent portion for an adult without stuffing your face. I don't know any adult in either my own family or when I've eaten with friends who'd only serve up two sausages for an adult.

That just backs up my experience that the portion sizes on this boxes is very small. We'd quite often have to buy three portions just to get two decent adult portions. And then that would mean that we had too much of some things (usually carbs like rice etc but also fish - fish seemed to be the only protein where they gave a decent portion).

I love the convenience of these boxes but the portions they provide are on the mean side - or at least they are for the meals we've picked and our appetites. And I would say that I like a decent sized meal but don't like anything too huge, so it's not as if I'm stuffing myself or loading up my plate.

I get Gousto (did have hello fresh but prefer Gousto) and the portions are the right ones, some are actually quite large (depending on meal) I loose a little weight on them which I need to do

GrumpyTerrier · 22/05/2022 19:28

They've got smaller. I used to do Hello Fresh all the time but recently they are not only smaller portions but they're worse quality ingredients and so much packaging.

myuterusistryingtokillme · 22/05/2022 19:41

So you got a two portion box, and split it between 3 people? Well of course you'll think the portion is small, you have one too many people eating it 🤔

You have a medical condition. Not sure what that has to do with the thread.

It's like me going onto a thread about your favourite way of cooking lobster and declaring I'm allergic to it.

What is the relevance?

Errrr the whole discussion about portion sizes and what is normal for one person isn’t normal for another?

Enjoyallthewine · 22/05/2022 19:49

I found the Hello Fresh portion sizes just right. We really enjoyed it.

Today I did yes, but not yesterday.

@LadyCampanulaTottington - most people don't have your thyroid issue.

Most people can also eat shellfish without puking lavishly like I do. Just as I don't go onto threads asking for your favourite lobster recipe and complain that I can't eat it because I'm allergic, you going onto threads about normal amounts of calories and saying you can't eat that is equally irrelevant.

The average calorie consumption for adult women is about 2,000 calories. Some women can eat more, some less, to maintain their weight. Most of us know by the time we get to our 40s.

NursieBernard · 22/05/2022 20:01

I found the portion sizes generous and always had leftovers for lunch the next day.

TwittleBee · 22/05/2022 20:08

We find them large, for a 2 person meal I feed me, DH and 2DS (aged 4 and 2)

That was exactly my point, I don’t know why you felt the need to repeat it.

I find it varies quite a lot between dishes, but although some are smaller portions I don't they're unreasonably small. If anything, it's a lesson in portion control! And sometimes the meat provided looks smallish but is actually fine, again shows that our views of what an adequate protein portion is have got a bit out of whack IMO.

And some I find are actually way too much - the Mexican dirty rice (which I love) for 2 is really plenty for three people.

SkankingWombat · 22/05/2022 21:52

We used to buy the 4 person box for me (physical job and a tendency to skip lunch as too busy), DH (gym bunny but otherwise sedentary) and 2DCs (5 and 7yo but very active and very very hungry! They usually eat 2/3s of an adult portion). As others have said, the portions varied between recipes. We found some were just right, some left a bit but not enough to make a lunch-for-1 from, and others could have easily fed another adult. Some meals looked very stingy when plated, bit were actually surprising filling (to 'no longer hungry' rather than 'stuffed' levels) once eaten. IMO they wouldn't have fed the equivalent of 2 of me and 2 DHs most of the time, but between us adults eating a little over our alloted portion and DCs eating a little under theirs, it was never not enough and worked out well.

Mulhollandmagoo · 22/05/2022 22:32

We found the portion sizes ok, we would get the 2 person box that would feed 2 adults and a toddler ok, but we stopped as we were consistently getting veg that was past it's best.

QuestionableMouse · 23/05/2022 02:22

The veg has been fine so far but I'm confused by the slightly random portion sizes!

Just ordered another box so will hopefully get a better idea!

I get the two person meals and its enough for me and my DP. We often have a small amount of leftovers
