To hate barbeques

Stuckandinamess · 22/05/2022 13:24

Just that. I hate them with an absolute passion. Don't like the taste of BBQ foods, can't be bothered with all the prep Nd carting stuff in and out of the house when I have a perfectly good kitchen and dining table. DH has invited friends for BBQ today. Currently grey skies , 15 degrees and not in my opinion a nice day for outdoors cooking and eating. I pointed this out and he said well we can eat it inside then- what is the bloody point??? I'm going on strike and he can do the lot.
Did I mention that he has been out all day with friends and I have been cleaning and laundry /ironing for two hours? I'm hitting the gin and leaving him to it!!

I like bbq'd chicken and veg, so for me it's worth the effort. If he wants a BBQ, then he does the grunt work.

Merryclaire · 22/05/2022 13:27

I love a BBQ. But I hate that the men take all the credit for cooking (ie flipping some meat), when the women have (usually) done all the shopping, meat prep, salad, sides etc. I know that’s all very stereotypical but always seems to be the case!

dolphinsarentcommon · 22/05/2022 13:29

I hate them. I also hate my neighbours having them. So many sunny afternoons spoilt by the smell of lighter fluid followed by wafts of burning fat smoke.

If I have washing out I am almost apoplectic.

Allywill · 22/05/2022 13:31

I hate bbqs. Hate eating outside. It’s either too cold or too hot with loads of flies/wasps. I hate getting bits of food all spread out. Like sausages are ready so have 2 of those then the chicken isn’t ready for another 20 mins. I like a meal to be served together. Garden full of smoke, horrible grill to clean at the end that doesn’t even fit in the sink.

Ithinkwemightgetaholiday · 22/05/2022 13:32

Not sure the BBQ is the biggest problem here! I hate unplanned events, I need to mentally and physically prepare! I love BBQs though, there is a lot of different food you could have. However this one seems doomed 😬Eating inside just isn't the same, so like you say, what's the point. However the gin will most likely ease the situation 😆

PonyPatter44 · 22/05/2022 13:33

Not in our house. It is MY bbq, I really like doing it and take it far too seriously and noone gets those horrible burned on the outside, raw on the inside sausages on my watch! DP isn't allowed to do much to it beyond keep an eye on the coals.

My mum is like you though, OP, she hates bbqs and spends all her time moaning about them. We don't invite her any more.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 22/05/2022 13:43

love barbecues, those ones where you get the food as it’s ready are caused by people who don’t know how to cook food on a grill - you can time it so it’s all ready together. You can make really tasty food very quickly and with little mess inside - just keep it simple. Vegetarian barbecues are great too, grilled halloumi is a food of the gods.

orwellwasright · 22/05/2022 14:08

Can't bear them. Cheap meat badly cooked, uncomfortable seating arrangements, shit weather, warm wine, insects.

Gardens are for looking at, not actually spending time in. Shudder.

Loopytiles · 22/05/2022 14:09

Your problem isn’t BBQs. Your problems are hosting hassles and your DP not doing his fair share.

orwellwasright · 22/05/2022 14:11

What I probably hate most is the insistence you're supposed to like them because lots of people do.

I find this with lots of things - festivals, holidays, hot weather, sitting outside, people.

urrrgh46 · 22/05/2022 14:16

Love the smell of other peoples - otherwise hate them! Can't be arsed with the prep, the fact that half my kids don't even like them. The burnt everything usually and the chaos of the tidy up too!

urrrgh46 · 22/05/2022 14:17

Give me eating outside in France with some salad, fabulous bread etc over a bbq any day!!

Oh how I agree!

IRunbecauseILikeCake · 22/05/2022 14:22

I find them over-rated. I do like a nice burger done on the barbecue but I absolutely hate all the faffing about done beforehand.

Glitterblue · 22/05/2022 14:24

I hate them but I think in my case it's because the ones we've been invited to always have so many people we don't know and I hate the social aspect of them. I also have a horrible memory of undercooked burgers at one. I never understand why it's always a "thing" the minute the weather is nice, people getting excited over BBQs.

Stuckandinamess · 22/05/2022 14:33

Guests have turned up a couple of hours early. Dh is at shop because he hasn't got half of the stuff he needs (and I am on strike as you know). Kitchen looks like a bomb has hit it because he was chopping and marinating chicken before he went out and hadn't cleaned up after himself. I am upstairs getting changed because they have clearly made an effort (unlike me) and I'm looking for the gin miniatures I got from Christmas which I think might be in a shoebox in the wardrobe.......

I do enjoy them in my own space. I know my garden is safe for my 18 month old to run around. Me and DH I’ve good food so we make our burgers, koftas, kebabs and marinades from scratch so I know I’ll enjoy the food and that it will have been prepared safely.

At other people’s houses it depends. I’ve seen far too many incidents of poor food hygiene to feel comfortable eating at some peoples homes. Plus, budget sausages and burgers for me are not a treat and I would rather not eat them.

i enjoy the social aspect though.

nearlyspringyay · 22/05/2022 14:45

Love a bbq. Properly done though. We never have cheap meat badly cooked and it's not a lot of faff. I usually do a whole joint or chicken, shawarmas or kofte, anything Turkish / Greek. Also love smoking so a brisket or pulled pork.

Never use lighter fluid either.

Those that don't like them I think tyre doing it wrong!

lioncitygirl · 22/05/2022 14:51

We have bbqs really often - some decided in the am (like today!) yanbu to not like them tho. Different strokes and all that.

MissPeregrinesHome · 22/05/2022 14:52

I quite like the trickle feed aspect of bbqs. Probably means I eat a lot more without realising it.

Inertia · 22/05/2022 14:52

Such a bloody faff. Hours of prep of umpteen salads and marinades, vast amounts of cleaning up, DH supervising the barbecue and calling for plates/ food/ beer to be brought out to him. Cannot be doing with it.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 22/05/2022 14:53

I'm hitting the gin and leaving him to it!!

Good for you! He's invited friends round so he can look after them. And he can clean up afterwards too.

Shade17 · 22/05/2022 14:54

Cheap meat badly cooked

That’s fairly easy to rectify though isn’t it? I tend to do things like fillet steak, homemade chicken tikka, homemade burgers and amazing sausages that my butcher makes. I’m also pretty handy, so much so that I’m usually requested to BBQ at friends’ houses. Last time I went to a friends we just BBQd a 2kg fillet for 5 of us.

Shoxfordian · 22/05/2022 14:55

Feel a bit sorry for your guests tbh
I

lightand · 22/05/2022 14:59

Funny you should say this. Just been invited to one this weekend.

But I dont have to cook it or even prepare it. The host though always runs late at them though. About 1 hour late. She doesnt like people to help much. So guests dither about when to arrive. Too early, and nothing is done. But too late would be rude.
