To hate barbeques

Just that. I hate them with an absolute passion. Don't like the taste of BBQ foods, can't be bothered with all the prep Nd carting stuff in and out of the house when I have a perfectly good kitchen and dining table. DH has invited friends for BBQ today. Currently grey skies , 15 degrees and not in my opinion a nice day for outdoors cooking and eating. I pointed this out and he said well we can eat it inside then- what is the bloody point??? I'm going on strike and he can do the lot.
Did I mention that he has been out all day with friends and I have been cleaning and laundry /ironing for two hours? I'm hitting the gin and leaving him to it!!

What I probably hate most is the insistence you're supposed to like them because lots of people do.

I find this with lots of things - festivals, holidays, hot weather, sitting outside, people.

I love a bbq, I find some good quality meat and fish, a simple salad and some potato salad is perfect. None of this faffing with a million salads (that no-one ever really eats) and we tend to agree with people whether we do 'everything ready at once' or a 'cook and graze' scenario

Often we do a bbq just for us though

Imsittinginthekitchensink · 22/05/2022 17:10

Hate them. Hate eating outside. Suspect meat eaters enjoy them more but as a vegetarian some halloumi with a side of grim pasta salad is neither interesting nor requires outdoor cooking.

As a vegetarian, I spend most of my summer eating dishes from the vegetarian BBQ book Charred by Genevieve Taylor. It's lovely. Though I suppose it might be less appealing if you hate eating outside...

Love them ... assuming they are well done. DH and I are having a BBQ tonight- just the two of us, decent burgers, grilled peppers and a nice salad. And wine obviously. Much prefer having a BBQ with friends than a formal dinner, where you are invariably sat next to some bore (they probably think that about me Grin).

summer712 · 22/05/2022 17:44

I hope op has got smashed on Minature gins, dragged the kareoke out and is jamming to fire starter right now

the80sweregreat · 22/05/2022 17:50

I've never been a fan.
The kitchen is a little bit too far away from the back garden and it's a lot of faffing about walking stuff about. It's always ' can you fetch .. '
I'm not keen on sausages or burgers and always worry they are not cooked properly.
Then there's the flies and the wasps and then walking it all back to wash up leaving a dirty bbq that nobody wants to clean up.

IJoinedJustForThisThread · 22/05/2022 17:52

I don’t see the point in barbecues. I can see why you might want to sit outside and eat your dinner on a nice day, but I don’t understand why people want to cook their dinner in the garden.

Gingercatlover · 22/05/2022 17:54

Hate them, can't get the weather right, never know what to buy to put on it and can't be faffed with lugging all the stuff outside Confused

maddiemookins16mum · 22/05/2022 18:02

Love them. But everyone helps, we buy nice food and enjoy eating outside and making the most of good weather.

Mally100 · 22/05/2022 18:12

Love them. Absolutely everything can be prepped the day before. You must be doing it wrong if you feel that it's alot of prep and work. I usually do 3 salads the day before, and kept in the fridge. Same as meat, marinate the day before and tastes even better. I sometimes just do it all in disposable containers so no cleaning up either.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 22/05/2022 18:13

This about sums it up for me Grin

My only issue is the cleaning of the BBQ itself, the food is easy enough just marinade things in ziplock bags, a salad takes a few minutes to make, cook the corn on the BBQ. Buy coleslaw and make beetroot tzatziki the day before so it tastes better. DH sorts drinks, furniture etc and because I've prepped and cooked he does the clean up while I have a glass of wine. PIL are pescatarian so quite frequently we just do fish, seafood and veggies. Delicious.

Baystard · 22/05/2022 18:51

I like a BBQ as a family meal on a nice dinner evening, it makes a bit of a change from sitting in the kitchen as normal especially if we're having burgers or kebabs or something that is easy to bbq. DH can't see the point though.

balalake · 22/05/2022 18:53

I am with you OP. Happy for the alternative to cook indoors on the stove/cooker and then carry food outside.

TruthHertz · 22/05/2022 18:57

Merryclaire · 22/05/2022 13:27

I love a BBQ. But I hate that the men take all the credit for cooking (ie flipping some meat), when the women have (usually) done all the shopping, meat prep, salad, sides etc. I know that’s all very stereotypical but always seems to be the case!

I like that the men usually step up and offer to do the bit that leaves your clothes stinking of smoke. I'll happily plonk a few plates and pots of potato salad on the table instead.

TruthHertz · 22/05/2022 18:59

Doing it in the oven doesn't give the proper charcoal flavour!

I hate bbqs. Hate eating outside. It’s either too cold or too hot with loads of flies/wasps. I hate getting bits of food all spread out. Like sausages are ready so have 2 of those then the chicken isn’t ready for another 20 mins. I like a meal to be served together. Garden full of smoke, horrible grill to clean at the end that doesn’t even fit in the sink.

...who serves the meat piecemeal?? Confused

MintyMoocow · 22/05/2022 15:05

How else can you legitimately invite people for a meal at your house and just serve them sausages and burgers?

😂

CloudPop · 22/05/2022 19:05

Can understand why people don't enjoy undercooked sausages, "grim salads", and many of the other woes. This isn't to do with bbqs it's to do with doing them badly. I wouldn't want to eat a "grim salad" indoors either. Well executed barbecues are fantastic.

I love a good bbq

we had one this afternoon just me, dh and the kids - lots of food we actually like not burgers we had a massive salad, with some bbq fish, I love salmon done on the bbq, home made potato salad and some vegetables & squeaky cheese.

I hate it when it’s all sausages and burgers we like experimenting with different foods.

im not keen on having people over tho or going to other peoples houses

We often have people over for sausage and mash or sausage casserole...

Can't bear them. Cheap meat badly cooked, uncomfortable seating arrangements, shit weather, warm wine, insects.

Gardens are for looking at, not actually spending time in. Shudder.

Speak for yourself, we have good meat (steaks, chops, pork belly betc) cooked well.

Seats are comfy, drinks are cold and no insects.

Weather today was glorious.

CloudPop · 22/05/2022 19:13

@00100001 exactly. Same as cooking anything. If you buy crap and cook it badly it will be horrible.
