To hate barbeques

Stuckandinamess · 22/05/2022 13:24

Just that. I hate them with an absolute passion. Don't like the taste of BBQ foods, can't be bothered with all the prep Nd carting stuff in and out of the house when I have a perfectly good kitchen and dining table. DH has invited friends for BBQ today. Currently grey skies , 15 degrees and not in my opinion a nice day for outdoors cooking and eating. I pointed this out and he said well we can eat it inside then- what is the bloody point??? I'm going on strike and he can do the lot.
Did I mention that he has been out all day with friends and I have been cleaning and laundry /ironing for two hours? I'm hitting the gin and leaving him to it!!

I actually really enjoy a BBQ.
It is a fair amount of prep work but quite smooth after that.
I think a bigger issue is the weather is good enough for long enough for it to worthwhile for people to get the kit to make them run smoothly.

gamerchick · 22/05/2022 15:03

I don't mind them really. But my job is to sort out the ice buckets for alcohol, the alcohol and set up the gazebo and seating area. Husband takes care of all the boring stuff like the food etc.

It sounds like your husband needs to learn how lessons about impromptu guests like. Just give them alcohol, they'll be fine.

MintyMoocow · 22/05/2022 15:05

How else can you legitimately invite people for a meal at your house and just serve them sausages and burgers?

LosingTheWill2022 · 22/05/2022 15:10

I would never host a barbecue. I'm perfectly happy to eat outside but genuinely don't understand the need to cook the food outside.
Maybe it's because I have a small, open plan house with bifolds opening onto the garden, so I can cook food inside while people are outside and still be part of the conversation.

But even attending barbecues hosted by others I've never understood the appeal. It's often seemed like a 'performance' event and rather than just enjoying food with friends.

Love the smell of a bbq on a summers day, we have enough grim, cold winter months where we are stuck indoors, gardens are to be enjoyed too and are not there “just to be looked at”.

I love a BBQ. But I hate that the men take all the credit for cooking (ie flipping some meat), when the women have (usually) done all the shopping, meat prep, salad, sides etc. I know that’s all very stereotypical but always seems to be the case!

My SH does fab BBQs, it's not flipping meat, he does pizzas, rotisserie meats, salads, fab accompaniments.

I love a BBQ.

Sunnytwobridges · 22/05/2022 15:24

I love love them. BBQ is my favorite food. But I hate eating outside even at a restaurant. But I’d rather do a bbq then go out to eat, it’s more social and cozy to me… and the food is usually better lol

PurassicJark · 22/05/2022 15:26

Bet he won't want another after he's done all the work for a change.

Antarcticant · 22/05/2022 15:28

They're very difficult to get right. The weather has to be suitable - a feat in itself - then there's the timing of the food. It can all so easily fragment and go wrong.

Antarcticant · 22/05/2022 15:30

Just leaving this here ...

Oblomov22 · 22/05/2022 15:43

Love BBQ's. Dh has just bought a new one. We bbq a lot throughout the year, even in the winter.

nc888 · 22/05/2022 15:49

Oh, I bloody love a bbq! Bbq'd meat and veg and pizza tastes so much better on the bbq.

nc888 · 22/05/2022 15:55

MintyMoocow · 22/05/2022 15:05

How else can you legitimately invite people for a meal at your house and just serve them sausages and burgers?

Other things you can cook on a bbq:

Pizzas
Halloumi
Aubergine
Peppers
Onions
Rotisserie
Pulled pork
Skewers

I could go on 🤤

summer712 · 22/05/2022 15:55

I love a bbq but I hate the aftermath of cleaning it and getting rid of the burnt coals etc etc.

I have a George foreman electric one and I love it. Just wipes clean if you wipe it when it's still hot.

Best thing I ever bought. We actually use it all year round.

Crankley · 22/05/2022 15:56

I've never been a big fan of chicken or sausages or hamburgers from the BBQ which are invariably raw inside so havent been to a BBQ for years. My sister used to cook a large joint of lamb or beef or pork on a rotisserie spit on her barbecue for a few hours, OMG it was the most amazing meat I've ever eaten.

BackInBlackAgain · 22/05/2022 16:07

Was thinking the other day how much I hate bbq’s, DP bloody loves them and would have one every day if he could, just don’t get the appeal

diddl · 22/05/2022 16:12

We've just had one for lunch.

It was just the 4 of us though so with everyone chipping in it wasn't a big effort for any one person.

notlyndasnell · 22/05/2022 16:30

@Antarcticant exactly! Plus it's so much faff, and everything stinks of smoke! That said, I relented and had the BBQ going for two nights in a row because DS and his GF are staying and the fresh fish here tastes lovely when bbqd. (I'm not in the UK, btw)

easyday · 22/05/2022 16:37

I love them, even better if some one else can stand at it enveloped in smoke! It makes a change. I don't mind the smells from neighbours having one either - nice to hear people enjoying themselves.
Too bad your weather is poor - it's been very warm and sunny here in London!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 22/05/2022 16:50

I love a good bbq. I hate a bad bbq. Most people make bad ones.

I don't find them any more work than other full meal cooking.

The trick is to cook most things next to the charcoal embers, not over them. And to buy good quality hardwood charcoal in good sized pieces, not the crap they sell in supermarkets and garages.

FreezyFreezy · 22/05/2022 16:56

I love BBQs, especially as other people's houses! I like the smell and the taste as well as the social side of it.

When we have them though, I'm not left to do all the buying and prep so it's not as much of a chore as it is to some on here.

RollOnWinter · 22/05/2022 16:59

I don't like BBQs. All that smoke, the stink of the meat cooking, the smell on my clothes, the burnt food. I don't eat burgers, sausages, or steak anyway, and I cook salmon and jacket potatoes in the oven. I can't understand the attraction of BBQs at all.

Oblomov22 · 22/05/2022 17:00

"invariably raw inside "
My Dh is a very good bbq cook. Nothing is raw. Cooked perfectly, not burnt. Clearly most people are eating bbq'd food by people who aren't good bbq cooks.

Xtraincome · 22/05/2022 17:02

Love the smell of a BBQ. Find the whole affair rather dull- either hosting one or attending one. I love sitting in the garden but am not a fan of eating in bits and bobs.

I prefer cooking indoors and eating outside 😀

Thatswhyimacat · 22/05/2022 17:05

Bloody love a bbq. Stop prepping all those salads, noone actually wants them and they're actually the main source of bbq food poisoning.
