To hate barbeques

Stuckandinamess · 22/05/2022 13:24

Just that. I hate them with an absolute passion. Don't like the taste of BBQ foods, can't be bothered with all the prep Nd carting stuff in and out of the house when I have a perfectly good kitchen and dining table. DH has invited friends for BBQ today. Currently grey skies , 15 degrees and not in my opinion a nice day for outdoors cooking and eating. I pointed this out and he said well we can eat it inside then- what is the bloody point??? I'm going on strike and he can do the lot.
Did I mention that he has been out all day with friends and I have been cleaning and laundry /ironing for two hours? I'm hitting the gin and leaving him to it!!

Think my tactics might have dissuaded DH from BbQ for a while.... left everything to him, and I mean everything. Started on Gin, moved to wine and spent the entire time chatting, not running around like a loon. I think the penny has dropped there is more to a BbQ than just standing moving meat around a grill😄

Hate them. Hate eating outside. Suspect meat eaters enjoy them more but as a vegetarian some halloumi with a side of grim pasta salad is neither interesting nor requires outdoor cooking.

Nothing requires outside cooking!

So vegetarians are offered

Halloumi

Aubergine steaks

Stuffed mushrooms

Potato chickpea and cashew nut curry

Spinach and roasted aubergine dhall

Maybe still not good enough for you, but I think that's pretty nice.

Penguinevere · 22/05/2022 19:19

I see why you might feel like that as I have had some rubbish BBQ food before which put me off. I think it’s one of those things that is often done badly op.

Fairislefandango · 22/05/2022 19:20

I love barbecues as long as they are done by a skilled, or at least competent, barbecuer. Dh is a calm, organised, tidy and very good barbecue chef. I make some salads, he does everything else. It always tastes amazing. We happily eat inside if the weather is bad. That doesn't mean the barbecue is pointless, because it's delicious!

Blughbablugh · 22/05/2022 19:29

Oh great here's the annual 'I hate BBQs' thread. I love them. We've just had one. We are having our kitchen done in a couple of weeks and if the weather's good will be having a lot of them!

Zazdar · 22/05/2022 19:30

We are lucky in that we can BBQ and eat inside if the weather is bad.

I won’t tolerate cheap meat either. It is a choice.

Coastalcreeksider · 22/05/2022 19:35

I only like my friend's BBQs as her husband cooks everything really well including fish and she always has loads of other stuff plus large amounts of alcohol.

Plus they have to clean the BBQ while I don't! 🙂

Arsewangry · 22/05/2022 19:52

Completely agree. My in-laws are already talking about cracking out the bbq, and I cannot STAND the faff of dragging all the dinner related crap out in to the garden, all in different serving bowls, DMIL gets stressed whilst the men look busy pontificating over burnt sausages on the bbq and then alllllll the washing up afterwards it's just a drag. Every bloody year.

ellieboolou · 22/05/2022 19:54

Love BBQ's I've had 6 already this year! Very little prep, good quality meat, kids always eat something! Very little washing up, I don't burn my foods either. I've elderly neighbours each side, who usually pop over / take a plate of food, BBQ salmon and steaks are delicious.

On the other hand I bloody hate summer, picnics, flies, wine, evenings that stay light until 10pm - swings & roundabouts

jaundicedoutlook · 22/05/2022 19:55

I don’t mind them but can take or leave them on the whole. I always insist that DH does all the fiddling around with lighting and cleaning the wretched thing and I draw the liens at sausages. Has to be something with a bone cooked slowly over the cooler side with the lid down. Only thing I really look forward to is halloumi but DH has a bad habit of letting bits slip down the gaps in the grill…

Scottishskifun · 22/05/2022 19:56

I love a low key bbq but we have a dual one so I can be lazy and turn on the gas! But I agree way more effort goes in then many realise although DH hates bbqs as well so I do it all if we have them!

ellieboolou · 22/05/2022 19:59

@RewildingAmbridge beetroot tatziki 😻 sounds amazing- could I have the recipe please?

mydogisthebest · 22/05/2022 20:11

I don't like them at all. Not keen on eating in the garden. It's almost always too cold or, occasionally, too hot, rarely just right for me.

I hate that you get wasps flying all round your food.

Me and DH are vegetarian and, yes, I know you can cook veggie things on it but I just don't see the point.

The smell of barbeques actually makes me feel sick. Our neighbours have quite a few and this year have moved their new enormous bbq to the fence dividing our gardens. The fence is right next to our living room window so if it is open we get the smoke and vile smell indoors.

Our houses are semis and they have around 16 feet between them and their other neighbour plus our gardens are 80 feet long so just why they have put it where they have god only know (apart from the fact they are pretty thick)

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 22/05/2022 20:15

We BBQ most nice weekends and DH does all the food prep and cooking. All I do is buy the stuff and keep my seat warm

roarfeckingroarr · 22/05/2022 20:25

I'm selling my beautiful flat bang on the river in London purely because it's a long (990 years) leasehold but we are banned from having barbecues.

So YABVVVVU!

garlictwist · 22/05/2022 20:32

There's about half an hour a year when it's warm enough for a bbq. The rest of the time it's too cold and I'd rather be indoors. I also don't trust people to cook food properly especially if it's dark and they've had beers so I usually just eat bread and cheese.

Sugarcube84 · 22/05/2022 20:33

I love a bbq they bring back loads of happy memories as a child . We throw sausage and burgers on first to feed kids and starving adults then move on to drumsticks/kebabs, lamb chops and steak. One salad plus jacket potatoes thrown in the oven plus ready made coleslaw and potato salad. The only prep needed is remembering to marinate the chicken.

ArtVandalay · 22/05/2022 20:38

I have zero love for barbecues but everyone else seems to love them. I don’t cook so have no input whatsoever.

We have just finished one. Dh did lamb, chicken, sausages and halloumi. I am not much of a meat fan, so just had the salads which were yum.

Crikeyalmighty · 22/05/2022 20:41

Strangely I like the smell of them but don't much like barbecued food. I honestly prefer some good quality sausages baked in the oven !!

My bbq role consists of making Eton mess and setting the table.

mnnewbie111 · 22/05/2022 20:45

You're not doing them right

Heresafe · 22/05/2022 20:54

Wow I don’t know if it’s just that this thread has attracted mostly those who don’t like bbqs or whether they’re just not as popular as I thought; but I simply love them and never had one I haven’t enjoyed! We haven’t exactly mastered them ourselves but have fun trying on a fire pit .

Lilyann60 · 22/05/2022 21:05

Did family bbq at ours for last two weekends. Decent meats etc but omg what a faff I think I’ve had it with bbqs now until next year. Fridge full of left over cold meats , wilting salads and a greasy yucky bbq. Uuuurgh And I’m knackered 🤪

RewildingAmbridge · 22/05/2022 21:42

@ellieboolou not much of a recipe, a Greek colleague I used to work with would always make it for sharing lunches and everyone used to rave about it and she just laughed. When she retired she told me how to make it.
Basically get a vacuum pack of beetroot (no vinegar just plain from the supermarket usually about 70p), In a large bowl mix Greek yogurt and mayo 2:1 ratio with salt, pepper and either crushed garlic (3 large cloves minimum) or that garlic paste you get in the big jar from the world food section, a generous teaspoon, mix together, then snip the corner of your beetroot pack and pour the juice into the yogurt mix, stir well. There are usually 4 beetroot in those packs dice two , half centimeter cubes or smaller roughly, and grate two (standard grater not the really fine one), mix it all into the yoghurt, you can also add a small squeeze of lemon but don't over do it. Put into Tupperware and leave in the fridge overnight, it is noticeably better the next day, lasts 4/5 days in the fridge and is delicious, give it a mix before serving. Sorry I can't give you measurements for the yogurt and mayo I just do it by eye.

Lavenderlast · 22/05/2022 21:45

YANBU. My neighbours have one every week, but at different random times so I never manage to get my windows shut in tome to stop the house stinking from their smoke.

Food tastes way better when cooked inside. Bbqs are for the men who want to fantasise about being a caveman and the women who find that attractive.
