To be upset husband has booked a ‘novelty’ restaurant?

It’s my 50th next Saturday. DH told me he’d book a nice restaurant and I was really looking forward to it as we rarely ever eat out. I was expecting to go somewhere nice in central Liverpool, he knows I love the waterfront so I was thinking he’d book somewhere around there.

Today he’s revealed he’s booked a place in Sheffield (which is annoying enough in itself, 90 minute drive for a meal and it won’t be relaxing at all) which is a novelty restaurant where the staff are intentionally rude to you and it’s all part of it. He’s booked it for the teens as well. I asked why on Earth he’d booked that and he said because he was curious about it and thought it’d be fun.

But it’s not me at all. I’m very self-conscious and even though it’ll all be a joke the thought of the staff verbally abusing me makes me anxious. I’ll end up taking something to heart and getting upset.

DH is annoyed I’ve asked him to cancel it and says I’m a spoil sport, but it’s my birthday dinner.

We're sad you chose not to join us for your 50th but our Karen's respect (kind of) your decision.

That being said we'd love to offer you and your husband (who has incredible taste) a free meal on us valid for the next 12 months. You can find our email details on our website and we can get you sorted.

Have a great birthday,

Karen xoxo

This is incredibly lame.

Pipsquiggle · 18/05/2022 07:40

Come on people. Let's see the fun in this.

I think it's great @Karensdiner has joined the thread. They've got a shed load of free advertising in various papers and they are paying it back.

Although 95% of people on here said they wouldn't want to go, we are hardly their target market.

Although you're not my cup of tea @Karensdiner I do wish you success.

@trapperjohna at least that's your DSS birthday sorted

Ha ha ha. Well played @Karensdiner Grin grin] Grin

Karen’s Diner has entered the chat 🔥🔥🔥

Perhaps consider changing the name of your "restaurant". It's very offensive to women called Karen. You might get a bit more interest.

stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou · 18/05/2022 16:59

Hahahahahahahaha @Karensdiner it is not lame

Maybe the owner is called Karen. It was a very common name in the early to mid 70s.

yellowsuninthesky · 18/05/2022 17:04

Oh I've looked at the website, it probably isn't, though they give you a free drink if you are called Karen (but only if you show ID because all us 45+ women will lie and say our names are Karen).

There is one in Manchester - why did your DH want to go all the way to Sheffield?

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 07/03/2023 22:16

No way would I ever go to a place like that.

Why on earth did you wake this thread up?

RampantIvy · 07/03/2023 22:46

I drove past it on Sunday. TBH it looks a bit of a dive from outside.

Poscapen · 07/03/2023 23:06

THIS IS A BLOODY ZOMBIE THREAD

PoseyFlump · 07/03/2023 23:34

For a moment there I thought the OP was going to say he'd booked it again for this birthday. It's even less funny a year on.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 08/03/2023 00:03

Oh no, I didn't look at the date.

maddening · 08/03/2023 00:08

Tell him to cancel it and book Gusto on the liverpool docks - amazing food and service and something for everybody imo.

maddening · 08/03/2023 00:09

Oh shit sorry zombie 🧟‍♂️

Spoilt? Because you don't want to do an activity that he really likes and you loath....and it's apparently your present!

Let him go with the kids (take a friend) and you'll celebrate at home with friends. Chose a present and just ask him to transfer the money. There, you're not selfish at all. You're happy for him to do his own thing even if it's your birthday (nice), your happy to shop for your own present and relieved him of the hassle (nice) and in April you had an experience in mind that you wouldn't mind trying so you'll just allocate yourself a few quid and a day/eve for that (equal)

@JudgeRudy I imagine OP has got over it now as this was from May last year

gamerchick · 08/03/2023 10:46

Yanno this thread is properly old. There will be another birthday coming up soon man!

TheInterceptor · 08/03/2023 11:00

These threads are like bumping into an old friend Smile

GoodJanetBadJanet · 08/03/2023 11:03

Not sure why I was deleted - all I said was I remember this thread from first time round?!

BalloonsAndWhistles · 08/03/2023 11:21

The second you said ‘novelty’ I knew it would be this one. This wouldn’t be my thing either, plus I hate the whole ‘Karen’ thing. It’s normally said by thick, unintelligent people.

AntiSocial6DaysAWeek · 08/03/2023 11:36

I think MN should change the colour of the title banner or something if the thread is a zombie.

Everyone gets annoyed about it but I know I don't generally look at the date and if it's had a recent response you assume it's active. Older threads are still helpful to read in some instances but it would stop people commenting!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 08/03/2023 11:39

this is why I wish old threads would just drop off your watched list like they used to. odd bods staring up long dead threads.

So do I - maybe I will get deleted too?! 😄
