To be deeply offended

Is it me, or is it so much easier to offend people now a day.

There are more protected characteristics (rightly so) but I almost feel like I'm always stepping on egg shells and concerned about upset someone.

Does anyone share this feeling?

Perhaps the ladies of mumsnet should stop engaging in misandry too sex is a protected characteristic.

Misandry doesn’t exist in any real sense.

A glance at most MN threads will show you that somewhere, someone is always able to take offence at something.

OP:
“someone drove a car into my window and was found to have heroin in their system”

Typical MN responses
“how dare you not have sympathy for a struggling junkie?! What’s the matter with you?!”

“maybe they had SEN?”

“I find this triggering because my auntie once drove through a wall and lost her arm”

the best thing is that most of the easily triggered groups are now fighting amongst themselves because they are encroaching on one another’s space and contradict one another. It’s going to be interesting watching it play out. The new trend on MN seems to be screaming “MISOGYNY” at someone.

DS got accused of misogyny at age 5 for being too reliant on female staff at school... all the staff were female Hmm

It's a bloody minefield now out there, there's always someone waiting to find offence at anything they don't like.
I sometimes wonder where humour and comedy will end up if everyone becomes off limits for the butt of a joke!

What joke would you like to make that you can't? Confused

Feckingfeck · 03/05/2022 21:25

@saleorbouy
To be fair a lot of comics are minorities and get laughs out of making jokes about their own minority. Everyone laughs (well most) but not everyone could joke about the same topic.

Giraffesandbottoms · 03/05/2022 21:26

@Feckingfeck

on MN or in real life? Either way it’s batshit

noborisno · 03/05/2022 21:28

I just don't mind offending people.

WDTABNONONO · 03/05/2022 21:31

It's incredibly hard to offend me and I'd say I'm pretty sensitive emotions wise.

I just know I'm not the centre of the universe - so not everything is personal and not everyone has to agree with me.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 03/05/2022 21:34

CityCommuter · 03/05/2022 18:51

@medicmummm yes I agree! People are very easily offended these days... maybe it's all the 'woke' community as Piers Morgan says..,

It does make me laugh when people try and use woke as an insult. Why wouldn’t you want to be alert to injustice in society? Stay in the dark ages but trying to belittle those that don’t, nah.

Lbushsgkm · 03/05/2022 21:47

I honestly never experience this problem or feeling. I’m not especially young – 40ish. What sort of thing are you saying / stopping yourself from saying OP?!

Its mainly gender/ pronoun stuff

Wasn't until I joined MN that i discovered chest feeding (apparently breast feeding is offensive) and that you cant say only females can give birth 😫

Some people make it their life's work to go out looking for things to be offended by.

badhappening · 03/05/2022 21:51

Have to admit, I'm not up to date with political correctness (if that's what your also encompassing here).
But I live in the middle of nowhere and don't encounter what is 'correct' these days.
Many years ago, I went to school in London and we genuinely accepted each other without any issues or questioning because as far as we were concerned we were all just ordinary people with the same flesh and blood, whatever colour, creed or religion. Truly happy days.

Like the OP, for example.

Pumperthepumper · 03/05/2022 21:51

Pumperthepumper · 03/05/2022 21:52

Breastfeeding.

I can guarantee you that wouldn't be the same story for others in your school.

People would say the same about my school because they chose not to see the shit I went through.

Pumperthepumper · 03/05/2022 22:04

Only females give birth, breastfeeding.

Nothing is happening.

oakleaffy · 03/05/2022 22:10

Feckingfeck · 03/05/2022 18:36

Anything

Especially gender identities... I just know so little about it Confused

It’s nuts.
Even more nowadays when people are looking to take legal action at the slightest thing, as they swan in, dick swinging, to a women only waxing salon.

Bangolads · 03/05/2022 22:14

New NHS guidelines state that breast feeding will now be referred to as ‘chest feeding’. It’s now wrong to say breast feeding, it’s offensive. Go figure.

ClassyCupcake2020 · 03/05/2022 22:15

Its fashionable to be offended now. But remember, offending someone isn't a crime. Being cruel, nasty and denying people opportunity because of a said characteristic is wrong, but simply holding an opinion is not.

IE: If someone were to be opposed to homosexuality. I don't share that opinion, but person is totally entitled to hold that view without being shouted at or cancelled. We can debate it, but person should not be silenced.

If however, same person denies a homosexual a job, or passes slurs, is cruel. Not okay and ought to be reprimanded.

Well, they haven’t updated their websites then.

  • Why would you be asked anything about a group you don't attend, about an identity that has nothing to do with you?

I feel like your just making up a scenario that wouldn't happen in order to validate your 'confusion' on the topic.*

This is such a bizarre take, I have lesbian and gay friends, some who identify as queer some who don't. We talk and socialize so of course these conversations have come up.

And in those conversations you’d say ‘this is my queer friend Sarah who goes to a queer group’?
