Humble bragging

I have only come across this term on MN but i think I wintessed it first hand... whats it all about?

Family in lemur enclosure at zoo talking to keeper.

Keeper "you can get a little closer if you want"

Woman "we don't need too thanks we honey mooned in Madagascar so we have seen so many lemurs up close"

Keeper "oh okay, bet that was great"

Woman "it was amaaaazing... we could hear them all around our cabin at night aaaaahahahahhaha" (not sure why this was funny- but apparently it was hilarious)

Don't get me wrong I wasn't jealous in the slightest... nothing i would be creeped out by more than animals at night...

It just felt like one up man ship at its finest. I mean why go in there if you only want to belittle the experience Confused

Whats the worst humble brag you have witnessed?

I don't see the first example as a brag even, just making conversation about life experiences. I'd be delighted and interested to hear about someone going to Madagascar and seeing lemurs in the wild. It's not like they just announced it in the pub, it was quite relevant to what was actually going on at the time.

Same. Honeymooning in Madagascar and seeing lemurs in the wild sounds like an incredible experience! I absolutely wouldnt begrudge someone for wanting to share it. Probably they thought someone who works with lemurs would be more interested.

“Olivia is 8 today. She is such a thoughtful, loving, kind little girl, we are so proud of her”. Makes you hope they have the teenager from hell 5 or 6 years down the line.

@CounsellorTroi On what planet is this a humble brag? You sound like a seriously bitter person.

planetme · 03/05/2022 18:44

Oh god I've got to admit I've done braggy social media stuff in the past

I've done the new nails on a bmw steering wheel 😳😳
(Said bmw wasn't even mine! It was Dh's company car)

The casual boarding pass / designer bag thing (we didn't go first class though)

Pics on fb the day I bought my last house

Pics on fb of my car (Porsche) again the day I bought it. Disclaimer - it is 20 years old and one of the cheaper models

In my defence I spent years being absolutely skint and struggling. and during that period a lot of "friends" looked down on us as a family so tbh showing my successes was a bit of a fuck you to those ones

Its a bit twatty though regardless so I do try and rein it in now

tomatoandherbs · 03/05/2022 18:46

@planetme

Doesn’t sound like humble bragging to me. A touch twatty but not substantially so! We have all seen much more twatty behaviour!

OlympicProcrastinator · 03/05/2022 18:58

A few years ago a poster started a thread about a supposed road rage incident where a man shouted ‘bourgeois birch’ at her.

Course he did love. That totally happened 😂

It IS a bit twatty, but I'd rather that than the humble brag

Yeah I suppose it's full on shameless bragging really 😳nowt humble about it

I don't really know why I've done it,
When I know full well it's unnecessary and annoys people

Reminds me of something Alan Titchmarsh said he once overheard a discussion between to vair posh ladies at the Chelsea Flower Show:

Woman 1 "Do you have swans on your lake?"

Woman 2 "Only on the small one."

That's so funny! Reminds me of this woman I went to school with who married a vair posh man. She once posted "Been so worried about Olympia and Ophelia all day. It's such a headache not being able to see them on the tennis court now they want to play without Mummy".

the80sweregreat · 03/05/2022 21:09

An old friend I don't see much now loves to include the word ' en suite' in her conversations because she knows I don't have one ( the horror !)
We survive.

AnnUumellmahaye · 03/05/2022 21:18

I don't think there's anything a wrong with showing off a bit, if you've worked hard for something. I don't begrudge someone a bit of bragging.
I prefer the outright show off than someone trying to disguise it as anything else.

I think the fakers are even funnier though. Mum had a friend who would always say things were from Laura Ashley (in a group setting) they were actually from TJ Hughes. Called her out on it in the end. I'm happy to get a bargain, what's the point lying about it.

Competitive bragging is also very fun to watch 😂

Happened yesterday, was out for dinner in a nice restaurant when a couple on a date sat near our table. At the end of the meal the man announced for half the restaurant to hear...

"Is it alright if I pay in cash?"

Silly man - doesn't he know everyone is this part of town only pays with magic beans and cows?

This is because of the covid restrictions

medicmummm · 04/05/2022 00:35

Was wondering if the can I pay in cash was more to do with them being on a date and him bragging about paying?

Just a theory 🤔

Gagaandgag · 04/05/2022 01:16

Last Friday night I went for drinks with my cousin who is a year younger than me. She has no DC. After a few drinks…

“But it’s been so hard having a higher IQ than you. I wish I could just be a SAHM like you. I wish company hadn’t headhunted me and offered me the 100k+ job and then company fought hard for me so I reluctantly agreed to stay! (Rolling her eyes and sighing) If only my life was as easy as yours!”

No joke.
For context I’m not one to brag about anything but I was a successful teacher before I had kids and now I home educate them because they have challenging SEN! 🤣

After this we went home and she had called us an Uber. I’ve never been in one because I’ve never needed to. I started telling the guy my address -

Cousin laughing “Oh please excuse her she doesn’t get ubers” (eye roll)
To me - “Its ok! Relax. It’s all booked in” in patronising tone.

I mean she has always had a superior complex and I’ve let it go and laughed it off but this one irritated me! Fancy telling someone you have a higher IQ than them 🤣

Weldoinever · 04/05/2022 01:28

'This year we're not sending Christmas cards but instead making a donation to 'insert charity name' who I'm sure will really appreciate...blah blah blah '

I hate seeing this it's excruciatingly cringy.

cleanasawhistle · 04/05/2022 02:22

Said very loudly outside nursey....Jack darling dont get crumbs in the car car,you know daddy has to give 3 executives a lift to a meeting tomorrow

PutYourBackIntoit · 04/05/2022 03:07

skybluee · 04/05/2022 03:19

Couldn't believe that no-one called out the woman with the terrible 'dilemma' of whether or not to pay off her 13K mortgage. Diddums!

Don’t be daft, that’s not humble bragging or stealth posting. Maybe if they’d said it was a £1 million mortgage, but that’s my bias kicking in.

There can be implications to completely paying off your mortgage early. Keeping it on can be a good line of credit at much lower interest rates than loans or credit cards. So a question like that isn’t bragging, it’s about finding out the best way to maximise your finances vs future borrowing requirements (and the options for these decrease with your age).

Tabitha is usually staring vacantly at a wall of licking a plug socket.
