Humble bragging

Feckingfeck · 03/05/2022 10:45

I have only come across this term on MN but i think I wintessed it first hand... whats it all about?

Family in lemur enclosure at zoo talking to keeper.

Keeper "you can get a little closer if you want"

Woman "we don't need too thanks we honey mooned in Madagascar so we have seen so many lemurs up close"

Keeper "oh okay, bet that was great"

Woman "it was amaaaazing... we could hear them all around our cabin at night aaaaahahahahhaha" (not sure why this was funny- but apparently it was hilarious)

Don't get me wrong I wasn't jealous in the slightest... nothing i would be creeped out by more than animals at night...

It just felt like one up man ship at its finest. I mean why go in there if you only want to belittle the experience Confused

Whats the worst humble brag you have witnessed?

Humble brags sound kind of fun - I can't believe I've never heard of them before, but I'm soo stupid when it comes to stuff like this. I've had to take a break from social media as the modelling agency that scouted me keep sending me to tropical beaches with NO internet access, but I worry that it means I'm completely out of touch!!!

Couldn't believe that no-one called out the woman with the terrible 'dilemma' of whether or not to pay off her 13K mortgage. Diddums!

tomatoandherbs · 03/05/2022 17:11

But LOADS of people have barn conversions in the country that could accommodate another family
But not many have given it up for a Ukrainian family

and we all know the effort and hoops she would have had to have gone through to get the family over

so if she’s wants to shoe horn it in to a conversation, no frickin way am I going to sneer that’s she’s humble bragging about having space big enough to accommodate a family forced to flee from their worn torn country when I’m doing sweet fuck all to help them. As the overwhelming majority are

Do you think that no-one should ever ask for any kind of financial advice, because acknowledging that you have some money is bragging?

“Olivia is 8 today. She is such a thoughtful, loving, kind little girl, we are so proud of her”. Makes you hope they have the teenager from hell 5 or 6 years down the line.

So nobody can have a daughter they're proud of? Christ, when you read about a child being murdered by their own parents every other day then this sort of thing sounds lovely. It isn't bragging at all to say your child is loving and kind.

Wasn't she in the Investment section or Money Matters? Of course it's important to know what to do with money - far too many women on here are really ignorant of their finances. Being aware doesn't mean you're bragging.

tomatoandherbs · 03/05/2022 17:18

Exactly @HollowTalk

BrendaLee · 03/05/2022 17:25

When my son was looking at university courses I got told that it's easy for him, but it was so hard for this lady and her daughter...

"She's predicted all A*s so the choice is much harder"

Yeah. I feel your pain.

hatheris · 03/05/2022 17:31

"Its just soooo embarrassing being IDed as a 35 year old! lol!" - common humble brag

Normally if this happens to me it's less that I have youthful skin and more that I'm in the middle of a massive acne breakout.

Sometimes, I would like to have a nice night out without men harassing me

Wow. Harassment is something to brag about?

I was baffled by this one too. I had this conversation many times with other women in my younger days and I can assure you it was never a humble brag for any of us.

Yeah, I agree that the idea of bragging about being harassed is a bit odd. It's not something that people will envy, is it?

And it's not as if men are highly selective and choosy about who they harass - all it indicates is that you're visibly female. (And that the man is a complete arsehole.)

Yes, I spotted a splendid one on here last week but it's not the done thing to refer to other threads.

Feel free, all in the name of entertainment 😉

I think sometimes its the way things are said. The whole lemurgate sitch... was very flamboyant with the braggish laugh at full pelt, I think thats what shocked the keeper (who is a lemur expert and studied them in Madagascar) 😂

These are terrible but I have a few.

"I am worried Tabitha will not cope in her class at school as she is so advanced. Do you think I should ask to speak to her teacher?"

"Due to my dh's reduced leave, we are only travelling to Thailand for two weeks this year"

"Sometimes, I would like to have a nice night out without men harassing me"

"As a graduate, I was unsure which career to pursue as I am good at everything I put my hands to"

"My son does not eat Mcdonald's and prefers home cooked food" (big grin)

That graduate one is just cringe ....

I'm m just too good to choose 😂

"Or the threads here of ones complaining that they don't qualify for the 30 hours/tax free childcare because they earn over the threshold 😢

It's 100K NET, I think you'll be fine"

I wouldn't say that I was complaining with that thread, but definitely not bragging?! It was in the money section genuinely asking a question..... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also not really the point but it's gross not net

Kat1953 · 03/05/2022 17:59

sigh

You lot are all calling it humble bragging, its actually self-promotion.

Feckingfeck · 03/05/2022 18:01

Addicted2Kale · 03/05/2022 16:29

Five pages and counting of people failing to demonstrate the oxymoronic existence of "humble" bragging. WOW. You can claim anything here...

Partly why I started this thread as I don't really understand what it means. There are some great explanations hidden though 👍🏻 (if only there was a lemur emoji- a skunk is the closest I can get) 😢 🦨

OP - you get that the lemur example still wasn't a humblebrag, right? No matter how braggy her laugh was.

It just a plain old boast.

Yeah I'm good with that now... thanks 😂

I'm ND and usually a bit slow to pick up on bragging but it was so clear even I could see it 😂

There was one on MN recently though (been deleted now) something like... its such a pain and just so hard to choose books for DSS because he has the reading age of a 14 year old but is 10 😢

I DEFINITELY wasn't referring to you, I wasn't aware of the thread running it's just a common one on here.

Also isn't it adjusted net income? Isn't that different to gross?

To add to that I had a friend (who's a CF first and a humble bragger second) jump in a conversation with another friend to openly boast that she and her husband easily make it over the threshold...she has no children 🥴

Tabitha is usually staring vacantly at a wall of licking a plug socket.

😂😂

@Iknowthisdickhead

"Sometimes I wish something large would shit down her chimney. I’d like to see her spin that as a humble brag."

Oooh such a shame we live in a protected natural area that an eagle did its business down our chimney. Managed to stain the marble surround and splatter the 80 inch tv set, so much mess to clean up

And it would be my original Georgian chimney given personally to the Earl of Humblebrag by the Queen of Narnia as a commemorative gift! Why couldn’t the eagle have done that in one of my other five chimneys, further away from my Ming vases, which would have been so much more considerate to my housekeeper?

Fair enough.. it's taxable income so not net as in it's the amount before tax but it is adjusted to not include pension contributions so not really gross either I guess...

On the plus side I very much do have a child so slightly better than your friend I guess 😂
