Humble bragging

Feckingfeck · 03/05/2022 10:45

I have only come across this term on MN but i think I wintessed it first hand... whats it all about?

Family in lemur enclosure at zoo talking to keeper.

Keeper "you can get a little closer if you want"

Woman "we don't need too thanks we honey mooned in Madagascar so we have seen so many lemurs up close"

Keeper "oh okay, bet that was great"

Woman "it was amaaaazing... we could hear them all around our cabin at night aaaaahahahahhaha" (not sure why this was funny- but apparently it was hilarious)

Don't get me wrong I wasn't jealous in the slightest... nothing i would be creeped out by more than animals at night...

It just felt like one up man ship at its finest. I mean why go in there if you only want to belittle the experience Confused

Whats the worst humble brag you have witnessed?

Someone is currently asking for advice about what to do with a spare 150k 😀

I saw one of a Fb group yesterday:

'I'm getting a bit concerned as so many posters are struggling with their children sleeping. My baby sleeps 12 hours in the night and a few in the day. He's always been amazing at sleeping. Should I be worried that he's sleeping so well?'

It's not word for word but pretty much!

That is actually a worry if it’s a very young baby. You should say oh dear, maybe take her to the GP?

Mrpunchisagit · 03/05/2022 13:43

I really don’t get the issue. I don’t do it myself, I never post my personal life on social media but I just think oh that’s great good for you and give it no more thought.

the only time I’ve felt relatively irked was someone’s kid did something for charity and they both post about it repeatedly. Under the guise of trying to get others to do it, but I don’t think it’s really boasting more attention seeking in this case.

🤷‍♀️

TawnyPippit · 03/05/2022 13:44

Someone told me, with a rueful shake of their head, that they weren’t really able to make sushi as they found it very hard to cook the rice so that it was sticky - whatever they did their rice always came out beautifully dry and fluffy.

🙄

Mrpunchisagit · 03/05/2022 13:45

please don’t do this it’s horrible and will cause only concern for the parent, which it’s intent with thr “oh dear” . I can’t perceive why anyone would wish to worry a new parent like this.

Worst case just say I’m sure they are fine and don’t worry but if you are concerned ask your health visitor.

Because it is very concerning, no new baby should be sleeping for 12 hours!

Comfortablynumbertwo · 03/05/2022 13:52

DN posted a photo on FB of her car, saying goodbye to it/how wonderful it was but that she needed something much larger now the children were older. The photo was taken outside of the dealership where you could see her partner in the new car.

new babies can sleep up to 18 hours a day for gods sake.

Not in 12 hour stretches. Dear god, get yourself to the GP, you should not be anywhere near a baby

I have so much annual leave left to take, I can’t decide what to do with it. - from a person at work

Pancakesbeforesunset · 03/05/2022 13:59

They could've just said they've got experience with animals they didn't need to go into details, yes it was bragging

I’d be tempted to tell you her Instagram name but it would get her even more followers and she already thinks she’s ace without that. Sometimes I wish something large would shit down her chimney. I’d like to see her spin that as a humble brag.

Or the threads here of ones complaining that they don't qualify for the 30 hours/tax free childcare because they earn over the threshold 😢

It's 100K NET, I think you'll be fine

These are all bang on.

GrumpyTerrier · 03/05/2022 14:05

A girl I knew was once 'complaining' that she was so successful and in demand now that she didn't have time for all of the important things that people wanted her for. She had been specially invited to speak at some event because of her success, and how could she possibly find the time, woe is her etc. I said 'oh no my wallet is too small for my twenties and my diamond tiara is too tight' and she went mad at me and never spoke to me again. Oops.

Oooh such a shame we live in a protected natural area that an eagle did its business down our chimney. Managed to stain the marble surround and splatter the 80 inch tv set, so much mess to clean up

It's gross not net and tbf London nursery + London family home mortgage is quite enough to eat your take-home on 100k (hence why I don't live in London despite really wanting to).

chisanunian · 03/05/2022 14:22

Reminds me of something Alan Titchmarsh said he once overheard a discussion between to vair posh ladies at the Chelsea Flower Show:

Woman 1 "Do you have swans on your lake?"

Woman 2 "Only on the small one."

Beautifully done! A sadface at the end would have been too much.

Saw this one a while ago…..”Darling (child) is just too tired to do her homework this weekend after being invited to three sleepovers! I’m just going to let her read (obnoxiously intellectual book) instead and to hell with her teachers!”

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 03/05/2022 14:28

Buying organic food for my kids who eat everything is so expensive and it’s a real pressure cooking then new stuff as I know they’ll love trying new foods

Yes, and always about fizzy drinks and fast food

”my dd has been offered fizzy drinks but doesn’t like them, even at age 14 she’ll always choose water or organic milk”

“we took ds (15) to McDonald’s for a treat but he exclaimed it was “vile” and would much rather have my home made salmon and quinoa”

Easilystartled · 03/05/2022 14:31

Oh, and this one from the same person…..”does anyone have any present suggestions for (darling child’s) birthday? The only thing she has asked for is Harry Potter in Latin and an apron for when we bake together!!”

latetothefisting · 03/05/2022 14:32

I agree that most of these are just normal boasts rather than humble brags,or even stealth boasts.

Humble brags are when the person pretends not to have any personal accountability for the thing they are bragging about - often use the method of ostensibly thanking someone else for the subject of the "brag"

E.g. "so grateful to Mrs x for her hard work teaching little Johnny's class this year. Thanks to her encouragement he got a level 8 in English- the highest in the county. Thank you mrs x #bestteacher"

Or "I'm going to miss my work family at x company so much. You are so generous to grt me such lovely leaving presents (with pic of pile of expensive presents)."

"Huge thanks to the staff in #the Dorchester (or any other posh hotel/shop etc) for going the extra mile to make our stay special"

Stealth boasts are when they chuck in the subject of the brag/boast when the conversation is about something completely unrelated. Obvious example include "loving my new manicure" (photo of nails on a branded car steering wheel or holding a designer bag) or "can't wait for the holidays!" with a picture of passport and a boarding pass clearly posed to show luxurious destination and first class ticket...
