Just returned from a short break in Sandhurst,. We travelled around whilst we were there (Farnborough, Wokingham, Aldershot etc) and are so impressed how green the area is with wooded areas,.nature walks and trees everywhere. The towns are well presented and there are a lot of outdoor activities to choose from.
It is bank holiday weekend but none of the activities were crowded. We would definitely choose this area for a holiday again AIBU

John Nike in Bracknell is sadly closed, @KirstenBlest

KirstenBlest · 03/05/2022 13:58

I thought it might be. There are other JN snowcentres though. I had to look up Swadlincote

I have been to The Lookout

The suggestion of St Albans as the nearest city has added a new level of surrealism to this thread...

I live near Swadlincote. It’s even more of a shithole than Aldershite.

There's a big hotel in Sandhurst - sadly the accomodation doesn't live up to the exterior but the activities programme is very full. Quite popular with the Royals.....

I stayed in that hotel once in my younger life. In the morning an angry burst into the room and told my boyfriend off for bringing a pet home... definitely do not recommend for a casual stay 😜

I mean, as the crow flies there's a place on the way that I'm trying to think of the name of. I believe it used to be called Londinium? Not sure whether it's still there.

Of course, if you want to go the other way to a Near-As-Dammit-A-City-Honest-Please-Give-Us-City-Status, there's always Reading...

Reading as a holiday destination? Have you actually been there?

It is definitely not a city, it's a town with a large urban sprawl

Aldershot for a holiday? WTF do you live? Swindon?

Next year; Northampton including the Treacle Mines at Duston

newnamethanks · 03/05/2022 16:21

I feel a new reality programme coming on. 'Absolutely Aldershot'. Yes, why not? Applicants line-up here please.

As someone who is familiar with going up and down the M3, Winchester isn't 'just down the M3', or it is but it's quite a hike

i've been to Aldershite times and completely failed to spot its tourist destination potential

I used to live near Sandhurst, never even thought of going to St Albans as it's round the M25, but went to Winchester many times, down the M3. Much easier after they built the M3 down to the M27 than before. I used to commute regularly to Southampton so I'm probably used to driving longer distances and so think Winchester isn't that far - less than an hour's drive, and just off the M3 (as is Sandhurst)

Maybe Yeovil and Bridgwater the year after?

Don't be horrid about Reading. Spent an hour trying to escape their town centre one-way some years ago and swore never to return. I've succeeded. Not everyone escapes. Be kind.

Good warm up for escaping Basingstoke

Don't mention the IDR. There was once a thread on here about moving to Reading which deleted because it became too heated.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 05/05/2022 10:26

And Sandhurst is??

The IDR is ...well...it's a test as to how much you want to leave or enter Reading. Lanes that disappear off up a slip road, merge and unmerge again within the space of 5 yards - it's survival of the fittest not helped by Reading's lane markings having mysteriously disappeared and I know people who drive in central London who avoid the IDR. I'm intrigued as to how a thread about it got so heated it had to be deleted though! Grin

PowerfulWombSpaceRespector · 05/05/2022 10:34

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin I think it went along the lines of "should I move to Reading?" Followed by lots of yes or no answers, then someone mentioned the IDR as an example of how shit Reading is, people defended Reading, people attempted to defend the IDR (I know, right?) OP flounced, bunfight ensued.
