There are active two threads on this in Feminism but I feel I just have to update here for traffic. Although protests appear to have, for now, stopped the theatre production going ahead, new and highly disturbing material has today appeared on their webpage, clearly aimed at children. It (cheerily and breezily) suggests, among other things, that children search for images of masturbating animals on the internet and then draw what they see. I am not going to Google that term, I really don't want that in my history, but first, can you imagine what children will be exposed to if they search that, and second, this is pure and simple grooming of children into being abused. Masturbating animals? What larks! Lets have an arts and crafts session about it! Next steps: Masturbating with Uncle Jim? Why not? Masturbating Uncle Jim? Of course!

I have now made a complaint to CEOP. Others may wish to as well.

Have the press been informed about all of this ? And other media eg the BBC for example ? A large spotlight needs to be shone on this crap happening in plain sight

theDudesmummy · 19/04/2022 19:58

The BBC and the Guardian have reported on this and entirely missed the point, and the danger.

They’ve not said to find pictures of animals masturbating.
They’ve said that it’s very normal as every animal does it (so it’s natural) and to google it.
Then to draw the animal - not draw the animal masturbating.

I'm profoundly grateful that 5 year olds' comprehension is so pin sharp given that the average literacy level of adults in the UK is estimated to be that of a 12 year old.

I am a little concerned about the 5 year olds and up who do tend to use voice search for images rather than reading material or who are doing this with an adult who has not engaged "safe search" on the browser. And there's been a substantial growth in apps that read web pages to people, including children.

Voice search is now a common part of many interfaces on traditional computers, connected home speakers, and mobile devices. Smartphones and tablet computers in particular have become ubiquitous in the lives of American children. According to a report from Common Sense Media (Rideout, 2017), almost all (98%) American children now live in a home with a tablet or smartphone, and this trend includes low-income families adopting technology at similar rates (Kabali et al., 2015). Unlike keyboards and mice, touch screens are immediately intuitive and operated with gestures such as pointing and swiping, which develop in the first year of life. Indeed, children aged 12 to 17 months are able to navigate simple tablet-based applications with moderate ability (Hourcade et al., 2015).

While text-based Internet search results might not be accessible to pre- and emerging readers, the explosive growth of online video content supports young children’s ability to independently find and consume online information. Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s Chief Business Officer, predicted at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show that by 2020, 90% of Internet traffic would be used by video, a prediction later anticipated by Cisco to 2019 (Tribbey, 2016). Google search results come with a video tab, from which children can choose a video based on a representative picture, press the play button and watch a video related to their query. Thus, this dramatic shift in young children’s ability to search online is due to both the prevalence of voice-based, natural language search features and the increasing volume of video-based search results.

This shift in children’s ability to find information through connected devices makes it important to understand their changing conceptions of digital devices as sources of information and how they might fare as they attempt to use them to find answers to their questions. However, research has yet to understand the behaviors of young children using voice search. By young children, here, we refer to children who are able to speak fully formed sentences but have yet to learn how to read and write with enough fluency to perform internet searches by typing, typically between the ages of 3 and 6 years.

I think there’s an argument that current sex education (though actually I think the DfE statutory PSHE curriculum is quite sensible and decent), could have a greater and more traditionally feminist emphasis on body positivity and normal sexual experience, including being a lot more robust about teaching children the right names for their anatomy, being factual and dismantling taboos around female pleasure, critiquing porn, emphasising consent and personal boundaries, and making kids more aware of challenging sexual harassment and so on.

However, this stuff is emphatically not that. It’s very definitely not positive, healthy and appropriate sex education. Their promotional material makes that very clear.

It’s also, tellingly, got that wide-eyed, faux-“educational” disingenuous tone that I automatically distrust when I hear it from any of the gender ideology/pro sex industry posters on here or on Twitter or whatever.

It’s that “hi kids!” tone that announces that some kind of untruth is being smuggled in (in this case not very well hidden at all, but it’s the same tone of faux reasonableness that pops up when someone’s explaining how webcamming is just so empowering for women, or how it’s just so important that men must always be made to feel “comfortable”). It always seems to appear when we’re being asked to believe that no boundaries are being crossed and there’s nothing to see here, no nothing at all…

This is a bit misleading of you OP.

They’ve said that it’s very normal as every animal does it (so it’s natural) and to google it.
Then to draw the animal - not draw the animal masturbating.

I think it’s very important to stick only to facts if you want to make a genuine complaint.

Do you have a link to the actual website?
I want to know what age range this is for.

I like how they’re normalising masturbation as for years it’s been something to be ashamed of especially for females.

However this should be aimed at teens and definitely not young children.

And THAT is exactly the sort of Jesuitical shit that paedophiles and their ilk like to hide behind. Oh no, we didn't say look for an animal masturbating, we just said, think of an animal that MIGHT masturbate and then look for a picture of it. You found a photo of a woman wanking off a dog? Well, its not what we told you to look for but did you LIKE the picture when you saw it?

I'm going full Mary Whitehouse on this stuff. I'd rather be a prude than an enabler.

I believe there’s also advice on googling homosexuality in other species along with suggested sites where the different ways they have sex can be observed. Why isn’t someone stopping this ?
lamujerenfadada · 19/04/2022 20:02

Yes but this show was aimed at 5 year olds upwards. It in not appropriate in the slightest to mention masturbation to 5 year olds. You do not need to be a safeguarding expert to know this is a massive red flag.

Shortpoet · 19/04/2022 20:04

They also link to a site that tells you how to make genitals out of play doh. Remember they say their content is suitable for ages 5 and up.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/04/2022 20:04

They're just delusional woke morons with a mandate to preach talentless crap to your kids.

No, they know exactly what they are doing and who benefits from them doing it and it sure as hell isn't children.

EmmaH2022 · 19/04/2022 20:07

Agree with Vest
These people know exactly what they're doing.

ZeroTrees · 19/04/2022 20:07

@theDudesmummy

We all know who benefits from all of this. They now call themselves "MAPs" and claim to be a vulnerable minority group, but we know them...
The promotion of the queer label, which is becoming an umbrella term for LGBT+++ 'identities' is part of this effort IMO.

Soon enough MAP will be an added + and because LGBT people will be happily referring to themselves as queer no-one will be able to challenge anything that comes under the queer umbrella.

This is why we increasing see posts from people who say they're queer. It's a concerted effort to normalise the term and add more and more dubious sexual identities to the LGBT+++++++++++.

StScholastica · 19/04/2022 20:08
I am utterly horrified by this, and equally disgusted by the BBC's reporting on it, which makes the opposition to the show sound like Mary Whitehouse pearl-clutchers

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-61149449
Let's not forget that the BBC employed many a paedophile.

Their website is down at the moment - I tried to post the link. The facts are that the age range is stated as five years and upwards. A five year old watching strangers stripping off and talking about masturbation. How is that suitable for any child and how is this approach ‘normalising’ anything. The fact that it’s aimed at such young children is bad enough, but I can’t imagine any teenager thinking it’s normal to sit in an audience next to their parents and watch this stuff.

Absolutely 100% spot on

VestaTilley · 19/04/2022 20:17

Jesus, it’s abominable. I tweeted at the local MPs. Glad to hear it’s not going ahead, but how was it even allowed in the first place??

What have the local Council said? Will they be putting on this “production” elsewhere? It’s just grooming- how does nobody see this?!

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 19/04/2022 20:19

Will they be putting on this “production” elsewhere? It’s just grooming- how does nobody see this?!

Earlier today they're claiming that they will be staging it for an "invited audience" at Bath.

From the zine, copied and pasted, so - verbatim:

'If some of your pleasures are sexual, are there any sexual practices you might like to try?'

'In the show, we mention masturbation.

All kinds of animals masturbate - not just humans! Use the internet to find some examples of other animals that masturbate.

Why don't you draw the animals you’ve found?'

KittenKong · 19/04/2022 20:23

I’d go spare if someone taught my DS that the word q was in any way acceptable.

His auntie, her GF, his cousin and her wife would all be incredible offended and hurt if he used that word in front of them - and worse still, used it in reference to a flipping straight person married to a person of the opposite sex desperately trying to look ‘hip’ and ‘interesting’.

Dinosauria · 19/04/2022 20:24

I'd rather be a prude than an enabler

DomesticatedZombie · 19/04/2022 20:24

Use the internet to find some examples of other animals that masturbate.

I take that as a direct instruction to google 'animals that masturbate' and I can't see how else it can be taken.

I have searched this exact term.

With google and safe search, the results were many pictures of animals masturbating.

With duckduckgo and no filter, the results were many pictures of illegal acts.

Neither of these internet searches were suitable for five year olds.

ZeroTrees · 19/04/2022 20:24

It's not just a problem for 5 year olds, I doubt this shit is suitable for any person under 16. It's obscene, manipulative and batshit. Sadly there are many people with some level of authority in academia, especially in the public health sector who have extremely wrapped ideas about children and sex positivity. I attend many lectures on public health due to my job and academics love to deny modern slavery (the problem is exaggerated by the media allegedly), the damage that FGM does to girls (any effort to tackle this is framed as racist/colonial) and to ridicule the notion that children are vulnerable to exploitation by definition (it's apparently a simplistic cliche that they are vulnerable). This sort of shot is enabled by very established and weirdly reputable academics in the UK.

QueenSue · 19/04/2022 20:25

How fucking dare they.
