to think Easter stuff should be in the shops

till, well, it's actually been Easter? Just popped to Home Bargains and they are already clearing the shelves of all the Easter stuff. I wanted some mini eggs to do chocolate nests with DD and there wasn't any in sight of any variety!

I'm sure not that long ago seasonal stock stayed in the shops at least till the festival/event was over. When my DC were little, and they're only teens, I'would pick up the odd bargain after Christmas, Easter etc. Now, it seems like all trace of it is wiped out to make way for the next thing.

From a technical/Christian point of view, it's not even Easter until Sunday is it? We're still in Lent.

Surely eggs are pagen rather Christian. Lots of shops are closed on Easter Sunday and it makes sense for shops to stock just the right amount so they don’t have to discount easter stock.

IcedOatLatte · 13/04/2022 18:02

If there aren't any eggs surely it's because they've sold out, it dosnt make any sense to be taking chocolate eggs off the shelves. Did you ask if that's what they done?

saggyhairyass · 13/04/2022 18:03

I don't think it's being cleared. My local shoos are selling out. I bought Easter eggs for my family two weeks ago.

CurbsideProphet · 13/04/2022 18:04

My nearest supermarket is a small Sainsburys that is full of Easter eggs / Easter related chocolate.

pastypirate · 13/04/2022 18:04

They sold out if Easter eggs last year everywhere we bought ours ages ago

mrsgcway · 13/04/2022 18:05

I think they sell out in the week running up to easter. Which isn’t lent but holy week.

dudsville · 13/04/2022 18:06

I do think shops are stocking now according to shoppers habits. We aren't shopping in stores as much. They don't want to take a loss.

AnnaSW1 · 13/04/2022 18:07

There's a thread about this every year. People buy early

VyeBrator · 13/04/2022 18:07

Morrisons have loads.

But to be honest, if buy Easter related stuff is important to you, you've left it a bit late considering a lot of shops will be closed on Good Friday.

Sparklingbrook · 13/04/2022 18:10

Everyone knows to buy Easter eggs as early as possible because shops won't have any left by Easter. They won't want any left over and will be preparing the space for other things (BBQ stuff and more summery things). It's good business.

HedgehogToes · 13/04/2022 18:10

This happened in my local Aldi last year. Clearing the shelves of the Easter chocolate during holy week. I bought DCs eggs as soon as they came in the shops this year.

Flippydip · 13/04/2022 18:16

Really? I'm planning to go out and buy all our Easter stuff tomorrow. I expected shops would be filling up their stock ready for Easter weekend. No easter eggs for our family if this is the case.

OfstedOffred · 13/04/2022 18:16

Its stock management.

Shops try and avoid over stocking then discounting. They also know that people worrying things will run out accelerated purchases, people buy more and buy earlier to avoid missing out. Its very psychological and they do it because we play straight into their hands.

greenlynx · 13/04/2022 18:16

I think people are buying earlier now, we’ve haven’t bought straight away and then were unwell and now the eggs I wanted are sold out. I will survive of course but lesson’s learnt.

user1471538283 · 13/04/2022 18:18

I got caught out with Easter eggs last year so I bought some a month ago. It is a bit mad that Easter eggs were in the shops on New Years day!

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 18:19

I've got actual Easter eggs. It was just a whim as I was wandering the aisles for something else. They were definitely clearing the shelves of Easter 'stuff' maybe the eggs were sold out. There were lots in my local asda yesterday. Just a trend I've noticed - maybe just shops being more efficient in their buying.

It's not particularly important, I just wondered when things had changed as certainly about 10 years ago, when my DC were little I used to buy stuff in post 'festival' sales for the following year.

I noticed in October too as we'd seen some Halloween stuff we fancied, didn't buy it then had to isolate til about the 20th. By the time we were free there was nothing in the shops except Christmas stuff.

It would be unusual to stock up with just a few days to go. Many shops are hoping to shift what they already have as they won't want to be left with excess stock
Libertaire · 13/04/2022 18:21

My local mega-Tesco had only a couple of shelves of Easter eggs left at lunchtime today. They were filling the gaps in the ‘seasonal’ aisle with gardening stuff. Shame, I was hoping to pick some up at half price on Monday.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 18:22

I obviously didn't buy Easter Eggs for the following year! Just decorations and stuff like that!

OP posts:
linerforlife · 13/04/2022 18:26

I've literally just got home from Home Bargains. A whole aisle of Easter stuff and no sign of it being removed here! I was in tesco earlier too and they had a dedicated Easter aisle too and Easter eggs all over the store.

Ringmaster27 · 13/04/2022 18:26

@MrsDeaconClaybourne Yes, I had the rage around Halloween last year. Had planned a party for my DCs and some of their friends. Underestimated my need for fake cobwebs/spider/small decorations. Tried to get some from both B&M and Home Bargains 4 or 5 days before the 31st bf was met with empty shelves and mountains of Christmas stuff being unpacked and put in its place.

CythereaGraye · 13/04/2022 18:26

There seems to be a lack of mini eggs this year- last week I had to look in 3 shops to find some, and today looked in B&M, tesco and Poundland to no avail.

Eventually found a lovely but v expensive tin of mini eggs in Wilko but it was the only one left, and no individual packets.

Roselilly36 · 13/04/2022 18:27

We got caught like this last year, just moved house, waited till just before Easter, only managed to find a couple of Eggs after going to multiple stores. Made sure we bought early this year.

Legoisthebest · 13/04/2022 18:30

In recent years (even before covid) retailers have cut back massively on stock levels for holiday products - especially the amount of Easter Eggs. They often had high amounts of products left and people would then wait until Easter Monday (or Boxing Day etc) to buy them 'cheap'.
Now retailers prefer to have sold out by a few days before the event having sold the stock at full price. Retailers need all the money they can get these days.

Lincslady53 · 13/04/2022 18:33

@mrsgcway

I think they sell out in the week running up to easter. Which isn’t lent but holy week.
Lent ends on Maundy Thursday, April 14th thus year, so yes it is Holy Week but it is also Lent.
