to think Easter stuff should be in the shops

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 17:53

till, well, it's actually been Easter? Just popped to Home Bargains and they are already clearing the shelves of all the Easter stuff. I wanted some mini eggs to do chocolate nests with DD and there wasn't any in sight of any variety!

I'm sure not that long ago seasonal stock stayed in the shops at least till the festival/event was over. When my DC were little, and they're only teens, I'would pick up the odd bargain after Christmas, Easter etc. Now, it seems like all trace of it is wiped out to make way for the next thing.

From a technical/Christian point of view, it's not even Easter until Sunday is it? We're still in Lent.

Easter is pretty nothing to do with Christians until they co-opted it, eggs rabbits guess what its a fertility festival.

The name comes from a pagan godess Ä’ostre.

Againstmachine · 13/04/2022 20:12

People want less food waste but expect stores to stock until last minute just in case, it's upto people to get there shit together.

celticprincess · 13/04/2022 20:13

The supermarkets seem to have plenty but the discount stores seem to have sold their stock and rearranged their shelves. I went in yesterday for some egg hunt things as I've not had a child free day to do it til now and the places I was hoping for cheaper items were out of stock. Went over to Asda and sainsburys and they had plenty - although the poor Asda shelf stacked couldn't seem to stack the shelves quick enough as they just kept getting taken.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 20:28

My shit is thoroughly together this year actually! I have Easter eggs in the cupboard that DH bought several weeks ago; all the stuff for Sunday lunch delivered today and enough ingredients left from Christmas to bake a simnel cake if I decide I can be bothered!

However, I was surprised that, after saying to DD, while in Home Bargains, let's get some mini eggs and we'll make nests like when you were little, there were no mini eggs to be had! And it got me thinking! (Yes I do have other things to worry about but I only work term time and was having a quiet day!)

Aldi had fuckloads of Easter eggs this morning. Dunno about mini eggs, but I don't think you can reasonably expect them to have such a specific type of Easter sweets available.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 20:59

Just been in my local mini Sainsburys and pleased to report they not only have tonnes of mini eggs but also reduced Easter Eggs Grin

If they keep moudly old Easter Eggs on their shelves when it's the middle of April where are they going to put the fireworks?

It's just common sense, got to keep moving on... Grin

They were definitely clearing the shelves of Easter 'stuff' maybe the eggs were sold out.

Why would they clear the shelves OP?

BakewellGin1 · 13/04/2022 21:15

Our Home Bargains have sold out of eggs and Asda/Morrisons only have larger eggs.
£1 eggs that we get in for the family kids are limited to Mini Egg ones.

I say it every year but next year they will be bought as soon as they are in stock/on offer and stored away.

latetothefisting · 13/04/2022 21:16

I think they have definitely got a lot more organised in the last few years with stock control. I remember they used to always sell off the remaining easter eggs cheap from easter monday/tuesday. Last year I gave up chocolate for lent so easter monday I was in tesco ready to get a haul of mini eggs, and nothing, the whole aisle had been completely cleared!

LubaLuca · 13/04/2022 21:30

It was slim pickings in Aldi yesterday, and the same in Waitrose today. I got the last two packets of Mini Eggs in the shop today, and the only eggs left were the big fancy ones.

I think they're getting better at stocking as much as they need so they don't end up having to sell off loads at half price next week.

Why would they clear the shelves OP?

Maybe they were consolidating stuff into a smaller space like a PP said. But it definitely looked like they were taking stuff off and putting new summer stuff out. There were some bare shelves too. It was gone 5pm so maybe just starting before they closed.

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

I've got actual Easter eggs. It was just a whim as I was wandering the aisles for something else. They were definitely clearing the shelves of Easter 'stuff' maybe the eggs were sold out. There were lots in my local asda yesterday. Just a trend I've noticed - maybe just shops being more efficient in their buying.

It's not particularly important, I just wondered when things had changed as certainly about 10 years ago, when my DC were little I used to buy stuff in post 'festival' sales for the following year.

I noticed in October too as we'd seen some Halloween stuff we fancied, didn't buy it then had to isolate til about the 20th. By the time we were free there was nothing in the shops except Christmas stuff.

I understand your perspectives op, I think from a corporate perspectives, it's to be ahead rather than behind on the items.
Jamboree01 · 13/04/2022 21:43

@mrsgcway

I think they sell out in the week running up to easter. Which isn’t lent but holy week.
Holy Week is the final week of Lent
Topbird29 · 13/04/2022 21:45

@Flippydip - bit random, but our local garden centre had loads of easter eggs at weekend - might be worth a try if you have one near you and no luck elsewhere.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 13/04/2022 21:54

By mine mini eggs are a distant memory, i got the very last pack in Tesco the other day after trying 9 other shops first. I have all my Easter eggs like you op but i wanted a pack of mini eggs to decorate an Easter cake i've decided to bake on Saturday. I didn't expect to have to go to 10 shops to finally find a pack Grin I'll definitely be more prepared on the mini egg front next year as i've had my eggs and other Easter bits since late February Blush
Glad you have found some tonight, have a lovely Easter and enjoy making the Easter nest cakes.

Figmentofimagination · 13/04/2022 22:09

I've got all this from a reputable source (cough DH cough) about Home Bargains.

They never want any eggs left over on easter Monday as they would have to reduce them and they don't reduce items unless the item is damaged or close to its use by date. They are already a bargain store so they never do sales.

Anything that isn't food will just be stored in the back ready for next year. They do the same for other celebrations/holidays. So when Christmas starts coming out it will be last years stock first before they get deliveries of the new stuff.

Also, they had a message from head office on Monday that no more Easter products will be delivered. So what is on the shelf is what is left.

And yes, they do get told to take down the products relating to that occasion/celebration etc before it is over. On Mother's Day they took down the Mother's Day products and started getting out Father's Day. Christmas usually disappears on Christmas Eve.

But you didn't hear it from me 🤫

justasking111 · 13/04/2022 22:20

All those kinder eggs bought early only to find them withdrawn from sale because of salmonella must have caused some last minute buying this year

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 22:23

That makes perfect sense Figment thank you. I think my OP made me sound far more put out and shocked that I actually was. It was more like it made me realise there'd be a change I'd not noticed in the last few years and I wondered when it had happened. It coincides with the massive rise of shops like Home Bargains and B and M which also makes sense.

Happy Easter to you too Howabsolutely Glad you also got your mini eggs. I just need to hide mine or put a note on them so DS1 (16) doesn't eat them on one of his midnight kitchen raids!

Yes definitely a few years ago there would be loads of seasonal stuff left on sale after Easter, Christmas etc. I used to pick up lots in the John Lewis sale which would go on for weeks after Christmas; and Sainsbury’s and Thornton’s would be piled high with discounted eggs after Easter. I’ve definitely noticed that it doesn’t happen as much now - shops seem to have tighter stock control and order less seasonal stuff in so that hardly any is left over, if anything.

I first noticed this happening about five years ago, but it’s definitely got even more the case after Covid and I guess margins are leaner and stock control is increasingly better computerised/organised.

Calandor · 13/04/2022 23:30

They're everywhere in the shops near me

Calandor · 13/04/2022 23:33

@Legoisthebest

In recent years (even before covid) retailers have cut back massively on stock levels for holiday products - especially the amount of Easter Eggs. They often had high amounts of products left and people would then wait until Easter Monday (or Boxing Day etc) to buy them 'cheap'. Now retailers prefer to have sold out by a few days before the event having sold the stock at full price. Retailers need all the money they can get these days.
'These days' supermarkets have had record sales over the last two years 😂 They're making a fortune
Tumbleweed101 · 13/04/2022 23:38

I'm late buying Easter eggs this year. Hoping to pick some up tomorrow when I go into town. I've been busy or unwell last couple weeks so not had a chance. Fortunately I have older children now so not doing easter bunny etc these days.

When my eldest two were small (23 and 21 now) we were poor and always got them extra easter eggs the days following easter at reduced prices. Can't do that now :( .

breakdown19 · 13/04/2022 23:41

@Libertaire

My local mega-Tesco had only a couple of shelves of Easter eggs left at lunchtime today. They were filling the gaps in the ‘seasonal’ aisle with gardening stuff. Shame, I was hoping to pick some up at half price on Monday.
It's so annoying
