to think Easter stuff should be in the shops

till, well, it's actually been Easter? Just popped to Home Bargains and they are already clearing the shelves of all the Easter stuff. I wanted some mini eggs to do chocolate nests with DD and there wasn't any in sight of any variety!

I'm sure not that long ago seasonal stock stayed in the shops at least till the festival/event was over. When my DC were little, and they're only teens, I'would pick up the odd bargain after Christmas, Easter etc. Now, it seems like all trace of it is wiped out to make way for the next thing.

From a technical/Christian point of view, it's not even Easter until Sunday is it? We're still in Lent.

i always buy them last minute

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/04/2022 18:40

I've noticed shops are stocking a lot less 'holiday' stuff and there isn't loads of clearance stock after the holiday with shelves pretty empty the day before. I think this is actually really good as it must have caused so much waste before.

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 18:43

@Ringmaster27 that was our experience too! We were isolating for DH's birthday so promised DD we could do something nice for Halloween. As soon as we were free I took her shopping and there was just the odd, sad skeleton or spider on the end of an aisle and everyone filling up for Christmas. Think we manged to find stuff in Asda in the end!

Easter eggs go on sale very early January where l work. That's over three months, yet every single year we have customers "astounded" that we are low on stock or out of stock a few days before Easter. Customers leave it to the last minute thinking they will get a reduction, where as retailers have wisened up.

SaxendaSummer · 13/04/2022 18:46

if you knew it all sold out quickly for halloween then why do you expect it to still be there for easter?

its how seasonal stock works

same where i work! we need the space...for the summer stock
MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 18:51

I'm not astounded at all. I'm just curious- there did used to be loads left and you could buy them really cheaply the week after Easter. Obviously this isn't good for retailers so I understand why it doesn't happen. I just wondered when it had changed as I've just noticed it more in the last few months.

I also understand the point about not leaving stuff til the last minute but I don't want to have to buy Easter Eggs in January. Not everyone has the space or the money to do that. I do think it adds to a sort of social stress to keep moving on the next event.

Yes, this happens every year and I have been caught out more than once. Quite often I go to visit my parents on Easter Sunday and want to pop in on the Saturday to get them something and it's all gone. I get they don't want to overstock but they must be missing quite a few customers who would spend money in the run up to Easter.

katseyes7 · 13/04/2022 18:54

I work in a supermarket. We've had Easter eggs since January.
Stocked and restocked god knows how many times. If there aren't any left now, it's because people have bought them up.
I've just been to Asda. They have Easter eggs, but not a full range. No small ones left, for example.

Ponderingwindow · 13/04/2022 18:55

Stores are stocking less. When inventory gets low enough, they clear they shelves, possibly moving to a clearance area, so they can put out something they have in stock.

In our town they ran out of Halloween candy about a week before Halloween last year.

One craft/home store had hardly any Christmas stock and those stores tend to switch to Christmas early. I was in a week after Christmas and they had shelves and shelves of it all marked 80% off. I asked the clerk if they got the shipment after Christmas and sure enough, that is what happened. They tried to order less overall and time it just perfectly, but ended up not getting it in time.

@MrsDeaconClaybourne

It's less than 48 hours til Good Friday. YABVU to complain about not being able to get 'Easter stuff.' It's been around for 2 months!

It's the same as the people who complain there is no advent calenders left on the 30th November after complaining they've been on sale since October 1st.
Gowithme · 13/04/2022 19:09

The thing is people don't want to buy seasonal stuff three months in advance, they want to buy it at some point during the week before the actual day.

ohidoliketobe · 13/04/2022 19:10

Are you sure they weren't just condensing the displays down as the stock starts to run low rather than clearing the shelves?

RelentlessStress · 13/04/2022 19:13

Absolutely loads of Easter eggs in our local Tesco when I was there a couple of hours ago. Thousands!!

To pick up on another point, I think I sort of knew that Lent ends on Maundy Thursday- so is that when my Lenten fast should end? I always assumed it ended on Easter Sunday but now not sure why.

painauraisin · 13/04/2022 19:18

Agreed, my house is already cluttered with kids stuff. I don't need Easter Eggs hanging around for three months (with the DC desperate to eat them).
MrsDeaconClaybourne · 13/04/2022 19:25

I'm not really complaining. Probably should have gone for Chat rather than AIBU! I have indeed, bought and eaten, several bags of mini eggs between now and Christmas Blush

But I did think I would be able to get them today to do actual Easter things with for actual Easter. Maybe people like me are the problem and that's why there's none left!

I wondered the same about ending the fast Relentless I've always assumed it was Sunday. Not that I've fasted this year (hence the egg consumption!)

There is something nice though about doing seasonal stuff close to the time, not ages in advance.

@Duracellbunnywannabe

Surely eggs are pagen rather Christian. Lots of shops are closed on Easter Sunday and it makes sense for shops to stock just the right amount so they don’t have to discount easter stock.

Yeah, all the Pagans will have bought them.

Hmm
Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 13/04/2022 19:28

They often sell out of mini eggs at Easter, I’ve noticed this for years.

I do however think they might need to actually supply more eggs to meet the demand.

We made chocolate nests with enchanted eggs this year - they looked very pretty.

HermioneWeasley · 13/04/2022 19:31

Shops don’t want to be stuck with a load of stock that they have to mark down on Easter Monday - they want to sell out.

PeachCottonTree · 13/04/2022 19:33

I think everywhere is just buying less stock so they have less they need to reduce. I found it really hard to find Cadbury’s Mini Eggs in stock at a variety of shops today and the supermarket had sold out of Rice Krispies, cornflakes & even coco pops as everyone must be planning to make chocolate nests!

Caspianberg · 13/04/2022 19:34

It would never occur to me to buy Easter stuff in January. Easter is this Sunday, I picked up Ds some little eggs for a hunt a few days ago fine

whataloadabullocks · 13/04/2022 20:02

Oh dear well that's us stuffed then because I buy it on Saturday or I eat it allGrin

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/04/2022 20:04

I agree, OP. I can't buy them in advance because I would definitely eat them.

M&S always have loads last minute.

Sparklingbrook · 13/04/2022 20:06

If any shops have eggs left at this point you can tell the ones that aren't very popular and nobody wanted.
