Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

This is just such a load of complete and utter bullshit. I'm really surprised that people are thick enough to fall for it.

iheartmybeachhut · 10/04/2022 18:27

Clapping for the n.h.s did sod all too, people still complain about it, and no I didn't clap either.

@Topseyt - so what’s the plan then ? What is the intelligent response to the mayhem proposed, this winter when apparently people want to be able to afford to heat the food, their homes and eat.
bellac11 · 10/04/2022 18:31

@Chely

Why on earth would you need the oven to tell you the time? I swith that off at the mains after every use.
Cant use the timer on it if the clock isnt on and working

On the main issue of this 'plan', nearly everything we have is located in a cupboard, behind the appliance itself, behind furniture. I would have to ruck up all the rugs to try to move furniture out to get down to the plugs or move the washing machine, dishwasher, oven

For what purpose again??

iheartmybeachhut · 10/04/2022 18:33

Doing this isn't going to achieve anything so why bother ? I'm sure as heck not doing it. Complete hysterical drama, the ng won't crash, blow up or be affected. The systems are designed to work with power surges when required, has anyone considered christmas day use when everyone is cooking their lunch?

lightisnotwhite · 10/04/2022 18:34

I’m not sure I get it either.
The fact most by necessity will be using less ( or will get cut off shortly through non payment ) will impact providers in the long run.

Mandyjack · 10/04/2022 18:34

@Newnormal99

No idea if Spain ever did this or not and double it cases powers usage to change in anyway but cannot imagine it would make any difference whatsoever.
I read on twitter that part isn't even true. As it's all over social media the companies will be ready for it
SpaceFarce · 10/04/2022 18:35

A quarter would be £115k+ per 10 minutes. Enough to make any of the big 6 feel queezy.

This might be my favourite thing I’ve read all day Grin The ‘big six’ (actually five) made £1,248,000,000,000 in 2020. A couple of hundred grand is quite literally pocket change.

Phase two is bullshit (how many homes lost power during the big storms last winter? And how many transformers exploded?

And we’re the ones with small minds. Excellent Grin

SpaceFarce · 10/04/2022 18:36

That was profit alone, by the way. 1.25 trillion.

Crispynoodle · 10/04/2022 18:37
@Pinchoftruth this was angle in posting, to generate debate in the idea rather than consider the actual act of me turning my leccy off for 10 minutes.

I work in the social science (sociology field) so I am really interested (although not a journalist posing on here) in how groups of people react to such things.

I am all for power of the people and strongly believe that there is power in numbers.

It is a shame that others fail to see the bigger picture other than ‘I won’t immediately benefit therefore it’s not worth my time’ this type of thing relies on the masses ‘giving it a go because doing nothing is worse’.

Of course some people (the old, vulnerable, on medical appliances) shouldn’t take part if there is a risk to them, but they are also the most likely to suffer with the rising costs.

And finally, just because it’s on social media doesn’t always mean it’s bull shit. I pretty much guarantee most people get their news, updates, stay connected via social media. The government rely on people thinking that social media is all lies.

If it was on the news would people do it?
I'm in! My hubby is a sociologist too! Silent revolution

@bellac11 you could just flick the main switch on the consumer board that are literally take you one second.

Nope, Have to move a massive heavy wardrobe under the stairs to get to the consumer unit, have to take all the shoes and coats out first to get to it

Moving that thing is emergencies only - which thankfully we have not yet had

Changednamesorry · 10/04/2022 18:43

Let me tell you as someone who lives in Spain - Spain didn't do this and our electricity prices are sky high.

Like my boyfriend has been paying 250 euros for electricity a month for a one bedroom flat with no central heating.

Mirw · 10/04/2022 18:44

Only works if everyone gets their power from the same company. Otherwise the power companies will sit and laugh! If the Tory government (M Thatcher and Co) hadn't privatised gas, electricity and water, we wouldn't be in this mess now. Ask Boris to re nationalise...

Nothappyatwork · 10/04/2022 18:45

@bellac11 - personally I’d be making sure you can get to the consumer unit without needing to move a big wardrobe no matter what you decide to do tonight that doesn’t sound like a ideal scenario.

Well we've lived here for 12 years, Im in no rush to change it, no where else to store our coats and shoes.

FloraPostePosts · 10/04/2022 18:48

@LemonJuiceFromConcentrate

Transformers would explode with the sudden influx of electricity not being used, power cables would burst into flames, coal and nuclear power stations would have to be shut down, only to be turned back on later, (all with huge costs)

Oh well, now you’re talking. Let’s definitely make all of that happen, sounds very productive

Yeah, I agree, this sounds like a great way to lower the costs of providing us with energy… 🙄
TabithaTittlemouse · 10/04/2022 18:50

People are so gullible

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 10/04/2022 18:52

I'll be in bed and hopefully asleep by then.
I will not be turning off my freezers just because "spain" did. 🏖

Oh, about the oven clock (and microwave) they're turned off at the wall when not in use anyway, why do you need multiple clocks in your kitchen??

nannygoat50 · 10/04/2022 18:56

Can’t see any point . It won’t make a difference apart from a big surge when people put it back on and it will probably cos a blackout !!!!

Svara · 10/04/2022 18:57

Out of interest, do you know why I have a regional water supplier with the same unit rate as my neighbours, but for gas and electric we can be with different companies and on different variable or fixed rates? I mean it's all the same power from the same place?
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/04/2022 18:57

I'm going to be out at 10:00 pm on the 10th April so I`ll do 'the switch off' at midday.

I was going out anyway until very late so it shouldn't be too onerous for me.(Just the oven clock to fathom out!)

DP's tropical fish 🐙🐟🐠 should be OK, shouldn't they?
And that machine that Grandad is connected to? 🤔

doodleygirl · 10/04/2022 18:58

Why on earth are so many people gullible to such shit?
