Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

Is anybody interested in a counter-protest?

To balance the load on the national grid, boil a kettle and make a drink between 10:00pm and 10:09pm.

If you can - start boiling according to the last digit of your door number (eg. house no.44 start at 10:04)

I’m sorry but I don’t think it’ll work.

Benjispruce4 · 10/04/2022 19:31

What about all the food that would be wasted? Hardly in the interest of the planet!

whynotwhatknot · 10/04/2022 19:32

No im ok thanks do you really thin this government will give a shiny shit

we only make worse for ourselves with the surge

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 10/04/2022 19:36

It would be more beneficial to you if you turned off the lights and unplugged what can be plugged out as much as you can everyday.

Shitme · 10/04/2022 19:36

I suppose it's a photo opportunity, standing by the masterswitch.

In ten minutes? What is it, puffa fish?
katnyps · 10/04/2022 19:38

Regarding cost, if this did happen, energy companies would MAKE money, 100%. Energy companies make a large proportion of their profit from "balancing" (which National Grid pay via auction, which will be charged back to customers one way or another). The grid is good at reacting to things happening (a large site suddenly tripping off, failure of one of the interconnectors etc.) and protection against all the things listed above (fires etc - btw, who wants fires suddenly breaking out around people who work there, the public etc...Hmm) is well established so they would just cut off parts of the grid to protect the whole. These areas may come back online quicky or they may take hours/days to fix (affecting everyone in those areas, some of whom would be vulnerable people). As noted, however, the grid is good at reacting AND they also have social media so will have contingency in place if they think it's actually a risk. How? Pay energy companies SHIT LOADS OF MONEY to trip off the system (and to come back in again with the surge hits).

How's food going to get wasted by have power of for 10 mins?
Cumbriangal · 10/04/2022 19:42

A post I read reckoned that turning everything back on at the same time would cause a power surge that would damage the National Grid then power companies would HAVE TO LISTEN TO US!!
I did raise concerns about Hospitals Care Homes etc being without power for days whilst repairs were carried out and the potential deaths of vulnerable people as a result and was promptly removed from the group.
In short a stupid idea that would achieve nothing.

Shitme · 10/04/2022 19:46

I'm going to fill up my hot water bottle around then anyway so I'll join in

Why are people so fucking condescending? Laughing at people who are shitting themselves at how they're going to afford to live over the next 12 months is pretty low. People are desperate - ok, not 'Mumsnet desperate', obviously on here the cleaner using your coffee pods, or the nanny charging fuel is worthy of hysteria, however, in the real world people are becoming increasingly desperate about how they're going to afford to feed their kids. These social media plans are to show solidarity, to show the strength of feeling amongst the public. For some they won't have to even make an effort to reduce energy consumption, they just won't have access to it in the first place.

Laughable that people are taking the piss out of the idea, yet think 10 minutes is going to ruin the food in their full freezers Hmm

Point out the flaws of the plan, fair enough - ridiculing people? Not so much.

Shitme · 10/04/2022 19:48

Kettle on at 10 then

Benjispruce4 · 10/04/2022 19:48

@Cookiecrumble22 sorry I misread . I thought it was off all night!

Jamboree01 · 10/04/2022 19:50
@HollowTalk I think the idea is to show there is power in the people, if we didn’t use it they lose a lot of money.
I’ll be doing it. I don’t think it’s unreasonable or stupid. It’s one way to make a point- even if it’s a small one.

I don’t think Ice cream reaches melting point within 10 minutes in an already freezing freezer.

Svara · 10/04/2022 19:50

And if you already do what you can, have relatively low usage and can't see how you can reasonably cut it further, what then?

*Laughable that people are taking the piss out of the idea, yet think 10 minutes is going to ruin the food in their full freezers hmm"

So, to be clear - we can't laugh at people who think this is a good plan, but we can laugh at people who don't think it's a good plan because food won't actually spoil in ten minutes.

But the fact that people are laughing at people is, in itself, laughable,?

What about people who don't think it's a good plan for some other reason? Can we get a list of what we're allowed to laugh at?

Benjispruce4 · 10/04/2022 19:55

It doesn’t say 10 minutes in the OP btw.

Well none of that makes sense - shush! Hmm

It only works if you put your knickers on your head, hold a wooden spoon and stand on one leg. Left is best. HTH.
