Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

10 minutes usage at 10pm in the UK is not equal to 10 minutes at 5pm or other peak times. Very few people will be using energy intensive stuff.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 10/04/2022 16:56

Transformers would explode with the sudden influx of electricity not being used, power cables would burst into flames, coal and nuclear power stations would have to be shut down, only to be turned back on later, (all with huge costs)

Oh well, now you’re talking. Let’s definitely make all of that happen, sounds very productive

mmmmmmghturep · 10/04/2022 16:57

Of course some people (the old, vulnerable, on medical appliances) shouldn’t take part if there is a risk to them, but they are also the most likely to suffer with the rising costs

They are also most likely to suffer if a power surge damages their equipment.

Crankley · 10/04/2022 17:01

If there's a surge, hugely unlikely, and it affects my laptop, I will track you down, OP Grin

User748956 · 10/04/2022 17:01

The costs are passed on to the consumer in the form of standing charges when things go wrong so making cables explode would just make the bills even higher

User748956 · 10/04/2022 17:02

Our consumer unit is surge protected anyway, probably most peoples are

DrWhoNowww · 10/04/2022 17:08

@BourbonVanilla

Why would that make prices go down?
It won’t, if anything they’ll increase because the costs of balancing the bloody system will go through the roof to accommodate for it.

If demand drops suddenly and randomly then generation gets switched off - and generators don’t do this for free, they get paid to reduce output to balance the grid.

National Grid spent £2.6 BILLION on balancing costs last year…who pays that do you reckon (hint, it’s not National Grid)

User748956 · 10/04/2022 17:10

Standing charge doubled because of extra costs and now a few idiots want to increase it even more

Starlightstarbright1 · 10/04/2022 17:11

My fb covid conspirator friend.. just posted it..yep thr kind of lunacy i expect from her.. i will be in bed so won't affecty life.

The power companies know we aren't happy so won't care because we turn the lecky off for 10 minutes

mmmmmmghturep · 10/04/2022 17:20

You would think groups like this would know the risks to ill people on medical equipment at home wouldnt you.

LondonQueen · 10/04/2022 17:28

Not sure how it would work, most stuff is off at that time in our house anyways.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 10/04/2022 17:45

@LouLou198

What about your fridge/freezer? I would end up having to throw out a lot of food.
For a 10 minute switch off? Behave Hmm

This sounds like the kind of shite that they came out in 1999 when the clocks were all gonna hit 2000 and the planes were gonna fall out of the sky was actually the biggest global nonevent ever.
iheartmybeachhut · 10/04/2022 17:48

Exploding transformers et al where do people find this shite and worse still believe it ??? Britain, you appear to building idiots.

FredtheCatsMum · 10/04/2022 17:48

If your fridge or freezer can't cope with power off for 10 minutes there's something very wrong. Most of my clocks have batteries. Might just give it a go

Nothappyatwork · 10/04/2022 17:49

@iheartmybeachhut

What a load of social media bollocks ! Wait a moment, most of social media is bollocks anyway, why do so many people take this stuff as gospel ? Confused
And yet the clapping for the NHS on a Thursday at 8 pm was organised via social media and we had Prince William and Kate and their kids out doing yet so hopefully Wills is on Facebook and gets the memo
User748956 · 10/04/2022 17:51

Boris told us to clap though and there was a reminder on the TV so it wasn't just SM. I ignored that as well

godmum56 · 10/04/2022 17:55

I am on various SM platforms and the only place I have seen anything about this is on MN....and yes I ignored the "clap for covid" too

www.ladbible.com/news/big-power-switch-off-planned-for-tonight-to-protest-rising-costs-20220410

Power companies make £9 million every 10 minutes, they make £144,000,000 a day, £52,560,000,000 a year. They've just doubled energy prices. I absolutely understand organising something like this, but it needs to be better organised.

Spain did it, and the government in reaction brought out financial help to help with the cost of living crisis. It was last month.

I think the British public need to stop bending over and taking it, and actually do something to protest the cost of living crisis, it shocks me just how much people have stopped caring about others, we've become a nation of "I'm alright Jack" almost American with individualism poor people need to just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps"

I don't know if enough people have seen this to do it, but we'll see if it has an effect.

Carebear81 · 10/04/2022 18:04

Spain did this a few years back … all it does is confuses the national grid …, (electric board) it would only reduce costs by days not week/months/years … plus the national grid in the uk is different to Spain so can’t see anything positive coming from it

It’s more about sending a message of legal quiet disruption that we can do from our own homes. I don’t particularly see this is a cost saving exercise
