To switch off the power at 10pm tomorrow night

Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

How would people keep freezers working?
Have you never had a power cut?

LikeAStar1994 · 09/04/2022 20:59

I thought that had something to do with "Earth Day" which I believe is in April...

Wehadabetamax · 09/04/2022 21:05

@User748956

At least it won't make a racket like the clapping did
It would if it caused people's burglar alarms to sound!
SpaceFarce · 09/04/2022 21:08

I always wonder who the people are who share this stuff and think it’s real. Critical thinking - zero.

Flatbrokefornow · 09/04/2022 21:09

@LittleBearPad

What an utterly bizarre idea.

Why will any power company care you don’t use 10 minutes worth of power.

I think it’s the surge as everyone turns it back on that causes the issues. It’s just a protest. Bozo is terrified of being unpopular, so might cave to pressure. Or take the let-them-eat-cake route. Depends who’s watching.

Also, it’s only ten minutes. It’s not going to be an issue for peoples appliances. Except the over clock. They are such a pain.

Narwhalelife · 09/04/2022 21:10

@dfendyr absolutely not just see this and wondered what people thought. It’s light hearted. I mean it’s not going to make crazy difference but no harm in doing so, it’s only 10 minutes.

@SpaceFarce I think these things spread like anything else.

Remember the clapping for the nhs 🙄 that was started on social media

@Flatbrokefornow yeah I think that’s the point. Just to ruffled a few feathers, I mean who actually knows what would happen if everyone in the whole UK did it? Obviously (from the tone here) we will never find out.

WhoWants2Know · 09/04/2022 21:13

This is the post that I saw. It's the surge as everyone switches back on that is supposed to cause the disruption.

I think it's similar to how advert breaks during very exciting TV programs have historically caused power surges.

I meant the stuff about Spain. Can you find a reputable source about how it worked in Spain, and when? Because I can’t.

Narwhalelife · 09/04/2022 21:16

As OP I feel like I need to say, I’m not an idiot that shares all kinds of crap on social media. I didn’t share this to my social media, just bought it here for a debate really.

Those of you saying ‘just social media rubbish’ fail to see the power of these kind of things. Even if this isn’t going to work, other suggestions might.

It’s just light hearted, I don’t for an instant think that this will end world poverty or cure climate change, but people do have the power to demand change.

moonbedazzled · 09/04/2022 21:17

Can I keep my electric blanket on?

AChocolateOrangeaday · 09/04/2022 21:18

What a load of bollocks.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/04/2022 21:19

What’s the point?
Why would it change anything?
Who wound it inconvenience other than you?

viques · 09/04/2022 21:19

It means going down into the cellar, which I try my very best not to do……….. so , no.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/04/2022 21:20

I don’t see how this would create a demand for change though - it’s an invisible event.

Do you have a link to show how it worked in Spain?

That was fucking weird too 🤷🏻‍♀️

SpaceFarce · 09/04/2022 21:22

@bluebaul quite. Utterly pointless (I’m NHS employed).

ihatethefuckingmuffin · 09/04/2022 21:22

Won't the energy companies just think a load of people have had an early night cos they have work the next day? and after 10 giving up so done as advised get up and go to another room? Or remembered they work in a schoo! So have no work the next day?

User748956 · 09/04/2022 21:25

Most of the people doing this will probably have to ask their parents permission to turn everything off

mogsrus · 09/04/2022 21:26

@LouLou198

What about your fridge/freezer? I would end up having to throw out a lot of food.
Don’t open door & freezer will be fine for a good few hours fridge will probably be the same. We had a power out for 11 hours, everything was absolutely fine
OvOvO · 09/04/2022 21:26

Nope cos my freezer food would melt and my koi carp would not be happy to have their filtration system stopped. But the main reason it's a nope is because
IT'S A LOAD OF BoLLOCKS!

typingcake · 09/04/2022 21:30

Lol, the oven clock battle was my first thought too!

JudgeJ · 09/04/2022 21:31

@DebussytoaDiscoBeat

The only person I'd be pissing off by turning off all my power would be me. I really don't want to be resetting the clock on my oven again after battling with it two weeks ago when the clocks changed.
I got ridiculously excited that I managed to put mine forward without having to find the manual but I did remember that when I was putting it back in October I spent ages slowly putting it back by going forward through 23 hours before realising that there is a back button as well as a forward button! I've started unplugging things rather than leaving them on standby because of the costs.
Gonnagetgoing · 09/04/2022 21:32

Not sure I’d do this lol 😂
