To switch off the power at 10pm tomorrow night

Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

@mmmmmmghturep

It will be poorer ppl who suffer if equipment gets damaged. Those who cant afford to replace it. Stupid idea
This is a concern. I keep seeing people who are very vulnerable in a financial and mental sense online talking zbout their gas and electricity costs. A lot seem to think this is a great idea that'll make a massive difference.

God knows what they'd do if they did it and their electrical appliances were impacted. I truly worry for the MH of some of the people who I've seen post recently about their gas and electricity. It's worrying but so many are really reacting in a way that's damaging to their own health already

mmmmmmghturep · 10/04/2022 00:31

@Girlmumdogmumboymum yes ive seen some of it on Twitter.

Painiscrap · 10/04/2022 00:37

I won’t be taking part. Like some other posters, it took me ages working out how to change my oven clock, and I can’t remember how I did it. I also hope to be in bed before 10pm, so will have washing machine set on delay, so clothes are washed for me getting up in the morning!

Chely · 10/04/2022 00:45

Why on earth would you need the oven to tell you the time? I swith that off at the mains after every use.

Chely · 10/04/2022 00:45

*switch even

saleorbouy · 10/04/2022 00:58

You obviously don't understand why the prices have gone up, it's not out of spite but because the price of gas, the primary energy source to generate electricity has significantly increased in price.
They also have a fleet of maintenance and repair vehicles requiring fuel and the cost of supply line cables that are similarly affected by the price rises and commodity increases.
You turning off your power will make no effect to them. Better you spend your time going round the house to reduce your consumption on items you're using unnecessarily.

Pyewhacket · 10/04/2022 01:01

Pointless.

mmmmmmghturep · 10/04/2022 01:03

Jesus its the poorest who will suffer if equipment gets damaged and yet this is being posted under the #SocialistSunday hashtag on Twitter. Idiots.

closetmeupandshootmetotheskies · 10/04/2022 01:35

You could really bugger up the NG with the resulting power surge with people turning stuff back on again.

The NG and electricity supply is way more complex than "me turn light off, save me leccy". There's a ton of resources allocated to provisioning and spikes and peaks, and dips in demand put the NG under huge strain. FS, we in the UK knacker out the grid with the spike in demand in commercial breaks in TV to point where this is a factor they take into account with provisioning.

Some people will believe any old claptrap they see on facebook, OP is proof of this.

Newhousesad · 10/04/2022 03:08

I probably won’t be doing it. The thought of having to reset every single device in my home gives me the shivers

rolllan · 10/04/2022 03:17

If the country can make everyone clap at a certain time together as a positive thing then if cutting off electric would do anything then maybe, but not seen a good point yet.

User748956 · 10/04/2022 06:05

If stuff gets damaged at the grid end, the thing that happens is the electric standing charge goes up to pay for it, bills don't go down.

mogsrus · 10/04/2022 06:54

@dfendyr

I'm not turning off my power for 10 minutes because it's a terrible idea

Sure my freezer should be ok,but what happens if say I turn it off , and it triggers something and won't turn on again??

If you had a power cut it would be the same scenario
mogsrus · 10/04/2022 06:55

But if this is for real, you would have to do it after a power cut anyway
TulipsGarden · 10/04/2022 06:59

This is mad, why on earth would it make any difference? People post such bollocks.

Traumdeuter · 10/04/2022 07:07

I leave any clocks that need manually changing to be half an hour between GMT and BST. That way they're half an hour early half the year and half an hour late the rest of the time. That's how much I love changing clocks. Grin

Dips in demand do not put the NG under strain ffs, Hmm it's designed to accommodate this. If anything puts it under strain, it's too much demand..
scrambledeggsandbeans · 10/04/2022 07:22

I live in Spain this did not happen, never heard of it!

mogsrus · 10/04/2022 07:27

Our alarms are hard wired but most of them have battery back up

Totally agree.

However, going off topic, if we (or Europe in general) wanted to defeat Putin and really help the Ukraine, we'd all drastically reduce our electricity, gas, oil consumption.

Sadly it's Europe's reliance on fuel that's keeping Putin's war machine going as he's still raking in billions, which far outweigh the sanctions etc.

I would most definitely reduce my consumption for a more noble cause (although completely sympathise with people who are suffering from fuel poverty).

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 10/04/2022 08:07

....and what happens if the grid infrastructure gets damaged by people doing this?
The many £00000 it will cost to fix, that costs likely to be handed over to the customers, maybe not this year, but next I assume?

Svara · 10/04/2022 08:38

What CAN we do?

00100001 · 10/04/2022 10:02

@Svara

What CAN we do?
Nothing...

Reduce your energy consumption basically

GladAllOver · 10/04/2022 10:15

It's just social media bollocks. And even if everyone did turn off their power at once it would cause seriously technical problems for the electricity network and generators.

ClareBlue · 10/04/2022 10:31

And some other regimes that ignore human rights and women's rights in particular.
Best thing is for everyone to review their energy consumption and go out of their way to actively reduce it where they can. The figures for leaving everything on standby, plugged in and over boiling water, leaving ovens on, etc are a real eye opener. That's before you even look at more drastic action.
