To switch off the power at 10pm tomorrow night

Just seen this on Instagram.

I’m at the stage anything has to be worth it. Il probably do it, it’s just as I go to bed anyway so why not.

I’m not suggesting it will solve the issue, but might piss a few people off?

Anyone else?

@OvOvO

Nope cos my freezer food would melt and my koi carp would not be happy to have their filtration system stopped. But the main reason it's a nope is because IT'S A LOAD OF BoLLOCKS!
A full freezer will be OK for about 24 hours, when there were regular power cuts in the early 70s we were advised to keep the freezer full, if it was only loaves of bread to fill space.
lurkingfromhome · 09/04/2022 21:37

Oh OP, come on. How about employing just a bit of critical thinking here instead of blindly pasting some fake news shite and hoping to “piss a few people off” 🙄.

OutingHobby · 09/04/2022 21:39

@Horridcreature thank you! Will do x

It reads like those chain letters:

"A did it and got a rise at work. B didn't do it and fell down a sink hole which inexplicably appeared in his lounge the next day".

The surge from the few people doing this causing issues is about as logical as the point in Allo Allo where all the inhabitants of Nouvion are meant to flush their toilets at the same time to flush the British Airmen along the sewage system to be picked up by submarines.

Do you honestly think that switching everything off for 10 minutes would have the electric companies thinking "oh heck, a few people everyone turned things off for 10 minutes therefore we must lower the prices"? Does that really sound like a thought process management would have?

On the very unlikely chance that it would even be noticed it would be gone before anyone was worried.

Maybe organise something that's really going to get noticed like, was it the philosophers going on strike in Hitchhikers' Guide?

I leave any clocks that need manually changing to be half an hour between GMT and BST. That way they're half an hour early half the year and half an hour late the rest of the time. That's how much I love changing clocks.

mogsrus · 09/04/2022 21:45

How long is it supposed to be turned off

Svara · 09/04/2022 21:48

People sit in the dark for earth hour, this is only 10 minutes with a few other things switched off too. I'll be doing it, it's easy and there's nothing to lose so I don't care if it turns out to be pointless.

Guessing we all put the kettle on at 10:10?

Steelesauce · 09/04/2022 21:48

I'll be in bed by 10pm on a Sunday Grin they really want me to get up, shut the power off for 10mins then switch it back on and go back bed?? The only person I'm pissing off, is myself in that situation!

mogsrus · 09/04/2022 21:48

Stil” think the best idea is all go to energy companies & say can’t pay this.... if 3million did it what would happen...be interesting wouldn’t it

Earth hour makes sense.

Smokeahontas · 09/04/2022 21:56

I mean where to begin? It’s clearly fake with April randomly pasted in. Power consumption drops massively overnight, probably starting at 10pm anyway when people start going to bed. Why on earth would ten mins lead to a reduction in prices?!

YourWinter · 09/04/2022 22:00

I can’t see it making a difference. I switch most things off at the wall anyway, not much is left on all the time - fridge and freezer, vivarium, broadband router (so I can use Alexa if I wake in the night), and the boiler programmer.

There’s a little battery clock in the kitchen so I don’t need the oven clock. When it’s switched back on at the wall it flashes 12.00, I just press the middle button to stop it flashing and I don’t have to set the time to use the ovens.

dfendyr · 09/04/2022 22:01

@Svara

How would people keep freezers working? Have you never had a power cut?
Obviously!
whyohwhy101 · 09/04/2022 22:03

I keep seeing this on social media. Mainly on Twitter. Switching off all power at 10pm on the 10th for 10 minutes.

mumwon · 09/04/2022 22:04

Earth Hour is in March& is world wide idea & as far as my internet searches I cannot see anything else regarding spain

Svara · 09/04/2022 22:06

@dfendyr
Not sure if you mean obviously you have or obviously you never have, but a freezer is obviously going to be fine for 10 minutes!

Narwhalelife · 09/04/2022 22:07

@whyohwhy101 this is it

dfendyr · 09/04/2022 22:08

I'm not turning off my power for 10 minutes because it's a terrible idea

Sure my freezer should be ok,but what happens if say I turn it off , and it triggers something and won't turn on again??

whyohwhy101 · 09/04/2022 22:10

This is what I have seen online.

Does the person that wrote that realise that there are only 68 million people in the UK and only just over 27 million households?
So if they're hoping for 20/25 million people to do it, that's most households in the UK.

whyohwhy101 · 09/04/2022 22:17

And this is what I've seen about Spain.

Yep. I've seen it and I'll be doing it.

comealongponds · 09/04/2022 22:20

It’s utterly pointless social media bullshit

VanGoghsDog · 09/04/2022 22:56

The most shocking thing about this thread is that people set their oven clocks - I've never bothered, it's too annoying to have to keep re doing it twice a year plus any power outages. It doesn't matter if it's wrong, I have enough other clocks in the house!

Thinking about it, why does the oven even have a clock? The fridge/washing machine/dishwasher etc don't??

I use the timer on my oven clock when I am cooking something. It refuses to play ball unless it has a time on it, so I just leave it on all the time.
Namelessnancy · 09/04/2022 23:00

If enough people do it it could be a visible protest the cost of living rises. Those worrying about the frozen food defrosting how the fuck do you get it home from the supermarket? Teleport? The lack of critical thinking is terrifying.
