he is a tory,
he is not even labour

whether he and his wife are rich should not matter

Isn't it the fact he's trying to look as if he cares about the average person when he hasn't got a clue? If the Queen tried to pretend she understands Elsie's struggle to heat her flat then she'd get stick too.

WhiteCatmas · 03/04/2022 17:10

He has no understanding or empathy for people in the cost of living crisis.

ididntevennotice · 03/04/2022 17:13

Of course it matters. He is so out of touch with reality he can't do an effective job for the people.

VladmirsPoutine · 03/04/2022 17:16

The background of politicians should matter. The Queen was criticised IIRC for giving her christmas message infront of a gold piano which alone probably costs more than everything a lot of people own.

Sunak's PR stunt paying for petrol for a car that he probably saw for the first time that morning and failing to understand how to use a bank card to pay should cause alarm bells.

You have a class of people who have absolutely no knowledge of how most people live making policy on how those people should live.

The tories must thank their lucky stars that a lot of the British public are so worn down that they expect tories to do the bare minimum but because they seem like 'rulers' they stay in power. To accept that he's a tory therefore he of course should be ridiculously rich is to also accept that some people should be allowed to withhold resources in other words that others in society should be poor.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 03/04/2022 17:20

YANBU the criticism was about the hypocrisy of the government's stance on Russia imposing sanctions while his wife still had significant business links there. They have obviously taken onboard the criticism because apparently her companies dealing with Russia is now ending. Also some serious questions need to be asked about the billions funnelled to private companies during Covid and things like bounce back loans that were widely abused due to lack of scrutiny and they have written off. We are now told there is no money when we need help most. So yes he deserves all the scrutiny because he has mismanaged public funds and now we are all suffering.

eddiemairswife · 03/04/2022 17:21

Perhaps she could give some of her money to the Queen to even things up a bit.

Wazooks · 03/04/2022 17:21

What I find interesting is that there are people who are so impressed by wealth that it would actually be a reason to vote Tory, or even make him a popular candidate for prime minister.

This is what kept getting Berlusconi elected (Berlusconi was the richest man in Italy). It is what got Trump elected.

His (wife’s) wealth does matter. And it won’t impact him negatively.

TinLeaf · 03/04/2022 17:23

Nobody is having a pop at him because he is rich. The problem is he is pretending he understands how it feels to be really poor.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 17:25

out of touch with reality?
do you know how much these politicians earn?
even Kier Starmer earns a good sum

What does “he’s not even Labour” actually mean?

Theunamedcat · 03/04/2022 17:28

He is completely out of touch more than most he should just own that fact

Shinyandnew1 · 03/04/2022 17:30

he is not even labour

What do you mean by that-can you explain?!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 03/04/2022 17:30

Starmer didn't go to public school. He does know what life is like for ordinary people.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 17:31

old labour i guess rather than new labour

tory is all about capitalism

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 17:31

Listening to him talk about the multiple different types of bread they buy to suit the whole family's tastes when some people would be grateful to get a value white sliced loaf just shows how out of touch he is!

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 03/04/2022 17:34

Even the Queen understood about self-scan tills and the opportunities for shoplifting.

This guy.

Words fail me.

And not in a good way.

Suedomin · 03/04/2022 17:36

When he is the Chancellor of the Exchequer trying to pretend he understands how difficult life is for some people it matters.
It also matters where the money comes from and what the investments are.

Mydogmylife · 03/04/2022 17:37

Yes I do know how much these politicians earn. It is a fair amount, but compared to Sunaks wealth it's like a kids Saturday pocket money
MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 17:38

but why should his wife's riches make any difference?

i get there should be scrutiny if Russia are involved and the money is ill gotten gains -
he is the exchequer,
not his wife

Why would a man from one of the richest families in the world want to do a job (MP, Cabinet Member etc) that pays a salary that is chicken feed to him?

@deedeemegadoodoo

do you want him to sit back

assuming most politicians dont actually do the job for the money

FrecklesMalone · 03/04/2022 17:41

MPs earn £87,000 a year.
Sunaks wife is worth 350,000,000. If she stuck it an low interest bank account if 1% she would hear 3.5 million pounds a year. It's not even remotely comparable.

GiantCheeseMonster · 03/04/2022 17:42

It matters because money has a different meaning to rich people. When the Tories cut benefits by £20 a week, I don’t think they do it out of malice. They do it because they genuinely don’t see the value of £20 to a poor person. That is such a small sum of money to them that they don’t get it. So when they see people saying it’s a choice between heat or eat, I think deep down, they just don’t get it. They can’t see how it could be that bad. Could Rishi survive a week on the minimum wage? Would he know where to start with a weekly food shop for a family of four that has to cost £50 max? Personally I think every Chancellor should have to try living on the minimum wage for a month, to try and get a bit of insight into what it is like.
