he is a tory,
he is not even labour

whether he and his wife are rich should not matter

Rishi Sunak went to a £50k a year school. He’s not ordinary, he’s not Middle class, he never was, and he never will be. He’s from wealth and privilege , he’s gone on to make more money as many wealthy and privileged people do,
And through the networks that his wealth and privilege have afforded him he’s married the daughter of a billionaire.

Soffit · 03/04/2022 20:32

All of the main public and private schools are crammed full of the children of Asian GPs and pharmacists. They are financially comfortable but I would not single them out as wealthy let alone mega wealthy. It is well known that he married a very wealthy woman which put him into that league. His upbringing was typical Tory rather than anything out of the norm.

Mxflamingnoravera · 03/04/2022 20:37

The big difference is between "earns" and has "wealth" all of us to have to work to earn money are in a different league to those who have wealth and earn on that without "needing" to work. Sunack is in the latter class.
If you think he lives on his salary as a politician you need to understand the difference between wealth (ie most Tory politicians) vs earrings (most other politicians)
This might help:

In order to have 3 kids at a school that costs £43k a year, you need to have £130k net income per year SPARE (i.e. after tax and your other living expenses). That's quite a lot more than "comfortable"
Soffit · 03/04/2022 20:41

I think that two had full scholarships.

Coffeeonmytoffee · 03/04/2022 20:47

I’m just fed up with the super rich and privileged being in power.
How can they relate to normal people. They have no idea what it’s like to have no connections or money to fall back on.

They’re just appointed yet another Etonian to run Channel 4. He’s a mate of the Goldsmiths.
The way they handed contracts worth hundreds of millions to their mates.

Michelle Mone is said to have spend £46 million on PPA and sold it for double to the NHS.

Sunak is worth an insane amount of money. He has no idea how real people live. He shouldn’t be in politics. He represents no one.

NETSRIK · 03/04/2022 20:47

What matters is someone with his wealth has absolutely no idea about heating or eating yet that person is in charge of the budget.

Clavinova · 03/04/2022 20:52

The fees are currently £43,335 per annum (£14,445 per term)

What were the fees 25 years ago? Private school fees have risen much more than inflation.

Tony Blair was a border at Fettes College - fees there are £37,000 pa.

SwedishEdith · 03/04/2022 20:57

'He took the scholarship exams for Winchester College, did not win a full scholarship, but his parents decided they would send him there anyway.

In a recent conversation with Nick Robinson, he said his family believe “education is everything”. In an even more recent podcast recorded by two pupils at a school in Richmond, in his North Yorkshire constituency, he said when they began by asking him where he had been to school, and what type of school it was:

“So I was very fortunate to go to this amazing school called Winchester College, and it’s in Hampshire, and it’s a very old boarding school but an absolutely marvellous place.”

www.conservativehome.com/highlights/2020/01/profile-rishi-sunak-rising-star-of-the-johnson-project.html

I mean, don't loads of kids' parents think "education is everything"? But his school was "amazing" and "marvellous". For all of his expensive education, he sounds so inane.

Clavinova · 03/04/2022 20:59

Fees at Keir Starmer's old school are £20,000 per annum.

Octomore · 03/04/2022 21:01

Except he went there when it was a state school.

Octomore · 03/04/2022 21:02

So what exactly is the point you're trying to make?

Clavinova · 03/04/2022 21:03

Except he went there when it was a state school

Converted to a private school when he was about 14.

Octomore · 03/04/2022 21:05

But he never paid fees. He does not come from the kind of background where his parents could send him to private school.

So I'll ask again - what exactly is the point you're trying to make?

Clavinova · 03/04/2022 21:08

Some/many of his contemporaries in Sixth Form would have been fee payers. Presumably he mixed with private school pupils at the
Guildhall School of Music as well?

I'm a fiscal conservative so would agree with Sunak on trying to reign in the public finances. As well as his wife's wealth, I also don't care whose car he put fuel into.

at least Sunak is too rich to be tempted to steal anything from the public purse.

No idea why people are talking about backgrounds of other politicians. there's plenty to talk about wrt Sunak's background.

People vote Tories into power, there are much worse tories than sunak, I'm ok with him.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 21:13

I am not a raving Tory, nor a sunak fan, but the question was regarding his wife's money and why he should be flamed

He doesn't need to steal - he can just ensure policies benefit his wife's investments.

agree with Sunak on trying to reign[sic] in the public finances
Except he isn't.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 21:15

I don't believe starmer is your working class hero, I wouldn't call a nurse working class

OP posts:

@MrsLargeEmbodied

I am not a raving Tory, nor a sunak fan, but the question was regarding his wife's money and why he should be flamed
Because it's a serious conflict of interest when his policy changes can make her (more) millions.
Changechangychange · 03/04/2022 21:16

As PP have said the interesting question is why does he do his job for (to him) peanuts? So he can make himself, his family and his friends richer IMO. Same for JRM

This. It isn’t peanuts if he is awarding millions of pounds of government contracts to his wife’s company with no oversight. Or can help his wife’s company avoid millions of pounds in tax. This “peanuts” job actually becomes a nice little earner once you have the power to make laws that suit your own business interests. Fuck the poor people who can’t afford to hear their homes, they would probably have voted Labour anyway.

Octomore · 03/04/2022 21:16

I wouldn't call a nurse working class

Seriously? How do you define working class then?

Changechangychange · 03/04/2022 21:19

Oh no! Mixing with people who paid fees? Let’s throw him out of the Labour party. Outrageous behaviour.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/04/2022 21:20

Nurses are not working class, they are well qualified, working class to me would be a Manual labourer

OP posts:
Octomore · 03/04/2022 21:22

You think working class = unskilled? That's bullshit, and pretty ignorant. There are plenty of skilled workers who are working class.
